SmartWool PHD Elite Socks Hit the Market

Friday, July 6th, 2012

SmartWool has just released their new PhD Elite line of socks featuring their 4 Degree Elite Fit System and ReliaWool Technology.

I wore the last go around of SmartWool PhD socks for quite awhile. I loved the fit but the heels wore out. Every single pair. Oddly enough, the SmartWool hiking socks I was issued in the service lasted forever so I’m glad to hear that they’re integrating this new ReliaWool technology.

As these were just released to stores I haven’t had a chance to try them out yet, but I’m looking forward to it and I’ll let you know what I think. T-shirts, underwear (unless you go commando) and socks are the closest clothing to your body. Don’t skimp on them, regardless of brand. They are critical to comfort and performance.

The Redeeming Side of BetaBrand

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

So we’ve talked about the BetaBrand DiscoLab pants, but they also are responsible for creating the DARPA Hoody.

Inspired by technology developed for the Programmable Matter undertaking, a computer program helped BetaBrand figure out how to make the most of raw materials to produce the Hoody. Not only did it determine patterning shapes based on how it would drape on the human form but the program also laid out the pieces to maximize yield and minimize waste. Warning military guys…it’s made from Hemp and most sizes are sold out. Maybe they’d make a run in something tacticool.

The Lengths Beyond Tactical Will Go To

Wednesday, June 27th, 2012

I recently met with Beyond Clothing’s Scott Jones to discuss his latest products. He showed me these modified level 9 pants with strips of Velcro loop all over them. He explained that the pants were originally built to support a DHS data collection effort for Law Enforcement uniforms. They allowed officers from several agencies to wear the pants in a variety of situations and place pockets of various sizes and shapes in the optimal position for their duties.

Now, Beyond uses these pants as a tool to help small organizations to customize their feature sets. This really shortens the development cycle so that fewer prototypes have to be made as the configuration can be converted into a pattern. It’s just one of the customization tools Beyond Clothing brings to the customer.
