SOFIC 2014 – Warwick Mills

Thursday, May 22nd, 2014

I had heard heard of Turtleskin slash protective armor in the past but didn’t know that it was a product of New Hampshire-based Warwick Mills. Turns out, they make all kinds of cool textiles like the dyed 100% Twaron fabric used in this ballistic combat shirt. That’s right, this combat shirt offers ballistic protection to the tune of 2gr @ 700 fps and 17 gr @ 1700 fps. The fabric also offers FR as well as cut protection.

They are also integrating this fabric into civilian clothing styles such as sport coats.

SOFIC 2014 – BAE Systems SPS Preview

Thursday, May 22nd, 2014

BAE Systems shared two technologies that they’ve put forward for the US Army’s Soldier Protection System program.

20140522-094723.jpg

The first technology is ISSS or the Integrated Soldier Sensor System. Based on their HEADs technology (Headborne Energy Analysis and Diagnostic System) which helps measure the forces that can lead to traumatic head injuries, ISSS incorporates external pressure sensors based on the DARPA blast gauge, physiological stats monitor for heart and breathing rate as well as skin temp and inactivity. All of this feeds into a Soldier Display. There is also a data retrieval system similar to HEADS that allows the data to be interrogated post mission. It can then be interpolated to help better diagnose Soldier injuries.

The second technology is the SPS Vital Torso Protection or VTP. Consisting of four different plates, X-SAPI and E-SAPI toros as well as side plates. BAE Systems have delivered over 1.25 million armor plates to DoD beginning with the original Small Arms Protective Insert program back in the late 90s.

A couple of weeks ago, S&S Precision showed me a new life vest that was built specifically to integrate into their PlateFrame carrier.

It is easily added or removed from the PlateFrame and is designed to keep the wearer’s head up in the event of inflation via either cartridge or oral inflation valve.

SOFIC 2014 – Tactical Revolution

Wednesday, May 21st, 2014

Tactical Revolution has introduced a weapon mountable ballistic shield for use with weapons in fixed positions that do not have a more elaborate gun shield.

20140521-104421.jpg

The AJAX Armor System is intended to protect the gunner from enemy fire into his shoulder area which is more lightly armored than the chest. Consisting on a Picatinny rail mount and armored 46100 steel plates, AJAX weighs 1.46 lbs per mount and 3.6 lbs per plate. Naturally, this means it’s meant for use in fixed positions but it can quickly be mounted and dismounted from the weapon.

Safariland – Advanced Webless System

Monday, May 5th, 2014

During Warrior West, we got to take a closer look at Safarialnd’s Advanced Webless System. Brought to market under the Protech Tactical Armor line, it utilizes the HANK poly-fabric, an abrasion resistant FR fabric that incorporates laser cut holes that accept PALS compatible pouches.

20140505-105841.jpg

This article is by no means definitive of what Safariland has created but we wanted to give you couple of candid shots of the technology that they have incorporated into their Soldier Protection System entry. Currently in source selection, SPS is a Multi-year technology demonstration tool used by PEO Soldier to identify promising Soldier Systems technology for outright fielding or integration a enhancements to currently fielded systems.

Safariland has also introduced the Advanced Webless System into a line of commercially available vests. As you can see, they’ve put a lot of thought into these designs which are completely scalable from simple plate carrier to integrated cummerbund to dictionary add-ons to enhance survivability.

Look for additional, behind-the-scenes coverage soon.

Warrior West – LBT Inc Unveils Mission Adaptive Panel System

Thursday, April 24th, 2014

20140424-073325.jpg

LBT has been working on this new modular armor carrier and bag system for several months and every once in awhile something will pop up about it but this is the first time that the Mission Adaptive Panel System has been shown publicly.

20140424-074310.jpg

Right now, it consists of a weapon bag, plate carrier and several Mission Adaptive Panels. These graphics from LBT gives you a good idea of what we’re talking here.

One thing that I thought was cool is that one of the panels incorporates the S&S Precision Skeletonized Magazine Retention And Baseplate.

This is another one of the panels which incorporates rifle and pistol magazine pouches. The pistol magazine pouches feature Kydex inserts.

The MAPs can be attached via a hook and loop and SR buckle combination to the carrier or the weapon pack. Additionally, the interior of the weapon pack (seen above) is lined with pile tape to accept a wide variety of accessories.

So far, the reception has been great here at Warrior West. In production now from LBT Inc.
