BAE Systems Ultra Lightweight Warrior

BAE Systems has developed a new equipment ensemble that sheds 35% of the weight burden carried by current Soldiers. ULW focuses on five key product areas including helmet, vest/soft body armor, armor plates, load carrying equipment, and an integrated power supply.

“What ULW provides to the armed forces is options,” said Sean Martin, Business Development Director for BAE Systems’ Personnel Protection Systems business. “ULW is a flexible, modular soldier equipment platform that can be modified a number of ways, and provides multiple mission-specific options. Its ergonomic design features new, lighter weight advanced materials, which provide greater comfort and needed mobility without sacrificing protection.”

In addition to lightweight versions of the Advanced Combat Helmet and body armor systems, ULW offers something that current equipment does not; the “Integrated Power System”, a wearable power supply that is conformal in shape to the armor plates. Additionally, the recharge system is compatible with both NATO standard 28 VDC slave cables as well as 110/120 VAC shore power.

Benchmade Announces New Program Manager for SOF

Benchmade Knife Company has just announced Eli “Gonzo” Gonzalez is the new Program Manager of Special Operations Forces (SOF) on their Federal Government team.

Mr. Gonzalez brings twenty years of U.S. Army Special Operations experience to Benchmade. For the past five years, he served as Business Development Manager for ATK Tactical Systems/Eagle Industries Inc. Prior to that, Mr. Gonzalez worked with SAAB Technologies, as the Program Manager for Special Operations in charge of Special Operations Signature Management initiatives.

“I am honored to be part of the Benchmade team. I look forward to strategically expanding Benchmade’s brand within the federal government markets,” says Mr. Gonzalez.

“Eli comes to Benchmade with many proven successes and a solid reputation in the industry,” says Mike Nack, Fed/Gov Sales Manager. “His knowledge and expertise will be strategic to Benchmade’s growth and development among our Federal Government team.”

Eli will reside in Fayetteville, NC outside of Fort Bragg, home of the 18th Airborne Corps and the U.S. Army Special Operations Command.

Pelicans for Patriots Program

Pelican is offering a free Protector Caseâ„¢ to the 900+ courageous men and women of the U.S. Military who have lost a limb while serving in either Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) or Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF).

The program launched on April 27th, 2010 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and now they’re looking to extend it through word-of-mouth and to other military medical facilities across the U.S. To expedite requests theyâ€™ve created an online form that can be found at www.pelican.com/PFP. Help spread the word.

Blackwater Pro Shops – Coming to a Town Near You

In an effort to distance themselves from the name which many felt was tainted, Blackwater executives came up with the inert name “Xe” to help revamp their tarnished image. Here we are a little over a year later and although Xe didn’t seem to do much for anyone, it seems that the name Blackwater still has some life in it. Despite negative connotations almost everywhere else, the firm still enjoys a great deal of support from the gun owning public. So it only seems natural that the Blackwater name and iconic bear paw logo would begin to see a resurgence. Poised to open are combination pro shops and indoor ranges in Fayetteville, North Carolina and Salem, Connecticut. What is the significance of these two disparate locations you might ask? Fayetteville should come as no surprise as it is home to Fort Bragg. However, many would not know that Salem is right up the road from the Navy’s submarine force based in Groton, Connecticut.

The facade of the new store in Fayetteville is very reminiscent of the original Blackwater Lodge in Moyock. Not only is the name in huge letters across the front of the building, you will also be able to purchase clothing and equipment emblazoned with the logo. If that doesn’t get your blood pumping you can also try out your new firearms at their indoor range.

Will there be more pro shops? Well our guess is that it depends on how well these do. Most people don’t know this but the rise of Soldier Systems Daily is tied directly to the fall of the house of Xe so this move holds a special place in our hearts. We say good luck to Blackwater Pro Shops but isn’t it a little ironic?

Army Helmet Recall – the Plot Thickens

Last week we began to hear some rumblings from industry that the Advanced Combat Helmets sold to the Army by ArmorSource were actually produced by sub-contractor UNICOR (federal prison industries). UNICOR has first right of refusal for numerous commodities purchased by the government. For example, try to buy office furniture for a government building without going to UNICOR first. UNICOR is no stranger to manufacturing helmets, nor to making a mess of the deal. Some PASGT Helmets produced by UNICOR between 1980 and 2006 were found to have been incorrectly manufactured with not enough Kevlar. At that time, UNICOR was working as a sub-contractor to produce helmets for Sioux Manufacturing Corporation. So, unfortunately for ArmorSource (formerly known as Rabintex USA), the Army’s statement last week about removing the helmets from service makes it seem that they are under investigation by the Department of Justice. Perhaps they are, but the investigation is being handled by the US Attorney for Eastern Texas which also happens to be near the UNICOR facility in Beaumont, Texas that produced the helmets in question. This makes it seem to be a UNICOR-centric issue and begs the question whether UNICOR has any business manufacturing personal protective equipment for the military.

A Gun for Everyone

Some interesting factoids. Not sure of the veracity of some but it does show both sides of the issue. Of note is that despite the assertions of Hollywood and those interested in curtailing our gun rights, neither the Glock nor the AK are the most commonly used guns in crime.
