MultiCam Materials – 1000D Cordura

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

This is the first in a series of bi-weekly articles presented by Duro Textiles LLC on the various fabrics they offer in the MultiCam camouflage pattern. MultiCam is a single camouflage pattern designed to help the wearer hide in varied environments, seasons, elevations, and light conditions. After a great deal of commercial success and adoption by elements of US Special Operations Forces, in 2010 MultiCam was selected for use by the US Army as its Operation Enduring Freedom Camouflage Pattern (OCP).

Here you can see the US Army’s Medium Rucksack designed for use in Afghanistan. Designed to carry up to 60 pounds, the Medium Rucksack utilizes a special U-shaped frame that cradles the rear armor plate of an IOTV. The pack is produced as part of the MOLLE contact by both BAE Systems and ATK Eagle.

1000D Cordura is the most ubiquitous MultiCam fabric in use. It is also the heaviest MultiCam fabric. Due to its high abrasion resistance it has been adopted for use by the US Army for use in their MOLLE systems including packs and pouches. It is coated on the back side for water resistance and the the face features a a durable water repellent finish.

Specs:
Finished Width – 60 inches cuttable
Finished Weight – 9.8 oz/yd² approximately
Fiber Content – 100% nylon
Construction – 35/30 (warp/fill)
Breaking Strength – 593/580 (warp/fill) (lbs, minimum)

Duro offers progressive pricing based on the number of yards ordered. For more information on this or any of the full line of MultiCam fabrics visit www.multicamfabric.com or email Galpen_Ben@DuroLink.com.

Platatac Nomad Pack

Monday, February 6th, 2012

Platac’s tagline for the new Nomad Pack is “Overt is the New Covert”. The idea is to hide in plain sight and the Nomad does that. Appearing as a mild mannered commuter pack, the Nomad is specifically designed to accommodate the HK-G36C and Short Barreled M4 Carbine variants. Thanks to an ingenuous hideaway extender sleeve it will also fit longer barreled weapons.

It has hideaway straps for use as carry-on luggage, or you can criss-cross the shoulder straps to make a sling bag. Additionally, the interior of the main compartment includes PALS webbing. Yes, it’s available in MultiCam but the Black and Grey combo looks pretty good for playing the Grey Man

Saturday, February 4th, 2012

Viper Headwear was started by a US Army SF vet. Their new “Snake Eater” is a fitted cap for tactical operators constructed from genuine Crye Precision Multicam® 50/50 Nylon/Cotton Cordura® material. Caps can be ordered with or without the 2″ x 3.5″ Velcro® loop material on the front of the cap, 1.5″ x 1.5″ loop on top, and 1″ x 4″ or 1″ x 6″ Velcro® loop material on the back for shorter 4-inch or standard 6-inch nametapes.

For added comfort when wearing communications headsets, this cap does not include the button on top and it features an unstructured, lower crown.

ADS Reveals Camo ExpertiseADS Tactical

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

ADS Inc never stops surprising us. Over time, we’ve come to know about their Ghostex program and their work with HyperStealth Biotechnology Corp on specialized camouflage patterns for Afghanistan. Most recently, they’ve teamed with Guy Cramer to win as spot as finalists in the US Army’s most ambitious camouflage improvement effort to date.

Now, they’ve launched a new section of their website dedicated to all of their camouflage programs. Not only will you see some better images of their US4CES-Delta patterns that we revealed here on SSD during SHOT Show, but they also reveal additional information on their Army-finalist Alpha family of patterns as well as some a few of the variants from the Ghostex Advanced Camouflage System.

Last, but certainly not least, ADS has been a prime supplier of critical clothing and equipment in the US Army’s Operation Enduring Freedom Camouflage Pattern (OCP), commercially known as MultiCam. Both FREE and ECWCS Gen III are provided by ADS Inc and they have adopted both environmental clothing systems for issue in OCP.

ADS has informed me that they plan on adding to the camo section of the website as new information becomes available. In particular, we are looking forward to seeing additional Ghostex patterns as well as a glimpse of what their Army candidate patterns will look like on ACUs and OCIE. It is definitely worth taking a look at what they have going on.

The first item is a very simple shell garment made from a reversible waterproof breathable fabric which can be printed on both sides. It currently weighs 9.6 oz but should weigh in around 6 oz once the final version comes to market. For example, they are ditching the pocket and changing the zipper and seam tape.

This pack is based on a commercial model WorkSack and will be available in March with a number of different options including drain holds, Terminal Attack Controller options, or as a lid for biggest dumb pack you ever saw. Like all Cilo Gear products its super lightweight, weighing less than a pound, with a final weight pending a couple of new design concepts.
