Raytheon ELCAN Teams with Leonardo Germany to Deliver Main Combat Sights to the Bundeswehr

Monday, December 6th, 2021

ELCAN Specter DR dual-role sight will be a vital component of the optronic system for infantry missions

Raytheon ELCAN, a Raytheon Technologies subsidiary, and LEONARDO Germany, a Leonardo SpA subsidiary, were awarded a contract for 107,929 sights to provide the main combat sight (HKV) for the German Armed Forces. Leonardo Germany is the prime contractor to the BAAINBw and will provide in-country support.

The ELCAN Specter DR 1-4x is a combined reflex and telescopic sight allowing soldiers to see close up or far away with a single sight. The sights chosen by the Bundeswehr will have a bullet-drop compensator, or BDC, etched reticle and a Picatinny/STANAG rail integrated into the housing with an ambidextrous, easy-to-use, throw lever to switch instantly between magnifications. The sights have an integrated laser filter to help keep soldiers safer on the battlefield.

“The Specter DR dual-role sight is Canadian technology and battle-proven with forces across NATO,” said Mike Lewis, rifle sights mission area lead for Raytheon ELCAN. “The variable magnification and durability of the Specter is a great advantage for the German Armed Forces.”

Deliveries started in the third quarter of 2021.

TNVC PVS-14 Powered Bridge Mount (PBM-A) Awarded Patent

Wednesday, October 20th, 2021

Originally introduced in 2019, the TNVC TNV/PVS-14 PBM-A (Powered Bridge Mount – Auxiliary Power) was developed to provide allow end-users to quickly, easily, and effectively convert already-fielded PVS-14 MNVDs (Monocular Night Vision Devices) into a BNVD (Binocular Night Vision Device) configuration. Already in use with military, law enforcement, and individual users, the TNVC PBM has been awarded Patent # US 11,131,843 B2 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

tnvc.com/shop/tnvc-pvs14-powered-bridge-mount

While bridge systems that allow two PVS-14 MNVDs to be bridged together are not in and of themselves unique, the patented TNVC PBM features a unique power control system that not only allows both PVS-14s to powered and controlled using a single power control knob and on-board AA battery located within the Powered Bridge Mount. Combined with the articulating design and auxiliary power connection on the PBM-A provides a similar capability and feature set to the USSOCOM AN/PVS-31 family as a retro-fit capability.

Binocular night vision goggles offer significant advantages over individual monocular systems, such as improved depth perception and situational awareness, allowing end-users to process information faster and more accurately. While purpose designed dedicated binocular systems do continue to have advantages over bridged MNVDs such as overall system weight, as much of DoD begins to transition its close combat formations to binocular night vision goggles with programs such as the ENVG-B, many individuals and organizations that already possess PVS-14 MNVDs may not find it immediate feasible or cost-effective to replace them with dedicated binocular systems. The TNV/PVS-14 PBM-A allows those individuals and organizations to obtain many of the advantages of binocular systems without having to purchase brand new dedicated BNVDs.

Conversion to the PBM is non-permanent, and can be quickly accomplished in the field, and is compatible with readily available BNVS “dovetail” style mounts already in use by many organizations. The PBM also features a distinctive “yoke and harness” attachment system to provide the best possible image to the end user by ensuring optical and mechanical alignment of the individual PVS-14s, and is stable enough for collimation.*

Milipol 2021: Meprolight Presents the Mepro TIGON – a Hybrid Thermal & Red Dot sight for Both Day & Night target Acquisition

Tuesday, October 19th, 2021

Combining the advantages of uncooled thermal technology with clear, see-through day optics in a single sight, the Mepro TIGON system enables significantly improved operational flexibility

Milipol Paris, 19-22 October, Parc d’Exposition, Stand 5A D067

19th of October 2021 Israel. Meprolight (1990) Ltd. – a member of the SK Group (founded by Mr. Samy Katsav) is a leading manufacturer of electro-optical systems, thermal and night vision equipment, as well as self-illuminated sights for military, law enforcement and civilian applications. The company has completed development of the advanced MIL-STD Mepro TIGON sight. The system integrates the advantages of uncooled thermal imaging technology with those of see-through day optics (“red -dot” sights) in a single product, enabling complete operational flexibility, day and night.

Users in the defense, law enforcement and HLS sectors can benefit from the highly-advanced features of the TIGON, in one, extremely cost-effective solution.

The integrated technology enables operational flexibility for mission success in open terrain, CQB scenarios, densely-vegetated areas – such as jungles – and more. Being compact and lightweight, it reduces weapon-load, improves weapon balance, and simplifies operations compared with similar non-integrated solutions.

For day use, the Mepro TIGON’s large transparent display window and clearly-visible reticle enable rapid target acquisition, with both eyes open. At night, the thermal image projected onto the same display effectively supports spotting and engaging targets in complete darkness and harsh environment conditions, including smoke and dust.

To increase the effective day range of the sight, a tactical magnifier can be fitted behind it, while the digital x2 zoom of its thermal channel may be employed at night.

Additional features and advantages include:

– High accuracy zeroing system

– Wide FOV in both day and thermal modes

– Light sensor for seamless auto-adjustment of day reticle brightness

– Long operating time – thousands of hours in day mode, and more than five continuous hours in thermal mode

– Power-saving mechanism for maximum energy efficiency, without compromising reticle availability

– Low operating costs – powered by two commercial “AA” batteries

– Connectivity enabled through a video-out interface for external monitors and communications systems

– Quick-release high-durability Picatinny rail (MIL-STD-1913) mount

“The Mepro TIGON was developed in direct response to the needs of military, security, and law enforcement users for a sight that both, has high performance capabilities, and, is cost-effective enough to enable large-scale fielding for significantly increasing numbers of night-combat enabled users within forces,” says David Shenhav, S.V.P. Sales & Marketing – Defense, at Meprolight. “It efficiently supports seamless transition between day and night operations combined with changing tactical scenarios, all while subject to harsh environmental and weather conditions.

The system is already in the process of being evaluated by the IDF and introduced to select forces around the world.”

AUSA 21 – XM1176 System

Friday, October 15th, 2021

Rheinmetall is developing the XM1176 System which provides programmable high velocity 40mm rounds which increase first round hit probability and can be used to defeat targets in defilade.

In this photo you can see the fire control system to the right. It communicates with the computer attached to the weapon at the lower left and then sends the solution to the round as via the IR transmitter mounted above the barrel.

The system can store up to six air burst munition profiles. Additionally, there is a 75m arming distance and internal self-destruct mechanism.

AUSA 21 – L3 Harris Next Generation Squad Weapon Fire Control

Tuesday, October 12th, 2021

We were surprised to see a mock-up of the L3 Harris Next Generation Squad Weapon Fire Control candidate.

The NGSW-FC provides an integrated approach to targeting by combining range-finding capability, ballistic computation, and environmental sensors that increase the probability of accurate targeting while decreasing the time to engage a threat.

NGSW-FC is intended for use with the still under development Next Generation Squad Weapons and is currently in source selection with a program award coming soon. However, it can also be used with legacy weapon systems.

L3 Harris is teamed with Leupold and is competition for NGSW-FC with Vortex Optics.
