Milipol – Paraboot

Tuesday, November 17th, 2015

Talk about bringing back some memories.  I was walking through the halls at Milipol when I glanced at a booth full of boots.  One of the models reminded me of a pair of jump boots I owned when I was a lot younger.  You old heads will probably remember them.  Fully leather lined and padded with a thick sole.

This model is a little different than the original jump boot in that it has zippers and no ankle reinforcements.

When I flipped the boot over, it still had the same Parasaut sole but I am told this model is now for aircrew use.

Salomon – X ALP MTN GTX

Thursday, October 1st, 2015

Along the perimeter of the Edgar Brothers booth at DSEI were a series of glass cases.  Inside one of these were four examples of Salomon footwear.  Three of the boots were from their Forces line but the fourth boot was a commercial mountaineering model.

Turns out, it’s the X ALP MTN GTX and it’s currently undergoing wear trials with several European military and civil rescue organizations.

It’s a GORE-TEX lined, lightweight mountaineering boot, designed to be used with B1 crampons.  They’ve balanced the sole system to make it flexible enough for approaches yet stiff enough for use with crampons.

The Nubuck leather upper is paired with Cordura and a 3D edging chassis.  It’s got true to-toe lacing as well as a rubber toecap and heel counter.  Additionally, the forefoot is protected with EVA foam and the tongue is also padded.

They’ve chosen the Contragrip sole which is combined with an EVA shaped footbed as well as a carbon fiber “edging” stiffener.

Now, we just need to see a militarized version of this boot in the Forces line.

Bergans is introducing a new boot for cold wet conditions.

IMG_7267-0.jpg

Unfortunately, they are so new, we don’t have many details yet. Made from New Zealand leather with few seams and is completely waterproof. It is also the first boot made with Dermizax, an “active” membrane making it highly breathable. Dermazix isn’t a microporous membrane but rather wicks mositure away. The three layer sole system consisting of a proprietary grippy non-slip outsole, an aluminum plate in the midsole for stability and an inner sole subsystem with two options. The first is an anti-bacterial insole as well as an insulated insole. They can be used alone or together. The lower boot features a wide rubber rand to protect it from Norway’s rocky terrain.

In addition to this high leg variant, there is a lower trekking version as well as similar Hunting models.

US Army Operational Footwear Update

Monday, September 14th, 2015

Due to the nature of their line of work, Soldiers care about boots and the US Army has come a long way over the past two decades to offer a wider variety of mission-oriented footwear. We thought it would be interesting to share a few slides from a deck shared recently with industry by PEO Soldier’s PM for Soldier Clothing and Individual Equipment. They offer an overview as well as information on the Jungle and Mountaineering Boot efforts as well as the Cold Weather Overboot which has unfortunately been in development hell, in one form or another, since at least the 90s. Please note that photos of footwear in the developmental slides do not necessarily depict the items which have been selected by the Army, but are rather, representational candidates.
