Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2018

Sunday, January 28th, 2018

On the way back to the East Coast from Vegas, I stopped in Denver for the combined snow show and Outdoor Retailer Winter Market. I had always attended the outdoor retailer shows in Salt Lake City, so I wanted to check out this new venue. I guess because it’s a combined show, the space seemed cramped. Although I was only on the ground for one day, there was plenty to see. I will give you some highlights of what I ran across.

This is the first of three OR shows in Denver this year. The summer market will be in July and the next winter market will be in November.

Fimbulvetr Presents Lightweight and Heavy Duty News at this Year’s Outdoor Retailer

Friday, January 19th, 2018

The Norwegian brand Fimbulvetr continues its revolutionary path to change the snowshoe category. At Outdoor Retailer in January 2018, the company is introducing 3 major upgrades to their product portfolio.

F01B5B6E-B497-4C4B-99AE-E714674AED23

1. New model TRAILR: Smaller size for mobility and pace
Fimbulvetr TRAILR has been designed and tested over the last 12 months, based on the same premium qualities as every Fimbulvetr snowshoe. The concept came to life after feedback from users in USA and Canada, requesting the unique Fimbulvetr experience on a smaller snowshoe. The result is the slimmest Fimbulvetr model ever, optimized for mobility and speed, on and off the tracks.

2. Launching the A-Series and X-Series
In 2018/19 all Fimbulvetr snowshoes will be available in two sets of technical specifications – the A- Series and the X-Series.
A-Series: Lightweight performance
The A-Series provides a full Fimbulvetr experience, focusing on lightness and flexibility. They come with a new crampon and heel-lifts design, in a super strong and innovative material; Grilamid®. At a lower selling price, the Fimbulvetr brand is now accessible to a wider crowd of outdoors people.
X-Series: Heavy duty impact
The X-series signifies the extreme version of each Fimbulvetr model. At a premium price, they are configured for the most progressive and aggressive use. The snowshoe is produced in a slightly stiffer compound, and includes AISI 316 stainless steel crampons and heel-lifts.

3. The brand new Hugin Binding. An ultimate upgrade for current snowshoes, and available on all new models.
The Hugin Binding is a fully redesigned version of the original Fimbulvetr binding, for ease of use and stability. Straps and buckles are swapped for an efficient lace and lock system. The lacing provides tight, even pressure and support around the foot, kept in place by an intuitive and roust locking mechanism.

BioLite SolarHome 620

Monday, August 7th, 2017

At the recent Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, BioLite gave everyone a sneak peek of their new SolarHome 620 system. It consists of control box, 6w solar panel, motion sensor security light and two ceiling mounted lights. Designed to produce household power for off-the-grid dwelllings in India and West Africa, it will work just as well for those who have hunting cabins, DIY van campers and have to set up regularly in austere areas.

The heart if this system is this control box which not only gives real-time feedback on power, but also serves as an light, MP3 player and terrestrial radio.

They’ve already deployed thousands of these systems in emerging markets, and they plan to launch it here in the Spring. However, a limited run of 500 will be offered in November. Based on the existing deployments of the SolarHome 620, the World Bank has issued this spec sheet which gives some realistic performance data.

Gerber Introduces New Fishing Collection Built For The Adventure Angler

Monday, July 31st, 2017

We recently had a chance to check out this new fishing line of tools from Gerber during last week’s Outdoor Retailer Summer Market. We already showed you one product. Now, here’s an overview of the whole line.

PORTLAND, OREGON – GERBER, an industry-leading manufacturer of personal knives, multi-tools, and gear, announced today that it will debut a category-defining collection of fishing products at iCAST 2017 in Orlando, Florida. The first look comes ahead of the spring 2018 launch date, when the collection becomes available for purchase nationwide.
For a new breed of fishing, a new generation of tools. Hardcore anglers need tools that work even harder. Tools that take them beyond the beaten path, beyond self-imposed limits, beyond anything and everything that stands in their way. Gerber introduces a new line of multi-functional fishing products that outfit the angler from the trek in, to the catch, to the victorious journey home. These tools are purpose-built for the adventure to extend the experience anywhere and everywhere the angler dares to tread.

“Gerber is known for reimagining the common tool and delivering intuitive, multi-functional gear.” said Andrew Gritzbaugh, Vice President of Marketing at Gerber. “This new collection of fishing products is rooted in Gerber’s extensive experience developing problem-solving products for users in expeditionary environments – from US Soldiers in Afghanistan to Elk Hunters in Montana. This new fishing collection will serve the experienced angler by providing intelligent design, insightful material combinations, and progressive new technologies that will enable them to venture farther and fish beyond.”

The new collection features 12 multi-functional tools that are painstakingly designed and tested, because if it’s taking up space in a kayak, on an ATV, or inside a vest, it better be worth it. Do more and go farther while taking up less space – explore a few leading products.
