OR – Arc’teryx

Friday, January 8th, 2016

There are three big technology stories for 2016 Winter Market from Arc’teryx.

First up is the Procline SV Boot which is a combination climbing/ski boot. We mentioned this new design when it was first unveiled last month.

Next is the Voltair Avalanche AirBag. This thing is amazing. They’ve introduced a couple of new technologies to make it happen. First off, unlike other Avalanche bags, there’s no one time use CO2 cartridges. They’ve developed a centrifugal blower system run by a battery that rams air into the 150 liter bag for rapid inflation allowing the wearer to float atop the avalanche. Additionally, the battery is optimized for cold weather use. It offers 10 inflations at -10 deg C and at least once at -30 deg C. This means you can train with the system prior to every needing it. Finally, the bag itself is very nice and made from the Arc’teryx AC2 fabric.

The final new item is an update to the Alpha SV jacket. First introduced in 1998, this jacket has received multiple material and construction updates over the years yet kept its core looks.

First off is a move to a new, lighter 8 oz N100p-X GORE-TEX fabric. You’ll also notice that there are no more zipper garages. This is thanks to the new WaterTight zipper and RS zipper slider which self seals at the top of the zipper.

They’ve also swapped one of the welded internal chest pockets for a mesh pocket fit for a water bottle.

This change is really cool. The hood and hem adjustments have changed from barrel locks to the new Cohaesive cord adjustments which can be adjusted by a squeeze of the thumb and forefinger.

Sneak Peek – Arc’teryx Procline Ski Alpinism Boots

Tuesday, December 8th, 2015

At Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in August I heard rumors of an upcoming Ski March Boot from the commercial side of Arc’teryx. The result is the new Procline unveiled this week in Vancouver to members of the ski press.

It may be of some interest to military customers simply due to the Bird’s reputation. The boot is intended for use not only skiing but also walking on rock and ice. For instance, the toe is designed specifically for use with crampons.  Additionally, you can “unlock” the cuff , allowing for walking.

Offered in European sizing in several models for both Men and Women:
Procline Carbon Lite – 1190 gr, size 27.5
Procline Carbon Support – 1260 gr, size 27.5 (Exact same shell, liner with more ski performance)
Procline Men’s Lite – 1190 gr, size 27.5 (Carbon infused cuff plastic, no carbonfiber cuff)
Procline Men’s Support – 1260 gr, size 27.5 (Infused cuff, liner with more ski performance)

Procline Women Lite – 1060 gr, size 25.5 (Carbon infused cuff plastic, no fiber, sizes from 23 to 27.5, exact same shell as “Men’s” with a liner shaped for differences in women’s leg shapes)
Procline Women Support – 1120 gr size 25.5 (Same as above with ski support liner)

Look for additional imformation during Outdoor Retailer Winter Market in just a few weeks.

Arc’teryx- London

Tuesday, September 15th, 2015

Earlier this month, Arc’teryx opened its first European brand store in the heart of London. I was fortunate enough to visit the store yesterday and several friends asked me to take photos.

I’ve visited the brand stores in Seattle as well as Washington, DC and this is the largest of the three, with two floors.

Shoppers are greeted with a daily update of weather conditions at several mountain destinations.

Upstairs is Women’s Wear.

IMG_0828.JPG

In addition to multiple mannequin displays of the clothing and gear, Arc’teryx wants its customers to participate and there are several ways to do that.

IMG_0837.JPG

I am most impressed by Arc’teryx’s effort to incorporate the brand story into the store. First and foremost is pride in their relationship with W.L. Gore & Co.

IMG_0831.JPG

This includes interactive displays on the materials they use.

IMG_0832.JPG

Arc’teryx takes pride in their color offerings and there are some hands on displays to help you see what they are all about.

The store is well staffed and they are both friendly and knowledgeable.

You walk down a large, open staircase to reach the lower level. This massive, floor-to-ceiling display is at the foot of the stairs and showcases some amazing artifacts.

Having visited the factory in Vancouver several years ago I can tell you that in the past, several of these custom jigs and molds were trade secrets, closely held by the company. They give you a real behind-the-scenes look at the ingenuity of their designers.

There is even a Veilance section as well as footwear (not pictured).

All-in-all, the London Arc’teryx store is a great experience and I highly recommend you visit, if you’re in town.

Arc’teryx Expands Footwear Line in 2016

Friday, August 7th, 2015

Arc’teryx debuted a groundbreaking footwear line in summer 2014 and just released it for sale a few months ago but a major focus of this summer’s OR booth is the expansion of their offerings for Spring 16.

Acrux AR

IMG_6471.JPG

This is Arc’teryx Footwear Product Line Manager Federico Sbrissa with the Acrux AR, the boot that started the whole process several years ago. Although this double mountaineering boot concept actually came first, Arc’teryx introduced low-cut approach shoes (Alpha2 FL) and mid-cut Hiking and Light Trekking boots (Bora Mid) first, while the more challenging design matured. It’s ready now and will be available not long after the new year.

As you can see, the new Acrux AR is fully crampon compatible. Although similar in construction to the Bora, in that the liner booty is removable, the Acrux AR incorporates an integral gaiter design with a waterproof T Zip which makes uo the outer portion of the boot.

This double boot also has a PE preformed inner shell which laces tightly over the removable Gore-Tex booty and offers adaptive fit. The Vibram mountaineering outsole is part of a six component sole system which also includes carbon fiber, EVA midsole and TPU heel and toe cups.

One product that consumers have been clamoring for is a leather version of the Bora Mid and as you can see, Arc’teryx did not disappoint.

Leather Bora Mid

IMG_6475.JPG

In addition to expanded color options for the existing Alpha2 FL and Bora Mid, Arc’teryx announced the Acrux SL and Arakys shoe models, in both men’s and women’s versions. The Acrux SL’s approach shoe design won’t incorporate Gore-Tex and is very light at 300 grams per shoe.

Arakys

IMG_6468.JPG

The Arakys has an interesting aesthetic and is billed as an ultralight bouldering and single pitch shoe. The heel of the upper is collapsible so that you can shove your foot right into it for causal use and the closure system can be used one-handed. Finally, it has a leather footbed for barefoot comfort.

OR – Arc’teryx Atom SL

Thursday, August 6th, 2015

The Atom jacket has long been one of Arc’s most popular designs but it just too warm for late spring through early fall. Arc’teryx has answered this with the new Atom SL, coming Spring 16.

The Atom SL retains all of the styling of the heavier variants but uses less Coreloft insulation in order to work for those chilly summer nights in the desert or on a mountain. Additionally, it features a low profile uninsulated stormhood, low profile Torrent fleece side panels and the new No-Slip Zip which incorporates a “speed bump” every 14th tooth so that the zipper won’t open all the way to your chest with a simple tug.

The Atom SL will be offered in several colors but remeber, this isn’t a LEAF piece. The Grey seen here will work pretty well for most folks who want to use this on the job.
