A Randall for the 21st Century

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Most of use who grew up at any point between the end of World War II and the first Gulf War have a bit of a romantic notion of the steely eyed killer with a Randall #14 Attack knife strapped to his field gear. If you are like me, you have probably wanted a Randall knife but for whatever reason, you never got around to purchasing one. It might be because they are so expensive, or the long wait time, or that, while classic they are generally shiny knives made from carbon steel that require a lot of maintenance.

But now, all of those excuses have been answered. Vickers Tactical in conjunction with Schoening Tactical is offering three distinct Randall combat models; the #14 Attack, 315 Airman, and #18 Attack-Survival. Called the VST series, they doing an after market mod to the knives to update them a little. Let’s face it, while the Randall designs are iconic, they have remained static for decades.

The main thing with the VST series is that they are offering subdued finishes; specifically parkerized carbon steel blades or bead blasted stainless steel blades to both protect the metal and cut down on their high sheen. You CANNOT get a subdued finished knife directly from Randall.

There is another advantage. You will get your knife much sooner than ordering directly from Randall Knives. Randall is running a five year backlog on individual orders since the vast majority of their business is dealer direct. So, if you want to purchase a Randall knife right now you have to go out and search their various dealers and look for the model and options you are seeking. Then, you have to worry about price since these days, Randalls have unfortunately become more collector knives than carry knives for military and LE. I have seen used models going for more than these are being offered for and not the VN-era models either.

It is important to note that only 100 of each model will be available and are priced so that a service member can actually afford one. Remember, Randalls aren’t cheap but these prices are fantastic, especially considering the extras and delivery schedule.

Improved Slide Stop for Glocks

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

We got a sneak peek of an after market slide stop by Vickers Tactical for 9mm and .40 Glock pistols. Having recently completed all testing, it’s a go for production in the next few weeks. Manufactured by TangoDown, the shape and surface treatment are more positive than the OEM item for faster reloads. Additionally, it is sized for easily manipulation by all hand sizes. Finally, it doesn’t interfere with holsters.

Daniel Defense and Vickers Tactical Team Up to Produce Instructional Videos

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Larry Vickers recently invited SSD to C2 Shooting Center for a behind the scenes glimpse of production of his instructional training videos. Produced by Daniel Defense, filming was conducted by his very accomplished crew from Tactical Impact. Fourteen very lucky students were invited in for two days of free training from Larry Vickers. In exchange for the free training, they will be immortalized along with Larry on his multi-disc Blue Ray tactical carbine and handgun videos.

In fact, these should be available for order next week on Black Friday. Keep your eyes peeled for word on www.DanielDefense.com as well as www.VickersTactical.com. They are great for those students who can’t make it to a Vickers course, as a refresher for previous students, or as sheer entertainment for the enthusiast. Larry Vickers is a wealth of knowledge and spends ample time providing insight on why he uses the TTPs he does as well as a constant running history lesson.

Vickers Tactical Announces Regional Endorsed Instructors

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

If you have been following Vickers Tactical on Twitter, Larry has been hinting that a big announcement would be coming on September 15th. Well, the day is here and the announcement is in fact, pretty big. Larry Vickers has developed a new program whereby he has certified a small cadre of instructors to provide basic instruction in the Vickers Shooting Method. This is a good move that will help to ensure quality instruction for those that want to train with Larry in order to learn his techniques but are unable to attend his classes due to location or funds.

Below is the official press release which covers it well. Further details including an FAQ and the list of instructors can be found at VickersTactical.com.

I get requests on a weekly basis from new shooters that want to attend basic level pistol or carbine classes taught by me. Unfortunately due to my busy schedule including TV filming as well as teaching various classes locally and around the USA I rarely teach basic classes regardless of the location. This has created a dilemma as many of these potential students would love to attend my level 1 classes as well other specialty classes I offer but they have no means to do so. Until now.

After careful consideration I have decided to allow select prior students of mine to teach basic level pistol and carbine classes under the Vickers Shooting Method (VSM) banner. These students have demonstrated a firm grasp of the key marksmanship fundamentals and in fact all of them have attended multiple Vickers Tactical classes taught by me – at least 4 classes apiece. Many of them are teaching classes already on a local level but this new program is designed to get them exposure from my website and direct new or basic level shooters to them in order to get these students up to speed and ready to take a level 1 class from me. Initially only a handful of regionally endorsed instructors will be authorized to use the VSM logo in their basic classes but I expect the program to grow as time goes on and more qualified candidates become available. All of these individuals will adhere to the 3 basic principles that guide my unique marksmanship style;

Rule one; Know and adhere to the real world safety rules that govern professional firearms handling.

Rule two; Only accurate hits on target can decide the fight in your favor – therefore accuracy is King.

Rule three; You are accountable for every round you fire – squeeze the trigger as if your life depends on it because it does.

New shooters attending basic level classes with any of the regional instructors will come away with a firm grasp of these Vickers Shooting Method principles and be on track to apply them in the real world. This will set them up for success and be ready to take it to the next level when they attend a class taught by me.

Extended Mag Release for Glock

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Although this one has been around for a couple of years, it is still one of the best upgrades you can make to your Glock pistol. It is designed by Larry Vickers and manufactured by TangoDown as a replacement for the under-sized factory Glock magazine release.

Vickers Extended Mag Release

Two versions are available. The first fits 9mm/40/357SIG variants and there is a second version for the large frame .45/10mm. Easy to install and made of the same tough polymer as the factory part, the Vickers Tactical Extended Release allows those with average to small-size hands to more easily manipulate the magazine release without shifting their grip on the weapon. Additionally, this will not eject the magazine if the weapon is laid on its side.

Fits Glock models 17,19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 26, 27, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, and 35. The GMR-001 is mandatory if installing the Crimson Trace lasers, as they attach to the weapon backstrap and further move the strong hand to the rear, away from the release.

Vickers Tactical Gloves

Vicker Tactical Glove

About a year ago, the Larry Vickers signature glove line hit the market and made an instant splash but seemed to fall off just as quickly as it appeared. But the gloves didn’t go away, and during the lull have been in use by a variety of personnel. Some of the delay was due to the distributor, Backyard Outfitter cutting their ties with Woolrich and reforming as a new company; Elite Operator Tactical. EOTAC is back and ready to hit the market with an improved line of clothing and accessories for the armed professional.

Obviously, based on the name, the gloves were designed by Larry Vickers. Many of you probably already know LAV so he should need no introduction, but for those of you who don’t know Larry, he is a retired career Army Special Forces Soldier and noted firearms expert and tactical trainer. Check out his website at the link below to learn more about him.

A few things about these gloves really stick out. When LAV was designing the gloves he didn’t want to just be another version of the same old flight glove copies everyone else was making so he worked with a well known glove maker from the outdoor industry to incorporate the latest in hand wear technology. Naturally, they are fire retardant and utilize a 9 oz Nomex knit on the gauntlet as well as on the back of the fingers and hand. Additionally, they have an ergonomic design found in few tactical offerings. What is really great about these gloves is that in addition to standard sizes (XS-3XL), they also come in Cadet sizes for those with shorter fingers. Finally, they are available in both OD and Coyote.

Based on price point and features, you really need to check these out.
