Panteao Productions Website is Live

April 12th, 2011

Panteao Productions has launched their new Panteao website. What’s cool about it is that you can watch their “Make Ready!” series of instructional videos right on the website.

Panteao (pronounced Pan-tē-ō) is Portuguese for Pantheon, which means “a temple or place for the gods” or “a group of persons most highly regarded for contributions to a field or endeavor”. The name is fitting since Panteao Productions produces instructional videos taught by highly regarded instructors from our industry.

Panteao brings you instructors like Paul Howe, Bill Rogers, Massad Ayoob, Bill Jeans, Dave Harrington, Dean Caputo, Jessie Abbate, Bob Vogel, Mark Redl, and Tom Yost with more instructors coming. All are in the one-on-one training style.

Led by industry vet Rick Bravo, known best for his work on Michael Mann’s hard crime film and series Miami Vice, the Panteao team has a wealth of experience in high-speed, high-impact filmmaking ranging from action movies and television to law enforcement and major league sports.

For the first time in the shooting sports/tactical world, you can purchase an instructional DVD or a video subscription to the entire video library – streamed direct in High Definition.

You can also watch free Pro-Tips from the instructors direct from the website. Visit Panteao at: www.panteaoproductions.com

Neptunic Technologies Protective Materials

April 11th, 2011

Developed by Jeremiah Sullivan for use in shark proof suits, this new Neptech material is a replacement for the chain mail suits in use for the past 30 years. In fact, if you’ve ever watched Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, you’ve seen the chain mail suits in use. And, you may have seen a teaser where Jeremiah showed a next generation material that was integrated directly into the wet suit. The goal was to protect from the bite of a great white shark. A few Navy frogmen found out about Neptech and immediately realized that it would be great for land warfare clothing as well as for diving suits.

We’ve seen cut resistant materials before but this one is different. It is truly puncture resistant as well. Sure, if you lay up enough of anything including paper it becomes puncture resistant, but with some materials it becomes too heavy and too bulky to wear as part of your clothing. This is what makes Neptech different.

As you can see in the video, it is a porous, permeable material and yet it fully sheds slashes. When several layers are combined it is capable of preventing stabbing penetrations and can even break a blade. Additionally, based on additional footage I have seen, Neptech materials are flame resistant. All in all, that makes for a great addition to a field uniform if even only for certain special applications.

Down Range Gear’s Great Idea Turns ITW’s QASM on Its Side

April 10th, 2011

We received an email at an odd hour last night from Down Range Gear’s founder telling us he had awoke from a dream with a great idea and just had to turn it into reality. Ten minutes later he had produced the first Down Range Gear QASM Vertical Connector. Once he told us about what he was up to this morning we agreed; it IS a great idea.

The ITW Nexus QASM (Quick Attach Surface Mount) is designed to fit on a piece of 1″ nylon webbing such as in a PALS application to allow you to attach an item to it that is equipped with the male portion of a 1″ side release buckle. Since PALS webbing is oriented in the horizontal plane, you can’t use it to attach vertical buckles without adding vertical webbing to your platform. That is, until now. Down Range Gear has come up with a simple yet effective modification to the buckle using 1″ webbing to allow it to be woven through PALS and attached back on itself. This means no modification to your existing kit.

Established in 1917, ACW (American Cord and Webbing) is a custom design manufacturer of plastic and metal fasteners as well as elastic and non-elastic narrow textile webbing and cord products. In addition to expanding their custom design and manufacturing facilities to bring all of these efforts under one roof, they have also added two key team members, Wendy Horowitz and Stephan Yardan who will support their custom design product development effort.

Mark Krauss, ACW president, commented, “Providing customers with product solutions that help them meet industry challenges means formulating a highly skilled team that understand business trends, can anticipate customer’s needs and deliver innovative products. Wendy and Steve complement our custom design, problem-solving approach in the best possible way.”

ACW had this to say about Ms Horowitz and Mr Yardan:

A textile engineer and business development specialist, she has helped ACW enter highly technical, performance driven markets. Her clear understanding of customers’ needs, along with her creativity, has led to the developments of several new product lines. Journal Bandolier

April 9th, 2011

If you use a journal to take notes then you probably run into the same problem that we do; what to do with your pens. And, if you’re like us, you probably have a whole collection of pens. So what do you do with your pens? The maker of the Journal Bandolier had exactly the same problem.

Here is a concise description from the website.

This style of Bandolier is handmade using reclaimed rubber and elastic. The strap is 2 inches wide and sewn into a loop which measures 5.75 inches long when laid flat. It fits easily around books that run a little over 5 inches wide such as the Moleskine 5.52×8.25 inch journal or the Handbook journal of a similar size. Each loop is approximately 1 inch wide. There are a total of 7 loops.

Notice how the maker spells Bandolier. That lets you know that it will only be available on Etsy. Unfortunately, the only cool color is Black, but that’s ok, because so are our Moleskines. Product may vary slightly from the photo as they are all handmade and custom sizes are also available.

Joseph Marak Found Guilty in Bribery Trial

April 9th, 2011

After a week long trial, former Army acquisition official Joseph Marak was found guilty today in US District Court in Greenville, North Carolina of 35 counts including one count of extortion and 17 counts each of bribery and receiving a gratuity from a company doing business with a government entity while being an official with said entity. The offenses occurred while Marak oversaw the CASEVAC program that provided medical equipment to the US Army Special Operations Command, headquartered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The charges stemmed from an investigation that was prompted by a lawsuit between S.O.Tech and Skedco concerning alleged violations of Intellectual Property rights. Certain facts were released during this lawsuit that led the Government to pursue an investigation. Right now, we do not know the official status of the law suit.

When asked about their involvement in the case, S.O.Tech’s attorney provided us with this statement.

“James Cragg, the owner of So-Tech, testified as a prosecution witness in the criminal trial of Joseph Marak for bribery and extortion. Cragg testified that Marak, while employed by the federal government, had pressured him to promise Marak a job with So-Tech after Marak left the government, which Cragg refused to do. Cragg also testified that Marak began asking for “royalties” for contracts that had been awarded to So-Tech, a request Cragg also refused. Cragg said that Marak forced him to transfer So-Tech’s patent rights for a medic’s IV pack to its competitor Skedco as a condition for continuing to supply USASOC with other products. Cragg testified that the So-Tech lawsuit against Skedco and Marak in Oregon instigated the criminal investigation and prosecution of Marak in North Carolina by the federal authorities. Other industry witnesses testified for the prosecution as well. Today, the federal jury convicted Marak on all 35 counts of his indictment.”

Look for further details on this story soon.
