Honeywell Spectra Shield Material Helps Reduce Weight Of Ballistic Handheld Shields By As Much As 20 Percent

Wednesday, March 14th, 2018

Safariland’s breakthrough design is the first of its kind to install lens caps directly into ballistic shields, enabling lighter weight without sacrificing protection

MORRIS PLAINS, N.J., March 13, 2018 — Honeywell (NYSE: HON) announced today that Safariland Group is using Honeywell Spectra Shield® in a breakthrough new design that changes the way ballistic glass is installed in ballistic handheld shields. The resulting shields can be up to 20 percent lighter. Safariland is introducing the new design in its new X Series line of lightweight ballistic shields, sold under its PROTECH Tactical brand.

Handheld shields have a lens cap, also known as a viewing window, made from ballistic glass. It is typically installed into a frame that is then bolted into the shield. Using Spectra Shield, Safariland is able to integrate the lens cap directly into the rest of the shield. This streamlined design eliminates points of weakness that arise from the traditional bulky frame system such as drill holes and seam lines. The result is better ballistic integrity with as much as 20 percent less weight. Traditional ballistic handheld shields can weigh more than 20 pounds.

“When we challenged ourselves to design a lighter ballistic shield for our law enforcement customers, we knew we had to use Honeywell Spectra Shield because it was the most optimal material to help us meet our goals,” said Todd Mackler, Vice President, Armor, Safariland. “Our innovative X Series Lightweight Shields remove common structural weakness points without sacrificing ballistic protection, ensuring that we continue to protect our men and women in uniform while helping to lighten their load. We are excited to offer this latest result from our extensive collaboration with the Honeywell Spectra team.”

Safariland supplies protective equipment to law enforcement personnel in the U.S. and around the world. The PROTECH Tactical line of hard and soft armor products includes ballistic tactical vests, shields, armor plates, helmets and other accessories.

“Demand for Spectra Shield continues to grow as it consistently proves to be the best material for the world’s most advanced armor products,” said Sanjay Sharma, Vice President and General Manager, Packaging and Composites, at Honeywell. “Customers choose Spectra Shield for its unique, mission-critical benefits: best-in-class ballistic performance, while being lightweight, strong and comfortable. They know that our team is dedicated to providing application expertise and support to help them realize their designs, resulting in innovative products such as the new X Series Lightweight Shields.”

Pound for pound, Spectra is 15 times stronger than steel, yet light enough to float. It has up to 60 percent greater strength than alternate aramid fiber. Spectra fiber is made from ultra-high molecular-weight polyethylene using a patented gel-spinning process. It is used to create Spectra Shield, an advanced ballistic-resistant composite material. Honeywell’s Shield technology is a patented Honeywell process designed to optimize the ballistic performance characteristics of Spectra, as well as for aramid fiber in Gold Shield® materials.

Spectra Shield and Gold Shield products have been widely adopted and proven for the most advanced armor applications globally, from bullet-resistant vests, breast plates and helmets to combat vehicles and military aircraft – all of which require lightweight solutions and superior performance.

Honeywell maintains an active Spectra fiber and ballistic materials research program focused on continuous improvement and development of high-performance materials. For more information about Spectra fiber, visit www.honeywell-spectra.com.

    Tuesday, November 22nd, 2016

SAVANNAH, GA- November 16, 2016- Blue Force Gear®, announced today that it has reached an agreement with The Safariland Group to license Blue Force Gear’s ULTRAcomp® high-performance laminate as a part of Safariland’s ever growing opportunities to offer customers the best products in the industry, seen in Safariland Armor.

“The Safariland Group shares our passion for helping the good guys make it home safe,” said Ashley Burnsed, founder and CEO of Blue Force Gear. “We are extremely happy to work with them.”

Safariland Armor has begun incorporating ULTRAcomp® into its new line of V1 overt external carriers, which were introduced at the 2016 SHOT Show held in Las Vegas, NV. “ULTRAcomp is the best combination of strength, quality and comfort,” said Tim O’Brien, Category Director of Soft Armor. “It was an easy choice when Safariland was selecting the best material for our armor systems to pair it with ULTRAcomp.”

PROTECH Tactical Releases Fast Attack Vest Now with FirstSpear Closure System

    Wednesday, November 9th, 2016

Fast attack high-speed platform with cutting-edge closure system debuts for the first responder, patrol and tactical markets

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Safariland, a recognized leader in the armor industry, today announced the release of the PROTECH® Tactical Fast Attack Vest outfitted with the FirstSpear® Tubes™ Closure System for the first responder, law enforcement and tactical markets.

FirstSpear Tubes enhance the ease of donning and doffing the Fast Attack Vest with a quick up or down single-hand function. The easy motion for attaching or detaching the system leverages the user’s muscle memory, ideal for stressful or high-speed scenarios. FirstSpear Tubes ensure the cummerbund of the garment is always positioned in the same location, which is vital for proper ballistic overlap to mitigate the risk of misalignment and incorrect attachment.

“Our partnership with FirstSpear granted the opportunity to incorporate cutting-edge Tubes technology into some of our most trusted tactical platforms,” said Todd Mackler, vice president of Safariland Armor. “By redesigning high-speed platforms, such as the Fast Attack Vest, and offering the Tubes closure variant, we’re able to further accommodate the market demand for lightweight, high-performing, rapid-release closure systems.”

Following the release of the Shift 360™ with Tubes closure, the Fast Attack Vest with FirstSpear Tubes is the second of three tactical platforms to be introduced with the closure system configuration this fall. Capitalizing on the innovative integration of the most sought-after tactical platforms and closure system technologies currently available, the Fast Attack Vest with Tubes closure was developed under the continuing partnership between Safariland and FirstSpear, LLC.

This Fast Attack Vest typifies the purpose of high-speed platforms with design features chosen specifically for user comfort, maneuverability and custom configurations, including:
Advanced Webless System (AWS) load-bearing platform to reduce overall carrier weight by approximately 30 percent without sacrificing durability, plus optional equipment/pouch configurability.

Full ballistic panel array consisting of front, back, side and shoulder with a multitude of ballistic packages from the Safariland Armor product line, including the Hardwire® vest, the lightest Type II and Type IIIA body armor in the world from Hardwire, LLC.
Optional accessories such as ballistic collar, ballistic throat, structured upper arms, lower abdomen/spine protector, and groin protector for additional ballistic coverage.

Compatibility with hard armor plates for stand-alone or in-conjunction-with protection in 8” x 10” or 10” x 12” rectangle, shooters and swimmers cut and Medium SAPI.

The Fast Attack AWS FST is available in an a-la-carte ordering system for teams and individuals to configure their fighting system for their specific needs. Also offered is an array of ballistic and non-ballistic accessories, tactical pouches and identification patches. It is also available for ordering with Type II and Type IIIA ballistic packages as well as color options based on the AWS load-bearing material.

Currently offered in the Advanced Webless System, the Fast Attack Vest will soon be available with FirstSpear 6/12™ (6/12) load-bearing material. This state-of-the-art material eliminates excess yards of bulk nylon, snaps and polymer stiffener for an overall system weight reduction. Additionally, 6/12 load-bearing material provides increased fabric flexibility and a clean silhouette that aids in enhanced signature management and mobility.

A Traditional Modular Webbing (TMW) Fast Attack Vest model will be available in the near future, while another carrier is anticipated for a late November release to address needs of officers and first responders in the most demanding environments.

Lenseigne impresses the crowd once again with a new world record

ONTARIO, Calif. – After setting not one, but two, world records at the 2016 Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association (CMSA) National Championship in May, Team Bianchi’s Kenda Lenseigne added another record to her impressive repertoire at the CMSA World Championship in Amarillo, Texas last weekend. In a world record run, Lenseigne won the Cimarron Eliminator CMSA World Champion Cowgirl title.

As one of Cowboy Mounted Shooting’s most renowned competitors, Lenseigne holds numerous titles and records prior to this victory. She has won this event four times before on her champion horse, Justin, between the years of 2005 and 2014. However, this is Lenseigne’s first World Championship win on her mare, Sparky, since retiring Justin last year.

“This win is incredibly special to me,” said Lenseigne. “I knew I could trust in my equipment to perform perfectly, but it is a big feat to be the World Champion in a first year partnership between rider and horse.”

“We are thrilled to congratulate Kenda and Sparky,” said Scott Carnahan, vice president, Safariland and Bianchi. “We are so proud of their accomplishments together and we thank Kenda for continuing to be an incredible ambassador for our brand and the sport.”

Last year, Golob captured first place for her inaugural IPSC Ladies National Title, while this year the teammates switched positions, with Reese securing her first IPSC National win. Both Reese and Golob hope to continue to represent with outstanding performances at the 2017 IPSC World Shoot.

“I trained intensively for this match knowing it would be challenging with paper and steel at distances over 20 yards, moving targets, strong-hand and weak-hand shooting, even prone positions,” said Reese. “Trusting Safariland to keep my guns and gear securely in place is a crucial factor in preparation and competition.”

Also at IPSC, Leatham secured wins as the National and High Senior champion in the Classic Division, a repeat of titles won at the 2014 IPSC World Shoot. “Part of why I can hold my own is my superior equipment,” said Leatham. “I have the absolute best of everything. Best guns, best ammo and the best holster equipment. So even though I may move slower than the kids, my drawing and reloading isn’t! My Safariland equipment always keeps me in the fight.”

Competing back-to-back at the IPSC and IDPA Nationals, Vogel was the victor in both as Standard Champion at ISPC and Stock Service Pistol Division Champion, and High Overall Champion at IDPA – his tenth year successively winning his division. At ISPC, he placed above 47 contenders with a perfect score. At IDPA, Vogel scored 202.5, ultimately defeating 337 competitors. With these wins, Vogel secured a spot on the U.S. National Team and will compete at the 2017 World Shoot in France next year.

“Two states in two days for two national championships tested my endurance,” shared Vogel. “It was an honor to win both matches in the same weekend.”

Koenig continued Team Safariland’s winning streak at the 2016 NRA World Shooting Championship/Open Professional Division. His first time competing at the two-year-old match, he placed first ahead of 200 contenders. The match consisted of 12 stages, representing all shooting disciplines, where Koenig triumphed with a perfect score of 3,000 points.
“This is one of the most demanding matches of my career,” said Koenig. “It was challenging to practice for all 12 events and I look forward to improving next year. I hold a great deal of respect for the other shooting disciplines represented in this Championship.”
Reese utilized her Safariland ELS system, 5197 holster, and 771 magazine pouch, all carried in her 4555 Shooter’s Range Bag. Golob competed using the same ELS belt system and mag pouch with her 5198 Holster. Leatham used his Safariland his ELS Competition Rig with a 5199 holster and 771 and 773 magazine pouches. Vogel competed with his 032 ELS Competition Belt, 773 magazine pouch, and 5198 Holster. Koenig used a 4555 Shooter’s Range Bag and Dual Rifle Bag.

Team Safariland members are an integral part of the company’s product development process by regularly testing Safariland materials and products to ensure its equipment meets the rigorous demands of its users. This collaboration supports the best performance possible for law enforcement and military in the field and Team Safariland at competitions.
