5.11 Tactical’s Gun Camo Cap

Sunday, October 26th, 2014

Gun Camo Cap

According to Tactical Fanboy, 5.11 Tactical came up with their own ‘gun camo’, which is a camouflage-inspired design that uses the silhouettes of more than a few popular and/or iconic firearms. This cap in particular, which features the pattern, is made from polyester fabric with a dobby mesh six panel design, adjustable fit, and integrated sweatband.

The 5.11 Gun Camo Cap seems to be the only product currently available on the official 5.11 Tactical website that uses the Gun Camo, however they’ve also done a line of beanies, also available in Brown and Grey, that are available from numerous online retailers.

This Pack Found At Walmart Looks Very Familiar

Wednesday, October 1st, 2014

We received a message Friday about a new line of tactical at gear at Walmart. The SOG line appears to be from SOG Specialty Knives & Tools but they aren’t available through their website, only through Walmart. Although there are numerous clones in the line, we decided to concentrate on the SOG Squadron Pack which bears a striking resemblance to the 5.11 Tactical Rush 24 backpack.

SOG Squadron Pack

Essentially, both are about the same size and serve the same purpose as backpacks but we don’t believe that the 5.11 Tactical product is patented. Instead, we see something amiss that is going to start showing up a lot; Trade Dress. For those unfamiliar with the term, it’s a form of intellectual property. Trade dress is a legal term of art that generally refers to characteristics of the visual appearance of a product or its packaging that signify the source of the product to consumers.

Pack Comparison

As you can see, aside from the overall look of the packs, there are several features in particular that are the same. What remains to be seen is if 5.11 Tactical has noticed (we are pretty sure they will after this story) and what, if anything they might do about it.

Unveiled in the company’s Fall/Winter 2014 catalog, the new products offer a head-to-toe outerwear solution for enhanced performance during a variety of duty- and adventure-driven activities. Consistent with 5.11 Tactical’s approach to innovation and product development, operator input and feedback was incorporated into the design and testing process behind each new piece.

“We engineered the Fall/Winter 2014 collection with every mission in mind,” said David Hagler, vice president of merchandising at 5.11 Tactical. “Innovation, tactical features, quality materials and long-lasting durability have always been at the foundation of our product lines and a necessity to the world’s duty-driven professionals. Our newest line stays true to this foundation, while also addressing the growing trend and increased demand for tactical products that meet the day-to-day needs of those in- and out of uniform.”
