BCM Introduces the KeyMod 13″ Modular Handguard

Tuesday, January 7th, 2014

After more than 12 months of development and field testing, BCM is giving us an official glimpse the BCM KMR-13 KeyMod™ 13″ Modular Handguard.

KMR-13 from BCM

An ultra-light modular handguard for the AR platform, the KMR series of handguards is built around the KeyMod attachment system designed and made public domain by Eric Kincel, Director of Research and Development at BCM, in 2012. Manufactured from an exclusive blended aluminum and magnesium alloy, the BCM KMR weighs 30-40% less than pure aluminum with the same strength properties. The BCM KMR also features a proprietary patent pending mounting, indexing and lock up system that mitigates 12:00 rail movement due to heat generated from the barrel nut.

The KMR-13 has seen extensive field trials with the instructors attached to the BCM Gunfighter Program including Pat Rogers, Larry Vickers, Travis Haley and Mike Pannone, running the platform regularly for over 8 months now.

LAV
Larry Vickers said of the KMR-13, “With their KMR handguard, BCM has raised the bar above any other handguard being issued today and has set a new gold standard for lightweight modular rails!

Pat Rogers
Pat Rogers also spoke on the platform, “The KeyMod rail is light – extremely light – and the Key Mod slots add another dimension to mounting solutions, while keeping the weight of mounts for mission essential equipment down.

Travis Haley
Travis Haley was quoted as saying, “BCM has changed the conversation and built their Keymod Handguard from an Aluminum Magnesium Alloy, creating a a handguard that is the lightest free float on the market without sacrificing the rigidity or durability of the platform.

The BCM KMR will be on display at SHOT Show in the TNVC (6502), TangoDown (32303) and Battle Comp Enterprises (20068) booths.

Coming Soon to Bravo Company USA and BCM distributors, you can read more about the KMR-13 at www.BravoCompanyMFG.com/kmr.

H&K Goes KeyMod?

Saturday, January 4th, 2014

In this photo of an HK417 from Operators Suppressor Systems you can see 4″ of suppressor sticking out the business end if the rifle’s 16″ barrel. Interestingly, the H&K hand guard features a KeyModesque system. It’s backward from what we normally see in the KeyMod standard. While this isn’t PCAP! you have to remember that H&K came up with a negative space attachment system during the XM8 trials. You can also see H&K’s unimount.

Yesterday I posted a rant on my personal Facebook page about testing. I see that Hodge Defense Systems was paying attention and wanted to let me know that they have lab coats.

Ready For A Commercial FN Carbine?

    Tuesday, December 3rd, 2013

I first heard of FN working on a commercial carbine earlier this year and now word on the street is that this will become a reality at SHOT Show. I’ve heard that FN has placed orders for parts for these guns. And if that wasn’t enough, LAV has released this photo of a semi auto carbine prototype he purchased awhile back from a former FN employee.

I can’t wait to see if there is any teeth to these rumors.

    Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

    Saturday, November 30th, 2013

I’ve had some people ask me about dust covers or lack of them on assault rifles – with the AR15/M16/M4 family being the most notable example of a rifle that has a dust cover as standard issue. Recently there have been lower cost M4-style rifles hitting the market that have deleted the dust cover altogether. In my opinion this is done entirely as a cost cutting measure and not to enhance performance in any way.

My opinion is that on an AR, the dust cover is a plus with no real negatives – rarely does the dust cover spring break and cause malfunctions by bouncing back up to induce ejection stoppages during firing. It can certainly happen, but the likelihood of a stoppage due to debris entering the action from a lack of dust cover being in place is far higher.

The AR15 family of rifles was designed to have a Sturmgewehr inspired dust cover and all variants should in fact have one – if they don’t they fall into the category of guns for games and not guns for fighting.
