New Austrian Camo

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

The Austrian military has joined the digital camo craze. Two patterns, one for woodland environments and another for desert have been developed. The patterns are similar in appearance with the exception of colorways. Both incorporate wide stripes with digital patterns in the foreground. Uniforms in the new patterns will be issued to Austrian troops deploying abroad on peacekeeping operations. Additional reports indicate that they will also be issued to the Austrian Jagdkommando, an Austrian Special Forces unit.

In a recent visit to the Heeresbekleidunganstalt (sort of an Austrian equivalent of Natick), the Austrian President received a briefing on the two new patterns.

However, the average Austrian Soldat will continue to wear the Feldanzug 75 in braungrau (Brown Gray), simple fatigue uniform first introduced into service in 1975.

Purdue Develops Broadband Cloaking

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Researchers at Purdue University have developed a new type of invisibility cloak that is simpler than previous designs and works for all colors of the visible spectrum. Rather than using expensive “metamaterials” used in other cloak designs, the new design is a far simpler device based on a “tapered optical waveguide”. Waveguides are used in communications technologies including fiber optics.

The research team used their specially tapered waveguide to cloak an area 100 times larger than the wavelengths of light shined by a laser into the device, an unprecedented achievement. Previous experiments with metamaterials have been limited to cloaking regions only a few times larger than the wavelengths of visible light. This research may one day lead to the ability to cloak large objects.

Anisotropic Metamaterials Emulated
by Tapered Waveguides:
Application to Optical Cloaking

We demonstrate that metamaterial devices requiring anisotropic dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability may be emulated by specially designed tapered waveguides. This approach leads to low-loss, broadband performance. Based on this technique, we demonstrate broadband electromagnetic cloaking in the visible frequency range on a scale ~100 times larger than the wavelength.

Blue Force Gear Introduces DAP Discreet Case

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

Designed to fit SBRs (10.5″) carbines fully assembled or longer disassembled weapons, Blue Force Gear’s new Discreet Case has a removable padded divider to protect the broken down components as well as a small slot pocket for storing paperwork or small parts in addition to featuring a velcro patch for ID patches.

The whole point of the case is obviously discretion and their choice of colors reflects this. The usual, high demand color schemes of UCP, Black, Ranger Green, Coyote, Khaki, and Multicam are available as well as Burgundy, Royal Blue, and Emerald Green.

To complement the new case BFG is releasing an initial run of 15 different pouches and accessories for compartmentalizing inside the Discreet Case as well as the new DAP Pack (more on this soon). These pouches will also be a boon to those who use other products with velcro accessory panels.

The DAP Discreet Case made in the USA and available from Blue Force Gear or G & R Tactical.

EOTAC’s Field Vest

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Recognizing the versatility of the Field Jacket, EOTAC created a sleeveless version that retains the carrying capacity of the original yet is intended for warmer days or to complement other clothing for concealed carry.

There are four large cargo pockets on the front of the vest featuring side bellows and drain holes. The pockets have elastic webbing on the inside to secure smaller items like magazines or a flashlight as well as tuck away flaps with adjustable snaps. The top pockets also feature vertical zippered “Napoleon” security pockets. Internally, the Field Vest has four pockets with elastic loops for securing additional gear. Finally, a padded collar eases heavy loads and the front of the vest closes with a two-way YKK zipper.

Manufactured from 9 ounce all-cotton Iron Twill, the fabric is treated with DuPont Teflon® fabric protector. Shown in Lizard pattern, the Field vest will also be available in OD Green, Coyote Brown, and Black from www.eotac.com as well as retailers such as Gander Mountain and Grey Group Training.

EOTAC’s Lizard Pattern Field Jacket

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

We told you that EOTAC has a couple of tricks up their sleeve. One of them is a new colorway. Last fall we dropped the news that EOTAC was working on French Lizard pattern. Initially, they developed the material to give their Field Jacket, based on the French Algerian combat suit, a proper tribute by reproducing the camo pattern made famous by the French Foreign Legion. However, as you will see soon, it will also be applied to other newly developed products.

ICE Bivy

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Integrated Combat Equipment of Canada is releasing a limited run of Multicam Bivy Bags using Gore-tex 3 layer fabric left over from a design project for a large US supplier. Future Multicam Bivy production will utilize a 3 layer Stedair fabric from Duro. Additionally, they will have a coated nylon floor to help control costs.

ice_bivy

The ICE bivy is generously cut (90” Long x 34” Wide (Flat) at shoulders). Made entirely from 3 Layer Gore-Tex the bivy is fully seam sealed. The 36” side zipper also features a flap. There is also an 8” overlap at face opening which has a wire stiffened hood. Finally, tie-out loops at head, hood, and foot complete the design.

The bivy comes standard with a stuff sack and at $185.00 US, this is a phenomenal price for a 100% Gore bivy, especially in Multicam. If you feel the price is high consider what one of my readers said elsewhere, “That price is cheap compared to a few cold and wet nights out in the woods. Think about how much you spend on motels “. Also upon reflection the Editor said that he recalls purchasing a Woodland 100% Gore-tex bivy in 1987 for about the same price! We could call this a “Deal of the Week” but it’s really more like a “Steal of the Week”.

Available in Multicam, Army UCP, and Woodland MARPAT. We have verified that there are Multicam bivies currently in stock but there will be a two week wait for UCP and MARPAT. If you want to secure a 100% Gore-tex bag you need to jump on this offer quickly.

O.P.S.E.C. – a New Take on the Poncho

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Survival Solutions Innovative Gear has released its Oversized Poncho/Shelter/Emergency Camouflage (OPSEC) unit. Essentially a poncho, they have integrated several new features.

O.P.S.E.C. in Snow Camo

It is manufactured from 70D Coated Ripstop Nylon, weighing in at only 1.9 oz. per yard and is generously cut measuring 104″ long by 59″ wide. The O.P.S.E.C. is constructed so the back is adjustable. When wearing a rucksack/backpack, the back of the poncho can be unsnapped and extend an additional 14″. If you decide not to wear a back pack, you can shorten the back of the O.P.S.E.C. with the snaps provided to a length consistent with the front. Additionally, to aid in shelter construction it has seven 15mm ring snaps and eight size 0 grommets. It is available in Snow, Multicam, Woodland, and UCP.
