Al Mar Knives for 2012

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Al Mar Knives has been a mainstay brand since for over 30 years. They will be showing a few products at SHOT Show that should be of interest to SSD readers.

Eagle Heavy Duty
Improving upon the linerless Eagle Ultralight, the Eagle Heavy Duty incorporates heat treated skeletonized stainless liners and steps up to G-10 scales. All of the other features remain, including the light weight pioneered in the Ultralight series: the Eagle Heavy Duty weighs only 1 oz. more than the Eagle Ultralight @ 3 ounces.

SERE 2000 & Mini SERE 2000 with OD or Digital Camo Scales
If you’re as old as me, you’ll remember the AMK SERE knife. It’s still the same great knife made famous in the 1980s at the JFKSWCS SERE School, but now it’s available in OD green or Digital Camouflage scales.

Plus, their whole line, with knives for the job, the field, and the kitchen.

Visit AMK in SHOT Show booth #16524 or on the web at www.almarknives.com.

Medford Knives: Deployment Line (which was Tactical Christmas Day One!)

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

Medford Knife & Tool is launching two new lines of blades called the Commander Line and the Deployment Line. They are debuting at SHOT, where MKT will be taking orders. Now, what’s really cool about this is the very first knife off the Deployment production run is the knife that was won in the first “12 Days of Tactical Christmas contest we’ve been running (Day One was over on BOLO Report). They’re going to show off number one of the Deployment series (specifically the D-FMT, Deployment-Field Master Tanto) at SHOT and then ship it off to the winner.

If you didn’t like the 1ST Day of Tactical Christmas song about the Medford Knife, you may need to get a sense of humor issued to you.

“The Commander Line Field Master is one of the parent designs of the new Deployment Line,” Greg Medford told us when he offered it up as a prize. This 4-knife series is meant to be an awesome entry level knife for guys new to the American, hand-made knife scene and at .187”(3/16”) thick, is a slight departure from our Armageddon-Ready Commander Line.  The steel for that knife literally just went to the grinder last Thursday.”

Medford Knife & Tool is using D2, a really good, high grade steel that has an old-school proven record in the knife industry.  D2 is a quiet workhorse in America that has awesome properties for knives yet retails great value for what you get.  It’s high carbon, very corrosion resistant, abrasion resistant and holds what he describes as “a bitchin’ edge.”  Both the Commander Line (which we’ll tell you about soon enough) and the Deployment Line are made of D2, and Greg makes ‘em thick. Like .270” thousandths, compared to other industry knives that are much thinner on average.

“We’re less concerned with squeezing every penny out of grinding and steel costs; than we are about using whatever thickness steel will get us the strongest tool for the job. We let people buy a production ground knife blank from our factory and then customize Deployment Line blades however they want…and we try to get it done within 18 days. So they can say, “I want it with a left hand reverse grip sheath, black blade,  with black micarta handles or whatever and we’ll get it squared away.”

“We’ve been making some knives for the boys at Bridgeport, Stumps, VA Beach and points unknown that need ‘em now and in a certain way.  Looks like 2012 is gonna be a pretty crazy year for us.”

Manufactured by Hardcore Hardware for Platatac, the Platxe is quite a bit different than their previous tomahawk.

The new Plataxe is designed as a impact/MOE/CQB tool and features an articulated handle to place more force of the swing onto the blade. The head features a full blade and on the reverse a reverse penetrating spike. Manufactured from D2 tool steel coated with black Teflon and topped off with a G10 contoured handle.

The sheath might just be overkill. It offers full coverage. Made from Cordura with Kydex insert it can be attached to equipment via PALS.

Available exclusively from Platatac in Coyote and Black.

Don’t blink…

Short, sweet, and to the point, it’s nice to see that Leatherman acknowledges their military customer.

Bawidamann Blades Updates Site

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

20111214-220913.jpg

This is some great news for fans of Bawidamann Blades. They’ve completely revamped their website. In addition to their fantastic line of knives (yes I own a GUNNR SP, purchased at Blade Show earlier this year) they also offer the PALS Universal Platform as well as new t-shirts and morale patches. The PUP is great for attaching gear such as holsters and knife sheaths to MOLLE gear.

They are great folks who build great products. Support them as much as they support the troops.

TacHacker – Switch Modular Pocket Knife

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

We first mentioned the Switch from Quirky a year-and-a-half ago. At the time, it was only available for pre-order. Time went on and we had forgotten about it, until the Think Geek catalog arrived in the mail and there it was nestled between a multi-color LED flashlight of no particular note and a pocket chainsaw.

Featuring 17 different tool attachments, you can configure the tool for your specific needs and this is great news for the TacHacker who wants to customize his gear.

Standard Knife, Pliers, Scissors, Nail File, Tweezers, Thin Flathead Screwdriver, Phillips-Head Screwdriver, Eyeglass Phillips-Head Screwdriver, Eyeglass Flathead Screwdriver, Wood Saw, Serrated Blade, Corkscrew, Combination Bottle Opener/Flathead Screwdriver, Combination Can Opener/Wire Stripper, Pen, Magnifying Glass, LED Flashlight

You can purchase it directly from Quirky but it’s actually quite a bit less expensive from Think Geek.

Darrel Ralph’s Stellite Gunhammer Folder – Finished

Friday, November 18th, 2011

As we described yesterday, Darrel Ralph was wrapping up the prototype for a 4” Gunhammer and we showed some images of it “under construction”. Well, here is the finished product. Darrel says the frame took about 40 hours of back and forth machining time plus a little over 150 hours of development. “The blade grinding was very intense,” Darrel said. “We have six process that had to be followed just to grind the blade.”

As for the ‘unobtainium’ tungsten steel we mentioned before, Darrel said, “Chad had to build a vacuum chamber in a twenty-two hundred degree forging furnace to weld the materials in the blade and frame together so that the atmosphere is oxygen free. That’s why this steel is so hard to get hold of.”

As for the cost of this one-off Stellite 6K core, 4” Gunhammer with 3D carved lightning strike carbon fiber and copper inlay frame? It was more than your average E6 makes in a month, for obvious reasons. As much as we like it, we’ll be waiting for the more mundane version to come out. Check out the knives made for us normal mortals on his website. They’re quality work and worth the investment, whether you’re carrying one or admiring it in a case.
