Warrior East 2017 – Kelty Small Rolling Trunk

July 18th, 2017

Making its debut at Warrior East is the Small Rolling Trunk from Kelty.  It’s about half the size of its big brother at ~5,000 cu in. Made from 1000D Cordura, it features haul handles and four external pockets.

Additionally, it is Berry Compliant. But the big story here is the metal frame.

I’ll categorize it as virtually indestructible. I say virtually because if you challenge Joe with a claim of indestructible, he’ll do anything to prove it wrong, even to the point of wrecking his own equipment.

Unfortunately, that beefy frame is going to have some heft to it, but I don’t have a weight for it yet. Coming very soon, from www.kelty.com/military.

July 17th, 2017

Diving Unlimited International updated their Sniper Weapons Waterproof Bag by incorporating shoulder straps, a drag loop at the top and inner straps to keep the weapon from moving around inside the bag.

Additionally, they’ve introduced the new plastic waterproof zipper. However, like its predecessor, it still features an oral inflation tube.

Warrior East 2017 – Petzl Caritool & Caritool Evo

July 17th, 2017

Petzl’s Caritool (left) was originally designed as an Ice Screw Holder. The carabiner design attaches to a climbing harness (or other belt) and has an integrated clip to held it in place. It can be used to attach a variety of gear, including ear pro on a gun belt.

The newer Caritool Evo (right) has an even deeper basket and a different, rear mounted, tension attachment system so it can be used with wider belts.

Neither are designed as personal protective equipment.

Warrior East 2017 – Footwear Preview From Salewa

July 17th, 2017

Over the past several years, Salewa footwear has become the choice of military, LE, and other tactical users. The Trooper (coming 2018) is the first dedicated tactical boot in their line.

The Trooper is an all Black model, based on the next generation of the Mountain Trainer Mid. However, Salewa has removed all of the metal, and the hooks you see on this prototype will be loops on the production model. Additionally, the Trooper is leather lined.

There will also be an updated version of the Mountain Trainer Leather. Like the Trooper, it will be leather lined.

It will incorporate a new outsole from Vibram.

Finally, Salewa is updating the Wildfire Vent with a wider toe box and forefoot and a new sole system from POMOCA, a name which you may recognize for their climbing skins. The outsole features a sticky rubber.

All three of these Salewa models will be landing in 2018.

Ask SSD “What’s The Latest For USN FR Clothing For Shipboard Wear?”

July 17th, 2017

While development and fielding of an FR Coverall (Improved Flame Resistant Variant) to replace the Blue Coverall has been ongoing for several years, the Navy has been working more recently on a two-piece design. Undergoing trials have been Heritage and Modern variants.

The Heritage variants replicate traditional sea service uniforms, with a Khaki shirt and pant for Officers and Chiefs and a Blue version for lower enlisted and noncommissioned Sailors. Interestingly, the Blue version is similar in appearance to the old Dungarees, but one style harkens all the way back to the Dark Blue on Dark Blue of enlisted deck wear, worn up until WWII. Another option, replaces the Dark Blue shirt with a Light Blue, similar to the Chambray shirts worn until the advent of the current Navy Working Uniform.

On the other hand, there is a Modern variant utilizing the cut of the NWU Type III, which was recently adopted for wear as the service’s utility uniform while ashore, and replaces the AOR 2 pattern with Khaki for officers and Chiefs and Dark Blue for lower enlisted and NCOs.

Additionally, NAVAIR continues to approve FR materials for Deck Jerseys and the service is working on FR base and insulation layers as well as hardshell garments for inclement weather.
