SOMA – USIA

USIA has a bag specifically for the USAF PJ community, designed with their direct inputting.

It wouldn’t be much good if all of the contents got wet so it integrates a YKK waterproof zipper making it divable to 130 ft. It has also been certified for airborne operations by the USAF.

The bag is slightly larger than the Special Operations Forces Aidman’s Bag. USIA integrated the O2 system into the pack and added a little more room than is in their 2400 sq in SOFA Aidman’s Pack.

SOMA – Marz Tactical

Wednesday, December 18th, 2013

Marz Tactical has introduced a headrest harness for their Multi-Mode IFAK, unveiled last year here at SOMA. It allows you to mount the rear of a headrest where it is easily accessible. The buckle and strapping system keeps it secure yet allows deployment in an instant.

Marz has also made a change to the interior of the Multi-Mode IFAK. Based on user feedback, the horizontal elastic strap has been replaced with a flat pocket.

SOMA – NARescue

Wednesday, December 18th, 2013

With the curtailing of live tissue training for the US military, SOMA was wall-to-wall manikins. But for me, one stuck out. North American Rescue has developed a full line of Combat Trauma Simulators that replicate typical injuries experienced on the modern battlefield. Developed by a former Combat Trauma Surgeon, the line consists of five hyper-realistic manikins that simulate different wounding patterns, ranging from facial trauma to amputation. Each manikin is anatomically correct, featuring a five liter blood reservoir in the chest for bleeding. The internal skeleton is supported by airplane cable and an untethered remote control system regulates simulated breathing and other signs of life. Each manikin has Dragon Skin (not the armor system) a rugged silicone based material that also demonstrates realistic tactile response. The manikins are water resistant, making difficult training situations like inclement weather possible. Training capabilities include tourniquet application, wound packing, burn treatments and bowel evisceration.

SOMA – Rip Shears

Tuesday, December 17th, 2013

The RIPPER unit from RipShears is an attachment for standard EMT shears allowing the medic to snip a hole in a garment, boot, or strap which obscures an injury, and then rip it open in a single motion. It’s much faster than the traditional scissors motion. Additionally, their improved design now integrates an O2 wrench.

20131214-170920.jpg

Featuring user-replaceable 440A surgical blades, the RIPPER unit is 100% Made in the USA and will bolt onto the handle of most 7-1/4″ or 7-1/2″ trauma shears. It can purchased alone in Black or as a complete RipShears unit that includes imported trauma shears with Black, Orange, OD Green or Coyote handles. Additionally, the RIPPER unit is available in a glow-in-the-dark Firefly model. Recently, they improved the Rip shears by adding a Black Titanium Nitride coating, and increased the serrations on the blades that are hardened to a Rockwell hardness of 56C. And a new Gold coated blade with Pink handles was just introduced for the Ladies, or for situations where you don’t want your shears to walk off.

Beyond Announces M9 Medic Pant

M9 Medic Pant

At SOMA, Beyond announced the new M9 Medic Pant. The pant is made from milspec 50/50 NyCo Ripstop and features a hook and loop waistband, open hand pockets with mesh lining, universal kneepad pockets, back of knee hook and loop tightening system, and hook and loop ankle closure. However, the primary feature of the M9 Medic Pant is the oversized left and right front facing thigh cargo pockets, designed specifically to fit an IFAK. This placement is optimal because medics often function in a kneeling position when dealing with patients.

Phokus Low Vis Trauma Kit

Interestingly, this pant was developed for use with the Lo Visibility SONS Trauma Kit from Phokus Research Group, which was a customer-driven request. And while these pants are cool, it really demonstrates the flexibility of Beyond in creating user-specific solutions. I overheard several conversations with potential customers at SOMA and this modification really got the creative juices flowing for those who saw it. Beyond is a very dynamic company and I recommend you talk to them if you are looking for a custom clothing solution.

SOMA – ITTS

Tuesday, December 17th, 2013

Innovative Tactical Training Solutions, builders of the H60 Casevac simulator have introduced a new Little Bird Extrication Scenario Trainer. It is a portable and reusable MH-6 size helo cabin for multi-purpose extrication exercises. I also see where it could be used for static load training if planks are installed. The model seen here does not include planks.

20131214-110306.jpg

The trainer is designed to be used with the ITTS TOMManikin and Android based Sensory Control Unit. The front compartment can be used as a trap for the TOMManikin and features extractable doors. The SCU can be used to control noise and a fog unit to introduce a little chaos into the scenario. Additionally, ITTS has integrated a remote camera into the design to allow evaluators access to the action. An on-board generator allows for use in remote locations and facilitates quick scenario reset.

ITTS products are available for unit and agency purchase from ADS Inc

SOMA – Global Protection Medical Group

Monday, December 16th, 2013

The Mechanical Blood Volumizer is a militarized version of the Extremity Exsanguination Device from Global Protection Medical Group.

20131214-103155.jpg

Some of you may remember the old MAST Trousers. They had several issues including bulk, complexity, and vulnerability to ambient pressure shifts. The MBV has none of those issues.

Taking less than 30 seconds you can remove 90% of the blood from the lower extremities. Generally, this is accomplished prior to knee or leg surgery. But, they’ve found that it can also be used during shock and cardiac incidents to help improve blood pressure to the core. Additional benefits include that it’s your own blood and the effect is instantaneous.

20131214-102524.jpg

It is disposable and they have developed versions for the arms. Packaging has been improved over this early version that you see here.
