Wilcox Lanyard/Norotos Universal Shroud Kitbash from GGT

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Grey Group Training has put out an excellent article explaining how to combine the new Wilcox Industries’ flush mount retractable NVG Lanyard with Norotos’ Universal Shroud. These new Wilcox lanyards are designed to flush mount on an Ops-Core VAS mount, but many troops are running Norotos mounts which do not have a lanyard. It seemed like a great combination to Grey Group, kind of like peanut and chocolate so they worked out how to mash them together.

ANVIS Arm from Wilcox Industries

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

Wilcox Industries displayed their new purpose built arm for the ANVIS family (AN/AVS-9(V) (F4949) and AN/PVS-23 (F5050) Aviator’s Night-Vision Imaging System) of night vision devices at Modern Day Marine. Previously, mounts designed for use with flight helmets have been adapted with varying degrees of success to bump and ballistic helmets. Now, there is an arm that fits the standard one-hole NVG mount found on many helmets.

Additionally, a battery compartment has been integrated into the design so that the battery box does not need to be attached to the back of the helmet. You can see it in the photo above located just below the adjustment lever. A single DL123 battery will provide up to 32 hours of operation. Elimination of the battery box decreases both cost and weight and eliminates the cable that usually runs along the side of the helmet and can catch when in confined spaces. Although, that same box can still be used for those that use it as a counterweight.

Unlike aviation use mounts and arms, the new Wilcox item is machined from Aluminum and while the NVG will pop out from its ball and detent as designed, it won’t do it accidentally. You have to depress both sides simultaneously to get it out.

Wilcox Vertical Assault Climbing Hooks

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

Manufactured from 5/8″ titanium rod, the line of Vertical Assault Climbing Hooks from Wilcox Industries is available in four styles. Two versions of the three prong hook are offered (120 deg and 154 deg). The double and single prong hooks are also available but are not used as often as they hang up on obstacles less but are more difficult to hook. At the bottom of the photo you can see the pole interface which connects with currently fielded boat poles.

SOCOM Procuring Wilcox HMRS

Sunday, April 4th, 2010

SOCOM has released a tender to purchase 1441, AN/PSH-6 “Helmet Mounted Recording Systems” despite its having an NSN. Type classified in 2008 as the Mission Helmet Recording System, it is a headborne video recording system designed and manufactured by Wilcox Industries.

No matter MHRS or HMRS, it works! The MICH-borne Video Camera from Wilcox

Designed to record what the wearer sees through his NVG monocle, it is a great way to record details of an operation from the Warrior perspective. Additionally, the system conforms with the helmet’s NVG ratchet strap. The solicitation as well as our earlier article are packed with technical data for those so inclined.

The Mk 7 Helmet, Up Close and Personal

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

US manufacturer Wilcox Industries had a brand new British AC900/600 helmet on display at AUSA. The AC900/600 has been designated as the Mk 7 for use as an interim measure while PECOC refines development of an entirely new suite of individual equipment for the British Tommie. You can see from the display the full advantage of the scalloped brim when used with Night Vision Systems. This was one of the driving reasons behind the interim adoption of modified variant of the AC900/600 helmet worn by UKSF on CT role. Wilcox had the helmet due to a recent development effort in support of the MoD. This also demonstrates Wilcox’s excellent capability to integrate seemingly disparate systems into a cohesive capability in rapid order.

Wilcox Industries MHRS Type Classified

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Wilcox Industries

Wilcox’s Mission Helmet Recording System (MHRS) has been type classified as the AN/PSH-6 (Portable Special Recording Device according to the Joint Electronics Type Designation System) and assigned NSN: 5836-01-565-0663. We previously wrote about the MHRS in July. Since then some incremental improvements have been made to the system and it has been type classified. Type classification is a boon to organizations that rely extensively on the federal stock system to order equipment as they can use an NSN which seriously streamlines procurements.

The camera module now mounts to Wilcox’s Dashboard Assembly, their new mounting plate. The Dashboard Assembly is the key to Wilcox’s modularity as it accepts the camera as well as NVGs and attaches to both one and three hole helmets.

Wilcox Industries Modular Fire Control System

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Wilcox Industries

With this sight, Wilcox has combined the simplicity of the leaf sight with a laser range finder and anti-cant device. Due to the flight characteristics of currently fielded 40MM rounds even small aiming errors are amplified into big misses. Additionally, environmental conditions such as barometric pressure and temperature as well as the inclination of the weapon system can have a significant impact on the range to target, and ultimately accuracy.

Wilcox Modular Fire Control System

The Wilcox Modular Fire Control System (FCS) is designed for use with the HK GLM (M320) as well as both the Colt M203 9” QD and 12” Barrels. The FCS Laser Gimbal automatically articulates the aiming laser to indicate the proper weapon elevation necessary to match the trajectory of 40mm grenade in flight to hit its intended target when the operator lases the target. After establishing the actual range to target, the ballistic computer takes real time data from built-in sensors and gives the shooter the additional capability of establishing a more accurately compensated range to target, designated as “Ballistic Range”, for a first round hit capability. The Ballistic Range Indicator blinks, indicating a good fix of the target. The grenadier can then verify by touching the remote pressure pad. Pressing a second time rotates the Laser Gimbal and articulates the Aiming Laser to the proper angle to engage the target. The grenadier then simply aligns the laser to the target and fires. A double tap cancels the process to start over. This complete operation can be accomplished in a couple of seconds.

Note the integral leaf sight designed by H&K with 50m graduated increments.

A mode selection knob found at the bottom right of the control panel allows the operator to select from eight possible modes of operation:
– IR Laser High with Range Finder
– IR Laser Low with Range Finder
– IR Laser Low Only
– IR Laser High Only
– Visible Laser and Range Finder
– Visible Laser Only
– Range Finder Only
– Off

The details are awesome. Even the objective lens of the FCS features an anti-reflective coating shrouded with Tenebraex honey comb for off angle flash protection. Naturally it mounts to any Mil-Std-1913 rails and is fastened via two thumb nuts. It weighs in under 20 oz and is waterproof to 1.5m. It is powered by a single CR123 but we do not have any date on battery life yet. The Modular Fire Control System comes standard in Black but may be special ordered in Tan.
