Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

Saturday, January 24th, 2015

I just finished up the 2015 SHOT show in Las Vegas and it reminded me just how far we have come in the tactical firearms and gear industry since 9/11.

Many companies did not even exist in the tactical industry prior to 9/11 and the offerings were a fraction of what we have today.

In my line of work this is the best time ever – always try to keep this in mind when commenting on equipment and companies on SSD and elsewhere. Thanx to all those who have revolutionized the tactical industry – we all owe you tremendously for your efforts.

BCM Standard 16″ C8 SFW (Special Forces Weapon) Upper Receiver Group

Monday, January 12th, 2015

Created at the request of Larry Vickers by Bravo Company, the BCM Standard 16″ C8 SFW (Special Forces Weapon) Upper Receiver Group was inspired by the Colt Canada C8 upper receiver used by several NATO SOF units.

You’re getting BCM quality here but in the same configuration as the Diemaco/Colt Canada C8 SFW. Additionally, the URG includes a removable Simon Sleeve (on front of barrel) used to mount a variety of accessories fielded by these units. That’s something you aren’t going to find in an off-the-shelf build.

European SOF began to field the Diemaco/Colt Canada C8 slightly behind the USSOCOM adoption of the M4A1 in the 1990s. Throughout the war on terror, its use expanded. Currently, it is fielded to Canadian SOF, various British Special Operations units, Norwegian Special Operations, Dutch Military, and others.

Misinformation overload; I hate to sound like a broken record but once again I must say be careful what you read and take as gospel from the Internet. Every single day I read something posted as if it is gospel handed down by Moses himself and it is dead ass wrong in regards to firearms and their use. Attending a class by an established instructor like those listed by Alias will teach you more than you will learn in a year of researching on the Internet. Be careful and consider the source before you listen to a keyboard commando on the World Wide Web.

Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

Consider the source; be careful what you believe on the Internet in regards to firearms, their history and implementation. Although plenty of solid information exists on the web, a lot of wrong, misleading and potentially dangerous information and advice is spread around as if it were facts carved in stone. I literally see multiple examples of this every single day on the web.

My advice is consider the source and cross check. In addition your own verification, thru experience if possible, usually points you in the right direction.

Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

Saturday, November 8th, 2014

A classic American trait is we like to customize and modify our prized possessions. Everything from cars, bikes, guitars and of course guns. I would argue it is one of our strong points and goes hand in hand with our quest to make things ‘better’.

My only advice is to know why you are customizing your firearms specifically. If it’s to make it a better range ‘toy’, then that’s okay. Just understand that I see a lot of shooters who think they are customizing their self defense firearms to make them more useful for the assigned task, when in fact they are making them less usable. I see this in every class I teach.

Be careful and do your research before you modify a weapon that you stake your life on. The stakes are too high to do otherwise.

Larry Vickers Initial Impressions On The Aimpoint Micro T-2

Wednesday, October 29th, 2014

LAV T-2

On his Facebook page, Larry Vickers wrote a brief post on his initial impressions on the newly released Aimpoint Micro T-2 red dot sight:

Ok it’s here – Aimpoint Micro T-2

I expect to be able to shake it out very soon and give you my take after live fire – initial impressions are very positive;

1) clarity – looking thru it the view seems a bit more clear side to side with a T-1 but I personally never felt that was an issue before so not a huge advantage in my book

2) flip up lense covers are very nice ( they are see thru ) – on a T-1 I use the TangoDown IO cover and love them but the option to see thru is nice; thumbs up

3) protected top adjustment – no downside here in my book; just makes it more rugged. FYI it means you only have one ‘double pronged’ cap to adjust with on the optic – not two like on the T-1

4) extended battery life – what’s not to like about that ???

My call is if you own T-1’s or H-1’s you won’t be selling them to buy T-2’s but going forward the T-2 will be the preferred option depending of course on price and application

Kudos to Aimpoint for bringing another flavor of red dot sight to the market and in particular another variant of the Micro – my personal favorite and the RDS that redefined excellence in the marketplace.
