3M Subsidiary Wins Contracts for Two US Army Soldier Protection Programs

Friday, November 4th, 2016

This is major news. The Integrated Head Protection System component of PEO Soldier’s next generation Personal Protective Equipment program called Soldier Protection System, has been in source selection quite awhile. Gentex and Revision also competed for this program. Congratulations to 3M Ceradyne!

Company will deliver next-generation lightweight helmets and body armor inserts for the Soldier Protection System

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Nov. 1, 2016 – The U.S. Army has selected Ceradyne, Inc., a 3M company, as the awardee for two low-rate initial production (LRIP) contracts for next-generation helmet systems and hard body armor inserts as part of the Integrated Head Protection System (IHPS) and Vital Torso Protection (VTP) – Enhanced Small Arms Protective Inserts (ESAPI) components of the Soldier Protection System (SPS).

The Army designed the IHPS to give soldiers a lighter-weight ballistic helmet system that also provides passive hearing protection and increased blunt-impact performance. This helmet system includes numerous accessories, including a mandible, visor, night vision goggle attachment device, rails and modular ballistic applique. The contract awarded to Ceradyne is valued at over $7 million for the delivery of more than 5,300 IHPS helmet systems. Production is expected to start in 2017.

The VTP will equip soldiers with lighter-weight body armor inserts. The $36 million contract is for the production of more than 30,000 ESAPI, with production also expected to start in 2017. This VTP award is an addition to a previous $34 million award, for a total of $70 million on the VTP LRIP contract.

“We are honored to be the awardee of these prestigious contracts,” said Cheryl Ingstad, business manager, Advanced Ceramics Platform – Defense, 3M. “The SPS program represents the highest level of lightweight technology to date. Our focus from the onset has been to meet the Army’s stringent specifications for the SPS, and that will continue as we move into initial production. As a leading science company, 3M has deep expertise in advanced lightweight materials, which, combined with our proven production history, differentiates our defense offerings.”

The SPS will replace the Army’s current personal protective equipment (PPE) system. It is designed to defeat current threats while providing an overall weight reduction for soldiers compared to existing PPE. Both the IHPS and VTP began as research and development programs with multiple contenders.

Ceradyne has delivered more than 120,000 enhanced combat helmets (ECH) to the U.S. Army and Marine Corps since 2014. The ECH offers the highest protection level of any helmet in the U.S. Armed Forces inventory, even protecting against certain small arms threats. Ceradyne has also delivered more than 2 million hard body armor inserts to the U.S. Armed Forces to date.

Monday, March 28th, 2016

This is pretty big news. 3M has been teasing us with these helmets for quite awhile now. 3M owns both Ceradyne as well as Peltor and as you can see, integrated comms is already available.

3M’s new Ultra Light Weight (ULW) Ballistic & Bump Helmet is now available for purchase.

To meet the mission and protection needs today’s law enforcement face, ULW brings three levels of head protection that address the hazards our tactical response teams face – in regard to ballistic threats, ballistic fragmentation, and blunt force trauma. The helmet shell is manufactured in the United States using Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) composites with 3M’s proprietary Seamless Ballistic molding technology. At a 1.26 lb finished shell weight (size large), the ULW is one of the lightest helmets available in the market today (for its protection level).

ULW is tested in accordance to NIJ Standard 0106.00 for Ballistic Helmets to the following NIJ 0108.00 IIIA Ballistic Resistance
• 9mm FMJ – 124gr – 1400-1450 f/s – (Vo)
• .44 Magnum – 240gr – 1400-1450 f/s – (Vo)

ULW is tested for Ballistic Fragmentation resistance in accordance to STANAG 2920 and MIL-STD-662
• .22 Caliber – 17 gr f/s V-50 >670 m/s

ULW is supplied with the D3O® TRUST 10ft/sec Helmet Pad System. ULW, in combination with the D3O TRUST pads/configuration, has been tested and evaluated for blunt impact protection in accordance with DOT&E protocol for Enhanced Combat Helmet: GL-PD-09-04: >150 Gs force are transmitted to the head at the specified locations and under the specified environmental conditions. This result meets the performance criteria set forth in the standard.

Available in tactical “High-Cut” style and 3 color options (Black, Coyote Brown, Camo Green), the helmet comes standard with Night Vision Goggle (NVG) Shroud, Boltless Accessory Rail with removable Picatinny Adapter, and a Boltless X-Back retention system with cam-lock buckles. 3M, who is also the OEM of PELTOR Tactical Communication Headsets, has designed the helmet to be operate with the PELTOR COMTAC 3 – including the “ARC” Rail Attachment configuration.

READY NOW. The ULW is available for purchase. Product Demonstrations and Test/Evaluations can be accommodated per request. The helmet will be on display at the Texas Tactical Police Officers Association (TTPOA) SWAT Conference in San Marcos, Tx April 7 & 8, 2016.

As part of 3M’s continuous product improvements, 3M has approved D3O as a certified vendor for the supply of their TRUST 10ft/sec Helmet Pad System for immediate implementation into the 3M Combat Helmet Product Line for Law Enforcement (which was part of the MaxPro Armor line, acquired during the 3M acquisition of Ceradyne).

The 3M Combat Helmet, in combination with the D3O TRUST pads/configuration, has been tested and evaluated for blunt impact protection: in accordance w/ ECH Helmet Standard: GL-PD-09-04. The results show that less than 150 Gs Force are transmitted to the head at the specified locations and under the specified environmental conditions. This result meets the performance criteria set forth in the standard.

With this new performance, the 3M Combat Helmet sets itself apart from competition by providing an affordable helmet with 3 Levels of Protection: Blunt Impact (as stated above), Ballistic in accordance with NIJ Level IIIA (NIJ 0101.06) and Ballistic Fragmentation, tested in accordance w/ MIL-STD-662 and STANAG 2920. This make the 3M Combat Helmet a great choice a great choice for Law Enforcement Agencies looking for a Helmet to fulfill a multi-purpose role from active shooter to riot/crowd control.

In support of our “system approach” to our Helmet/Hearing protection solution, 3M has completed Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) testing for the 3M COMBAT Helmet w/ the 3M PELTOR COMTAC ARC Configuration headset. In accordance with ANSI S3.19-1974, the system has an NRR of 22db. This testing (in correlation with product testing to ANSI S12.42-2010) demonstrates that the headset and helmet – as a system – is a rated hearing protector that protects an operator from hazardous sounds associated with weapons fire.

AUSA – 3M Introduces Production Rails

Monday, October 13th, 2014

Shown here on the Ballistic Bump Helmet (which meets SOCOM helmet performance) the new Rail fits their boltless helmets. While it is a bolt less design, it doesn’t connect to the helmet via an epoxy like other designs. Instead, 3M embeds a threaded interface just below the durable surface of the helmet above the ballistic later. This threaded interface accepts two screws that keep the rail in place but do not compromise the ballistic integrity of the helmet.

It features a T-slot interface that accepts Picatinny rails via their Quick Release adapter. It also accepts side and mandible armor, oxygen masks and a counterweight for NVGs. The 3M family of helmets offers four levels of protection which we covered during SHOT Show.

AUSA – 3M/Ceradyne

Friday, October 25th, 2013

Late last year 3M purchased armor producer Ceradyne. At this year’s AUSA Annual Meeting & Expo Ceradyne displayed their wares in the 3M booth. This new helmet, the 3M “Defender” Ultra Light Weight Ballistic Bump Helmet caught my eye but I was not allowed to photograph it. However, they did hand me a brochure. It leverages the technology they developed for the USMC’s Enhanced Combat Helmet program. I though I’d share the brochure with you. Hopefully, we’ll be able to share more at SHOT Show.
