ORWM – Beyond

Tuesday, January 10th, 2017

Coming this Summer, this is the Argus Hoodie from Beyond. It’s made from a 300 weight, brushed Polartec fleece. I like the crossover hood opening and monkey paw feature. The Argus Hoodie will be offered in Coyote, as seen here.

This is the Level 10 is based on the Arctic Combat Concept ensemble accomplished last year.  When it’s used as a system it will go down to -50 deg F in static – situation and to -70 Deg F while moving thanks to the 7 oz Climashield fill.  It incorporates a North American Coyote ruff, available for separate order in packs of two.  This is because the ruffs are non-Berry but also the best available for use in extreme cold environments.  Due to the Berry issue, Beyond worked within the framework of the DFAR and offers them for separate order.

The front flap can be opened with a one hand pull to access an armor carrier beneath.

The Anorak features dual side zips to facilitate donning and doffing and the seat of both Anorak and Trouser are reinforced with Cordura.

Beyond products are available for unit and agency order through ADS Inc.

ORWM – Altama

Tuesday, January 10th, 2017

I was surprised to find Altama in the Mystery Ranch booth and even more surprised to get a sneak Peek of some new shoes being officially released at next week’s SHOT Show.

This is the Aboottabad (in honor of the location of UBL’s demise) series. It consists of a Trail Run Low and Trail Run Mid and a Mid to Heavy Weight Hiker.

All of the outsoles in this line get their DNA from the old Panama tread of the USGI Jungle Boot.

Here’s an OTB Maritime Assault Shoe in Low Viz colors.

ORWM – Mystery Ranch

Tuesday, January 10th, 2017

This report on new items from Mystery Ranch Outdoor products, coming Fall 17. The military/tactical items will come next week at SHOT Show. Both of these are what I would consider commuter bags.

At 22 liters, the Rip Ruck is made from 420D Cordura in a mountain ruck style.  Look for a separate zippered pocket for a laptop next to the back along with a dual zipper main pocket and two smaller outer pockets which replicate the two-zipper styling.

The Slick is just that.  It’s a 23 liter pack made from ripstop nylon and features a dedicated, zippered, laptop compartment along with a main pocket with a half moon zippered opening.  On either side are slit pockets which will accept a water bottle.

Primaloft, Inc To Introduce Primaloft Black Insulation at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2017

Friday, December 30th, 2016

LATHAM, N.Y. (December, 2016) – PrimaLoft, Inc., the world leader in providing comfort solutions with high-performance insulations and fabrics, will introduce PrimaLoft® Black Insulation ThermoPlume, the industry’s highest-performing blowable synthetic insulation with the look and feel of natural down, at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2017. PrimaLoft® Black Insulation ThermoPlume features a unique blend of water-resistant PrimaLoft® fibers that deliver insulating loft, wet weather protection and compressibility. Black ThermoPlume is manufactured with small, silky tufts of fiber plumes that collectively form a loose fill insulation, replicating the lightweight warmth, softness and compressibility of natural goose down. Its construction allows for it to be blown through traditional down-blowing manufacturing equipment, simplifying the manufacturing process for brands enabling product designers the freedom to create innovative garments combining the look and feel of down with the water-resistant performance of a synthetic. Respected brands, such as Montane, are among the first to adopt this technology for fall ’17. In addition to PrimaLoft® Black Insulation ThermoPlume, the brand will showcase an expanded presence for the company’s range of Active and Eco products, most notably, PrimaLoft® Gold Insulation Active and PrimaLoft® Gold Insulation Eco, at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market, booth #40043.

“PrimaLoft® Black Insulation ThermoPlume is not only the highest performing blowable synthetic insulation, but also fills a growing demand for innovation from designers, brands and consumers looking to move away from down, without sacrificing performance,” said Mike Joyce, president and CEO of PrimaLoft, Inc. “Providing a blowable, high-performing synthetic that acts as a true replacement for down allows brands to replicate the design aesthetic and the manufacturing process of a down garment. This helps to simplify the supply chain, combat the volatility of down prices and provides piece of mind when it comes to the ethical sourcing of materials.”

PrimaLoft® Black Insulation ThermoPlume delivers thermal properties equivalent to 550 fill power down in construction, while a water-resistant proprietary finish ensures warmth even in wet conditions.

Montane, a leading engineer of innovative extreme sports clothing and equipment, features PrimaLoft® Black Insulation ThermoPlume in its new Men’s Icarus and Women’s Phoenix Jackets for fall ’17, with streamlined designs ideal for both layering and standalone use.

“The new all-synthetic ThermoPlume from PrimaLoft® enabled our designers to leverage the benefits of synthetic down through the same efficient production methods as natural down for our fall winter 2017 range,” said Lottie Watkinson, design manager at Montane. “Mimicking natural down more closely than ever before, but with all the wet weather performance advantages of PrimaLoft®, our design team has worked to harness its innovative properties to bring consumers cutting edge, down centric styles. The packability and thermal efficiency of ThermoPlume lends itself to our technical yet versatile fall winter 2017 insulation portfolio in our new Icarus and Phoenix Jackets.”

Para’kito Misquito Repellent

Monday, August 22nd, 2016

We checked out Para’kito misquito repellent at the recent Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Salt Lake City.

While they offer several products, we were particularly interested in their DEET-free bands. Rather than the chemicals we are used to seeing, Para’kito relies on essential oils whixh gibe off a slight smell of lemon, kind of like a cintronella candle.

It’s a good alternative for those of you who don’t want to use DEET and the refillable inserts for the bands are intended to last 14 days each. Also offered as a clip which can be hung from your gear, either way, they offer a spehere of protection that doesn’t extend much beyond your personal space.

ORSM – MSR Toughstake

Thursday, August 11th, 2016

MSR has introduced the Snow/Sand Stakes in two sizes, along with a hammer. The tent’s guylines are attached to the notch on the wide, spade-like portion of the stake, allowing it to stay fast in loose mediums like snow and sand.
