Sneak Peek – New Holster for Modular Handgun System with Pistol Aiming Light

Thursday, February 7th, 2019

When we showed the new Pistol Aiming Light (PAiL) by LaserMax Defense for the M17/18 Modular Handgun System, there was a lot of concern about there not being a holster for the PAiL equipped pistol. Since the US military plans on buying pistols in the tens of thousands per year and each will be equipped with a holster, this really wasn’t the disaster so many made it out to be. Of course, the Army and industry have already developed a solution.

This is a first look at what will become the new holster for MHS. Because the basis of issue for MHS goes all the way down to Squad Leaders, and the PAiL will go on pistols issued to all Close Combat Forces, this PAiL compatible holster will become the standard Army holster.

A modification of the current interim MHS Holster, it is designed and produced by Safariland.

I picked a PAiL up off the table and thought it was a display model without any guts because it felt so light. It’s only 2.6 oz with battery. Here are a few shots of the PAiL. It’s capabilities include White light, IR Laser and IR Illuminator.

An interesting thing about the size and shape of the PAiL is that it mates with the MHS Trigger Guard to offer a continuous flat surface.

PAiL will commence fielding with the MHS later this year. Additionally, PAiL is already loaded on GSA for those organizations who wish to purchase it.

Samson Manufacturing Releases New SOPROD Cleaning Rod

Wednesday, February 6th, 2019

KEENE, NH – Samson Manufacturing released their new SOPROD™ Cleaning Rod accessory at the 2019 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The SOPROD™ (Patent Pending) returns gun-mounted solid cleaning rod capabilities to firearms equipped with stocks featuring battery compartments.

Designed to fit all battery-compartment style, adjustable stocks on the market, the SOPROD ™ enables users to clear stuck cases and other bore obstructions. The SOPROD™ ships with enough extensions to clean a 20” barrel. Included are two self-adhesive rubber bumpers to line the ends of the storage compartment, and two rubber O-rings which keep the sections together and rattle-free.

An available accessory kit includes a rotating-head which accepts standard GI bore and chamber brushes, and a thread adapter for commercial cleaning accessories. Constructed of solid brass or stainless steel, the SOPROD™ is designed to withstand the abuses GI cleaning rods are regularly subjected to.

While a stand-alone product, the SOPROD™ can be used in conjunction with the patented SOPROD™ Field Survivor™ tool which fits into the cavity of a standard A2 pistol grip or Magpul™ MIAD™. The Field Survivor™ has a male-threaded adapter to act as a handle for the SOPROD™ in its cleaning capacity, and includes a broken shell extractor, bore brush, sight adjustment tool, and a compartment with two spare M4 firing pin retainers.

With the SOPROD™, end-users no longer need to tape cleaning rods to their handguards in the field, or dig one out of their pack under duress. The SOPROD™ rides silently in its compartment until needed and can get your rifle back in action in seconds.

Suggested MSRP is $24.95 for brass, and $22.95 for the stainless version. Agency/unit/bulk pricing is available upon request.

SOCOM GPC Customer At Ft Campbell Seeks Glock Clips

Monday, February 4th, 2019

Guys, educate your Government Purchase Card holders and Contracting Officers on the proper nomenclatures for the equipment you need to complete the mission.

Recently, FedBid.com issued this notice on FedBizOpps.com alerting industry to a SOCOM GPC holder’s desire to buy “Glock 19 Holsters & Clips.” The problem here is that there’s no such thing as a “Glock Clip.” Obviously, the request should have been for magazines, along with the desired capacity.

FedBid is a reverse auction site, operated on behalf of the government by a private company. It lists the item(s) required by the government client and facilitates industry’s bids to provide the gear, but with bids going lower and lower until the lowest price is established. Then, the winner provides the equipment purchased to the government client.

On the surface, the process sounds great, particularly for commodities like cleaning and office supplies. But for some items, the process may result in the client not getting what they want due to poorly written requirements. For instance, asking for “clips.” A vendor could sell the government something that doesn’t meet the actual end user requirement. Worse still, due to the FedBid process, it can be difficult for the client to recoup their funds if the vendor’s solution doesn’t line up with expectations.

Educate those providing your equipment so they don’t inadvertently buy you something you don’t need, or can’t use.

US Army Selects LaserMax Defense Pistol Enhancer as Pistol Aiming Light

Monday, January 28th, 2019

Last fall, the US Army’s Product Manager, Soldier Precision Targeting Devices (PdM SPTD) issued a requirement for a Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) Pistol Aiming Light (PAiL) as a replacement for the AN/PEQ-14 and for use with the new Modular Handgun System.

PAiL must mount to the integrated rail on MHS and offer a white light and Infrared (IR) capability Because the Maneuver Center of Excellence (MCoE) determined that a visible pointer is currently not required PAiL will provide the user with greatly increased P (h) when using Night Vision Goggles (NVG). The additional white light must provide visual recognition in dark or night time applications.

Originally referred to as Multifunction Aiming Light or MFAL, during requirement definition, PdM SPTD took a look at Streamlight TLR-8 and the LaserMax Defense Pistol Enhancer.

Just prior to SHOT Show, LaserMax Defense was informed that the Army had selected their solution, the Pistol Enhancer as the new PAiL.

The switches are designed to be operated while wearing gloves and both the white light and IR illuminator (while using gen III Night Vision Devices) are designed to provide positive weapons ID at 40m.

Capabilities:

WHITE LIGHT: 175 lumens (typical) of white light
IR ILLUMINATOR: 175 mW (typical) of 850nm illumination
IR LASER: 850nm 0.7 mW max (class1) eye safe aiming laser

Length: < 2.8″
Height: < 1.4″ (not below trigger guard)
Width: < 1.5″
Weight: 2.6 ounces with battery

The Pistol Enhancer offers two hours of continuous use with a single CR-123 battery, which can be changed without removing the device from the weapon.
