Blast From The Past – The Chinese Entrenching Tool

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

This may prove to be the most entertaining 8:46 of your life, or the most terrifying if you consider the Chinese horde all armed to the teeth with these shovels. It slices, it dices, it juliennes. Truth be told, a couple of the features such as the “scissor” and nail puller are pretty cool, but music and effects make this one worth the price of admission. Make sure you stay long enough to see the entrenching tool museum.

Ase Utra Introduces New BoreLock Fast Attach System Products

Saturday, March 24th, 2012

During the recent EnforceTac show in Germany, Ase Utra introduced new products in their BoreLock fast attach system line. The HiPer flash hiders are designed to provide flash suppression on various barrel lengths, for both 5.56 mm and 7.62 mm weapons.

Interestingly, the technology looks very similar to the BE Meyers flash hiders we recently wrote about. If so, I’d say that they are on to something.

Interested in Some Special Platatac Kit?

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Platatac just posted a picture of a new rig on their Facebook wall. It’s a niche piece of kit but they’re wondering if anyone else would be interested in it. Go check it out, let ’em know what you think. Many people are unaware that the Australian company frequently builds small batches of specialized kit that never goes out on their commercial site. If they make just a few dozen it might cost as much as $400. If they manufacture over a hundred the price could be cut in half. Go check it out.

Royal Navy Trials New Working Uniforms

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

Royal Navy personnel are conducting wear test of a new new PCS working uniform aboard the new HMS Daring during its first deployment. This new uniform consists of T-shirt, shirt, thermal fleece and windproof jacket as well as trousers with slanted pockets to accommodate access while seated. There are also boots that feature zips as well as laces for rapid donning. The shirt’s collar can also be turned up and fastened instantly with Velcro to help protect from flame threats. Additionally, it’s in a new dark blue color rather than the light blue found on the current No 4 Dress. What’s even more interesting about this new uniform is that it is the same cut as the PCS uniform used by the UK’s ground combatants.

Further testing will be conducted aboard the Type 23 frigate HMS Westminster and the Trafalgar Class submarine HMS Talent.

Nigerian Police Showing Off New Camo

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

Here, you can see the Nigerian Inspector General of Police (IG), Mohammed Abubakar sporing the new ‘urban’ pattern. While we have no idea at this point how they decided on this pattern, it’s refreshing to see leadership wearing it and soliciting feedback from the public.

While many are going to want to criticize the pattern but please remember the main purpose of a uniform and that is to identify the member of an organization. Interestingly, it doesn’t seem all that unique and resembles the so-called urban woodland pattern available in the surplus market throughout the 90s. The reason this is so important is that one of underlying factors in adopting new uniforms in the first place was that it provide, “security features to forestall impersonation.”
