CLAW Gear – Merino Seamless Baselayer Series

Thursday, March 30th, 2023

During IWA 2023, Austria’s CLAW Gear unveiled their Merino Seamless Baselayer Series, a newly developed line of base layers made in the EU. They collaborated with European military alpine specialists to create this series, which is designed to serve as a foundation for layering clothing, particularly for military and law enforcement contexts. Their primary focus during development was achieving ideal moisture management, which we accomplished by incorporating ventilation zones into the design.

Air Force Releases 102nd Uniform Board Results for Airmen, Guardians

Monday, March 27th, 2023

ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) —

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr. approved several initiatives submitted to the November 2022 Air Force Uniform Board for implementation in Department of the Air Force Instruction 36-2903, Dress and Personal Appearance of United States Air Force and United States Space Force Personnel. Authorized changes are effective April 1.

As separate services, the Air Force and Space Force host independent uniform boards; however, the results of one service’s uniform board may be adopted by either service. As a result, some of the changes approved by the Air Force’s 102nd Uniform Board were adopted by the Space Force. These specific changes have been identified within DAFGM 36-2903.

Airmen and Guardians submitted change requests through the Guardians and Airmen Innovation Network online.

The summary of approved changes are:

Child Development Centers (CDCs):
This authorizes installation commanders to designate CDCs as a no-hat, no-salute zone. Additionally, in areas not designated, salutes are not required when either person is carrying children.

Authorizes the wear of cold weather headband:
This expands the current cold weather accessories to add a headband in addition to scarves, earmuffs, watch cap and gloves.

Authorizes wear of a total of four badges on the Operational Camouflage Pattern (OCP) uniform above the USAF tape.
This expands the current regulation, which allows a maximum of two badges to four.

Authorizes the wear of additional headgear for the Flight Duty Uniform (FDU):
This expands the current regulation to add an OCP patrol cap and tactical OCP cap in addition to the flight cap.

Authorizes a “small logo” on purses and handbags:
The logo must not exceed one inch in diameter. USSF only: When wearing civilian attire or in uniform, while carrying a backpack by hand, there are no color or logo restrictions.

Authorizes olive drab green authorized backpack color:
This expands the current regulation to allow olive drab green in addition to black, brown, gray and dark blue, as an authorized color for backpacks to wear with any uniform combination.

Authorizes any size logo on gym bags:
This removes the word ‘small’ from the DAFI, allowing any size logo on gym bags.

Authorizes the wear of parkas by characteristics:
This expands the current regulation to allow cold-weather parkas to be commercially purchased, with certain exceptions. Parkas must be OCP pattern or Coyote Brown and have name tapes, service tape, rank and patches worn in the same authorized configuration.

Authorizes Friday morale shirts with logo on the front and back:
This expands the current morale shirt regulation by allowing logos to be worn at a larger diameter on the back of the shirt in addition to having a logo on the left side of the chest not to exceed five inches in diameter. Regardless of the logo, the shirt must be Coyote Brown.

Authorizes the wear of “heritage-like” morale patches on the FDU:
This removes the verbiage from the DAFI limiting current or past official organizational emblem or any variation for the FDU, like the OCPs and two-piece Flight Duty Uniform.

Stuff I Like – The Flight Suit from Kühl

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2023

For the man who wears everything Kühl comes the Flight Suit. This jumpsuit has two interesting features: a hood and thumb loops which make it great for kühler weather. It’s also made from a pretty robust knit, similar to a heavy sweatshirt.

I’ve got one and it’s über komfi. Made from a knit fabric, it’s got some stretch and has plenty of room. If you go off of their size guide and sit in between sizes, I suggest you go down, unless for some reason you want to layer under it.

Even though there are only four zippered pockets including chest and thighs pockets, I find myself looking for items like my cell phone. There’s plenty of storage.

Offered in Dark Moss, Raven, and Pirate Blue in sizes Small-XLarge with 30 or 32 inseams.

Upfitter Suspenders

Friday, March 17th, 2023

I recently ran across Upfitter Suspenders and thought they were worth a share as so many folks like to wear suspenders with their uniforms.

The three point design clips into your belt loops. While are not adjustable at the front and you must measure yourself and order the proper size, the rear adjustment allows sizing up to two sizes down. If you order a Large, for instance, the strap is adjusted to size Large when they arrive, but it may be tightened down to Medium or Small as well. Available in a variety of colors.

Swiss Army Awards Contracts to Six Companies for New Cold Weather Clothing

Tuesday, March 14th, 2023

According to a release late last month, the Swiss Procurement Agency (Bundesamt für Rüstung armasuisse) has awarded contracts to six companies to provide new cold and wet weather combat clothing for around 44 million Suisse francs.

The new producers of kit for the Army combat clothing and equipment (Kampfbekleidung und Ausrüstung der Armee or MBAS) program include two Swiss, one Austrian, one German, one Polish and one Indian company. They are: Workfashion.com AG and Cross Fashion Ltd. from Switzerland, Goldeck Textil GmbH from Austria, Ziegler Textil AG from Germany, Unifeq Sp. Z.o.o. from Poland and Qualiance Pvt. Ltd. from India.

All six companies were also checked in advance for the social sustainability of production, such as working conditions and safety standards.

The program began in 2018 with plans to begin fielding later this year. The MBAS project includes the procurement of new combat clothing and carrying systems in a new camouflage pattern as well as a hydration system and ballistic body protection in two versions.

Contracts for headgear have already been awarded to French and a Polish company. The combat uniform portion of the program is still in source selection. A total of 348 million Suisse francs have been budgeted for MBAS.
