Threads

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

“Threads” is a clothing and equipment newsletter published by the Australian Department of Defence for industry. It is a great resource for keeping up with the latest in Australian initiatives. One interesting article confirms that the Australians are going to domestically manufacture their recently adopted Operational Combat Uniforms consisting of consists of four different garments: Field Shirt, Field Pants, Combat Shirt and Combat Pants designed by Crye Precision. The article also verifies that these will be printed in a new Australian variant of the MultiCam pattern. Hopefully, these will be manufactured from the latest version of TenCate’s FR Defender-M fabric rather than going back to the non-FR twill that some in Australia’s opposition political party have called for after some durability issues were noted with an older version of Defender-M. This new fabric adopted last year by the USMC and recently by the US Army features twice the tear strength of the version used in the last round of OCUs.

MDM – Other Coverage

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

Modern Day Marine is one of our favorite shows of the year and by no means were we able to cover it all. Check out this coverage from our friends at KitUp!:

Benchmade’s Newest Battle Blade Is Ready for Abuse

TAG’s New M240 Machine Gun Bag

and while the coverage didn’t originate from MDM, the Medford Knife & Tool Hammerspike was also on display

Shatter Glass Easy with Hammerspike

Additionally, Gannett’s Defensenews.com offered The Show Scout

Finally, don’t forget Tactical Fanboy’s singular, titillating look at ballistic undergarments.

BCB Like You’ve Never Seen Them Before

Even between all of us, we didn’t get it all. It was a great show. Look for additional coverage of gear we saw at MDM 2012 here on SSD.

More on the Magpul Investment

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Last week, Rosser, Sherrill & Co (“BRS”), a New York-based private equity firm, announced that it has made a significant investment in Magpul Industries Corp. Fortunately, Magpul’s executive management team, consisting of founder/President Richard Fitzpatrick, VP of Product Development Michael Mayberry and COO Doug Smith, will continue to be significant shareholders following the transaction. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed but we do know that Triangle Capital Corp announced a $14.8 M investment last week as well. Additionally, we have heard that this investment equates to a majority share in Magpul.

Integris Partners acted as exclusive financial advisor to Magpul in this transaction. SunTrust Bank, Regions Bank and Triangle Capital provided financing for the transaction.

Triangle Capital Corporation Invests $14.8M in Magpul

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

According to a press release, Triangle Capital Corporation (TCAP) announced that it closed a $14.8 million investment in Magpul Industries Corporation consisting of subordinated debt and equity.

This is interesting considering Magpul has had a fair number of suitors over the years, although generally, they have been interested in outright purchasing them rather than investing capital. Rumors have swirled about Magpul’s desire to make another foray into firearms design and perhaps this capital is going to be used to help them do just that.

MSA Finds Buyer for Paraclete

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Pittsburgh Business Times reports that Mine Safety Appliances has identified a buyer for their Paraclete business unit.

There are a couple of rumors as to who has offered to purchase the company but none have been as of yet substantiated. It will be interesting to see who is buying them and what plans they have for the brand that was at the forefront of releasable armor systems.

BTW, nice pic TR.
