SSD Saturday Night At The Movies Presents ‘The Pentagon Wars’

Sunday, August 7th, 2016

I spent the week with industry at the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market. Many attended a rather disappointing government briefing on an Arctic Clothing System requirement. It made me think about the myriad other programmatic issues that pop up and I knew the perfect film for Saturday Night at the Movies, HBO’s ‘The Pentagon Wars’.

Starring Kelsey Grammer and Cary Elwes, ‘The Pentagon Wars’ is based on the book of the same name by Col James G. Burton (USAF, Ret) and showcases the development of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle.

Ironically, we actually watched portions of this movie when I attended Air Force Operational Test Command’s Test Officer Course and yet, similar issues continue to crop up across the acquisition enterprise.

Regardless, remember, it’s a movie, not a documentary, and enjoy.

‘The Art Of Warrior Leadership’ by Roy A Woodall

Wednesday, July 20th, 2016

Author Roy A Woodall, Jr has written a book entitled, “The Art of Warrior Leadership”.  According to his bio, he has more than 30 years of military and police service. At age 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Army as an Infantryman serving more than 12 years as a Non Commissioned Officer. Roy studied journalism and English in college prior to a career in Law Enforcement. As a career Police Officer He served as a SWAT team sniper, firearms instructor, armorer, and police supervisor. Roy has deployed overseas for the U.S. Government as tactical trainer and subject matter expert. He has trained military and police in Iraq, Afghanistan, Nepal, and Burkina Faso. Roy is a frequent contributor to online magazines, print magazines, and has recently authored several books on leadership, tactics, and survival.

Mr Woodall offered us this description of ‘The Art Of Warrior Leadership’:

As I look around the world today it is easy to identify lots of problems. Pointing to a problem and complaining loudly is easy; fixing the problem is hard. In the military and later in my law enforcement career I was taught a basic code on how to conduct myself. These principles are the foundation that I choose to live by today. Imagine what could be accomplished if today’s leaders whether they wear a uniform or civilian clothes lived by just these six fundamental character traits.
• Courage
• Honor
• Responsibility
• Integrity
• Truthfulness
• Ownership

Anyone who has ever thought of leadership is easy has never been confronted with a complex ethical dilemma. People, problems, and situations are a difficult and it is rare when a decision does not have some negative consequences for somebody or something. Doing the right thing and making hard decisions is what leaders get paid for. Never forget that leadership is a privilege. These six words need to be more than just suggestions, much more. To all the warrior leaders out there, stay safe and be value added every day. The world needs you now more than ever.

‘Lethal Force’ by Tony Long

Tuesday, June 14th, 2016

Some of SSDs readers, and those in the trade, may remember Tony from his time with Edgar Brothers but may not know that having retired in 2008 after 33 years service with the London Met and 25 years with the Met’s Specialist Firearms team, in 2014 he was charged with the death of an armed suspect who together with two others were on route to rob and kill rival drug dealers. Tony faced a murder trial in 2015 and was rightly acquitted. He has written the book ‘Lethal Force‘ to put the record straight and explain the difficulties of being an armed officer within a police service and a society that is predominately unarmed. I can’t wait to read it.
