OR – Geigerrig

Friday, January 25th, 2013

There are three key benefits that the Geigerrig pressurized hydration system offers military and law enforcement personnel.

Water Works for You – You can use it for hydration as well as sanitation. Additionally, the pressurized stream to irrigate wounds.

Access to Additional Water – They have in-lin filters including a new 2 micron mechanical virus filter.

Maintenance – Dishwasher safe at home. In the field you can turn it inside out.

Now, they’ve introduced a dedicated tactical line. Offered in Coyote and Black, there are multiple systems available all the way up to a 1600 cu in pack.

One standout is the Guardian. The bladder is sandwiched between two Guardian plates which increases spray pressure. The plates also protect the bladder from damage and are a slick material to facilitate getting in and out of vehicles.

RuckPack

Monday, November 26th, 2012

A friend emailed me the other day and said that he saw this cool energy supplement called RuckPack on last week’s “Shark Tank.” I went back and checked out the episode online. Turns out that the frontman for RuckPack is USMC Major Robert Dyer, an Aviator and current professor of Accounting at his alma mater the US Naval Academy.

You might notice two sets of wings on Maj Dyer. Not only is he an Aviator but also a parachutist and has served with 1st Force Reconnaissance as well as MARSOC. In fact, that’s where the idea for RuckPack came from. You see, RuckPack isn’t like your average energy supplement. It contains no caffeine, a prime ingredient in most others. The idea was that Marines were taking energy supplements along on missions to go along with their MREs. Unfortunately, traditionally, energy supplements raise you up and the send you crashing. It’s not as big a deal at home as it is on a battlefield.

So Maj Dyer set to work formulating a drink made from natural ingredients consisting of vitamins and a few other ingredients. So far they’ve sold out their initial run of shots and have an additional 80,000 inbound (including some with caffeine for those who want it).

By the way, Maj Dyer raised $150,000 in operating capital during his visit to the “Shark Tank.”

Combat Support System

Tuesday, October 30th, 2012

The innocuously named Combat Support System is one of the coolest things I’ve seen recently. Designed to hold your helmet, armor and weapon up, of of the ground, it’s a great storage solution for deployed troops. It includes glow in the dark strips so that you can find your kit in the middle of the night (or day in a dark room if you’re cellmate roomie is on nightshift).

The kit includes –
1 weapon hold
1 vest hold
1 backbone
2 hitch pins (connected to backbone)
2 multi-purpose screws (wood, metal and masonry)

The only down side I see is that you need a wall to attach it to. Of course, I’m sure that resourceful individuals who find themselves without walls will come up with something.

SEK Solutions to Supply AquaSource Water Tanker to USMC

Friday, August 17th, 2012

SEK Solutions has announced that it has been awarded an order from the US Marine Corps to supply 2,613 AquaSource Water Tanker 5 Gallon (20L) Collapsible Water Bags manufactured by Source Hydration for the Marines’ Mountain Cold Weather and General Support Equipment Program.

Developed specifically for the requirements of the US Marine Corps, the Source Aquasource reduces the weight of the system by 13.4 pounds compared to the old Collapsible Water Bag procured through the Marine Enhancement Project. In addition to its primary function as providing a water resupply system that is more easily transported by a Marine Rifle Squad during dismounted operations, the Source Aquasource also provides capability to function as a Vehicle Hydration System for mounted operations when paired with the Vehicle Hydration Hub Upgrade Kit, as well as being able to be used as a Field Shower system when paired with the Field Shower Upgrade Kit.

AquaSource is a durable, collapsible, backpackable hydration alternative to traditional water cans. Source uses a Glass-like reservoir technology that helps eliminate fungus and the absorption of odd tastes by the bladder.

OR – Jetboil

Many of you may be familiar with the Jetboil line of portable cooking systems. They have just introduced a new version of the popular Flash stove with a genuine MultiCam neoprene cozy that goes around the vessel. Additionally, the shroud that houses the burner base is an OD color that matches the MultiCam quite well. The burner incorporates a piezo igniter. Finally, Jetboil pioneered the use the FluxRing, a heat exchanger technology that looks like a series of fins. It doubles the fuel efficiency of the Jetboil stove because it heats up so quickly. It also cools more quickly than other stoves as well.

Weighing in at 14oz (without fuel), the entire kit and caboodle stores inside the vessel for transport.

SureAquaStraw+ADS Tactical

Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

The Australian SureAquaStraw+ uses a membrane to filter contaminants to 10 nanometers (0.01 microns). This includes waterborne bacteria, viruses including Pseudomonas, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus and Fecal Coliforms, plus parasitic contamination by Cryptosporidium, and Giardia. It’s a simple straw design that allows you to dip right into a water source and drink directly from it. Additionally, it is designed to filter up to 1000 liters(264 gallons).

SureAqua products are available for unit and agency purchase from www.ADSinc.com/SureAqua.

Flip-Box

Wednesday, August 1st, 2012

Leading up to Outdoor Retailer you get loads of press releases. Some things are cooler than others, but this one looks interesting.

It’s a cooler that folds flat for transport and storage and flips open with a self-locking design. The Flip-Box is American-made from 100% Apro recyclable polypropylene; the same material used in bicycle helmets.

Look for it at OR in the Sport-Brella booth (BR543).

NEMO Equipment – Helio Pressure Shower

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

The Helio Pressure Shower from NEMO Equipment is great for deployed or back country clean up, whether it’s just you that needs a shower or you are cleaning equipment.

Notice that you don’t have to hang this one upside down to get it to work. Instead, it uses a foot pump to build up pressure.

It comes complete with an 11 liter tank that warms the water in the sun, a hose with spray nozzle, pump, and carrying case. I really like the spray nozzle. It’s just like the one we had in our kitchen sink when I was growing up and it’s very easy to use. I got my hands on a prototype last Summer during Outdoor Retailer and I was duly impressed with the amount of pressure you can build up seeing how it’s powered via a foot pump.
