Cassidian Wins Big with Euro Future Soldier Programs

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011

Over the past two days, Cassidian (EADS Defence & Security) has announced two separate awards to deliver Future Soldier technologies to European Armies.

First, they were awarded a 20 million Swiss franc contract by the Swiss defence procurement authority Armasuisse for advanced production engineering of the IMESS programme (Integrated and Modular Engagement System for the Swiss Soldier). Cassidian’s Warrior21â„¢ system has been undergoing testing with Swiss forces since 2007. Interestingly, the contract also calls for the installation of IMESS network into Swiss Duro and Piranha vehicles.

On the 2nd of March, Cassidian announced that they had been commissioned by Germany’s Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) to deliver a further 400 units of the Future Soldier System (Infanterist der Zukunft) in its basic version (IdZ BS) for use by troops heading to Afghanistan as part of ISAF. This new delivery will raise the Bundeswehr’s total number of IdZ BS equipment sets to 2,900.

According to Cassidian:

An IdZ BS system for equipping an infantry squad (ten soldiers) consists of an identical basic configuration for all soldiers (including modular bullet-proof vest in protection class I to IV, C4I equipment including NaviPad for situational awareness and transmitting messages, target data and images, night vision device, tactical radio) and various special items (such as laser range finder, camera, thermal image sighting device).

Infrared Badges from Toye, Kenning & Spencer

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

According to SSD reader Malcolm, one of the most astonishing things seen at the recent IDEX show was the Infrared Badges from Toye, Kenning & Spencer. They have a long tradition of providing the finest in heraldry devices but have recently applied some interesting patent pending technology to their badges. Unlike printed IR badges, the IR properties are in the yarn. This means that there no risk of the properties rub off but are are contained in the threads. Additionally, there is nothing that indicates to the naked eye that the badge is IR reflective. There is a lot of potential here.

New Camo Patterns from Slovenia

Monday, February 21st, 2011

Lots to talk about these days when the subject of camouflage comes up. For example, Slovenia-based School of Survival from Nature has developed the LandCamo SUB-3D combat camouflage pattern family. It seems that companies are no longer developing single patterns anymore but rather taking a lead from the US Army’s camouflage requirement and preparing full families. Below is a photo simulation example of the Desert Shadow variant. It is joined by Transitional, Woodland, Snow, and SWAT patterns. Fabric is currently in production featuring IRR and FR properties.

Field Gourmet – UK Fields New Rat Packs

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Granted, we are admittedly Anglophiles but we don’t publish every new Brit military development. However, we couldn’t pass this one up.

The MoD has just fielded new 12-hour ration packs to squaddies serving in Afghanistan. The 12-hour rations are designed to be eaten while on patrol and feature updated menus that include Hindu, Sikh, Halal and vegetarian selections. These have also been included in 10-man versions which can be prepared by someone with rudimentary cooking utensils. Essentially, a box of tinned (canned) foods that can be heated on a cooker (stove).

Quoted in an MoD press release, Private Ryan Salmon from D Company 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment (2 PARA) says: “The new 12 hour ration packs are a great change from the normal rations. It contains Beef Jerky and a sandwich, which are great for a quick meal. The chemical water heater and main meal are good when you are on short operations, you can get a quick warm scoff and not worry about messing around with a cooker.”

At the programmatic level, Captain Jeremy Rigby, Head of DE&S Defence Food Services which is based in Bath, says: “This new contract – which was delivered ahead of schedule and under budget – enables us to produce innovative new rations quickly, meaning we can swiftly adapt to the latest operational requirements. It demonstrates our ongoing commitment to respond to feedback from our troops in Afghanistan, making sure we give them food they enjoy whilst maintaining the high nutritional content – as well as making the packs as light and convenient as possible.”

Bon Appetit!
