Milipol 17 – SABER ReadiMask

Monday, November 27th, 2017

One of the most remarkable products I saw at last week’s Milipol security exhibition in Paris was SABER’s new ReadiMask. I was literally walking amongst the aisles and I saw SABER’s booth, a brand well known for their pepper spray and saw this mask on a manakin. I immediately stopped and snapped a photo.

Later, I was able to ask them about the full face mask and found out it is called the ReadiMask Adhesive Sealing Particle Respirator. There are two things that stuck out to me. First, the ReadiMask features integrated, fog resistant eye protection. Second, is the hypoallergenic surgical grade adhesive around the entire edge of the mask

While the ReadiMask is currently undergoing NIOSH certification. It’s closest equivalent is the N95 particulate filter mask. However, few if any, N95 masks seal directly to the face. In fact, the test procedure for particulate masks find them sandwiched between two frames and then placed over the blower which puts particulates under pressure. An N95 mask certification means that it is not oil resistant, but filters 95% of particles that are at least 0.3 microns in diameter. But if that mask doesn’t completely seal to the face when used for real, there will be cracks around the edges allowing some material to enter the mask. Additionally, N95 masks don’t incorporate eye protection.

Even without the certification complete, SABER claims ReadiMask, “Substantially reduces exposure to pepper spray, bacteria, spores similar to anthrax, bloodborne pathogens, viruses, smoke particulates, hazardous particulates, pollution, spit & bodily fluids, mold, asbestos, dust, debris etc.”

ReadiMask comes flat packed and can be included in any LEO or first responder’s PPE for in extremis use.

Purchase of ReadiMask is restricted to professional users.

Osprey Elite 220 – European Counter-Terrorist Units 1972-2017

Friday, November 3rd, 2017

I’ve collected Osprey books for over 30 years. They remain some of my best historical reference material, in particular because of the excellent artist plates in each volume.

One of their latest releases is “Elite 220: European Counter-Terrorist Units 1972-2017” which examines the evolution and growth of both Mil and LE organizations devoted specifically with the CT mission.

IMG_5183

At only 64-pages, the volume doesn’t go into great detail but it does offer the highlights. Beginning with 1972’s tragedy at the Olympic Village in Munich, author Leigh Neville then examines how the threat has changed. Next, he discusses technical innovations such as the use of specialized vehicles and then he delves into the units themselves. By country, Neville basic order of battle and highlights specific operations. These are accompanied by photographs as well as some top notch work by illustrator Adam Hook.

IMG_5184

The artist plates are very well researched. Take for instance the image above which showcases (l-r) British 22 SAS, French GIGN and London Metropolitan Police SCO19. The image is so up-to-date with 2017 that it has the GIGN member in Arc’teryx coveralls, a recent acquisition of that team’s kit bag.

Not only do I highly recommend the Osprey series, but in particular those works by Leigh Neville. His dedication to accuracy is admirable.

Blue Force Gear to Showcase New Tactical Equipment At NTOA Tactical Conference & Trade Show

Wednesday, September 20th, 2017

POOLER, Ga., Sept. 15, 2017 – As the designer and manufacturer of the world’s finest weapon slings and tactical equipment, Blue Force Gear is preparing to showcase two of its most popular products at the NTOA Tactical Operations Conference & Trade Show in Phoenix, Arizona. From Sept. 24-29 at the Sheraton Grand Phoenix, show attendees will be able to see firsthand why the MicroTKN!™ and MARCO® are the two newest must-have products in tactical operations.

The MicroTKN! is the smallest version of the Trauma Kit NOW!™ and is designed to hold essential lifesaving medical supplies in a small, easy-to-carry pack that takes up minimal space and carries a low profile. Blue Force Gear’s goal with the MicroTKN! is to change the mindset of everyday carry to include trauma care, keeping tactical operators prepared for even the most drastic of situations. The kit comes in three options: basic, advanced and unfilled.

With the MARCO marking stick dispenser, Blue Force Gear has revolutionized room clearing in tactical operations with a more efficient, effective and compact way to carry marking lights. Users save critical time during preparation during pre-mission tasks by not having to unwrap, tape, and bundle chem sticks. The dispenser design makes it simple for users – simply open the Mylar package with the pre-loaded dispenser, insert the MARCO dispenser inside of the belt or MOLLE holster and proceed with the mission. The design provides a low profile and prevents the accidental activation of a chem stick, which can cause unwanted light.

Product demonstrations and seminars for the MicroTKN! and MARCO will be available at the Blue Force Gear booth number 811. Attendees will also have the chance to learn from educational courses and try interactive exhibits during the expo.

“We’re dedicated to providing the best tactical gear possible to law enforcement nationwide,” said Ashley Burnsed, CEO of Blue Force Gear. “The NTOA conference is a great opportunity to meet with our customers and we’re looking forward to showing them some of our next-generation gear from 2017.”
