Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

Saturday, November 8th, 2014

A classic American trait is we like to customize and modify our prized possessions. Everything from cars, bikes, guitars and of course guns. I would argue it is one of our strong points and goes hand in hand with our quest to make things ‘better’.

My only advice is to know why you are customizing your firearms specifically. If it’s to make it a better range ‘toy’, then that’s okay. Just understand that I see a lot of shooters who think they are customizing their self defense firearms to make them more useful for the assigned task, when in fact they are making them less usable. I see this in every class I teach.

Be careful and do your research before you modify a weapon that you stake your life on. The stakes are too high to do otherwise.

Larry Vickers Initial Impressions On The Aimpoint Micro T-2

LAV T-2

On his Facebook page, Larry Vickers wrote a brief post on his initial impressions on the newly released Aimpoint Micro T-2 red dot sight:

Ok it’s here – Aimpoint Micro T-2

I expect to be able to shake it out very soon and give you my take after live fire – initial impressions are very positive;

1) clarity – looking thru it the view seems a bit more clear side to side with a T-1 but I personally never felt that was an issue before so not a huge advantage in my book

2) flip up lense covers are very nice ( they are see thru ) – on a T-1 I use the TangoDown IO cover and love them but the option to see thru is nice; thumbs up

3) protected top adjustment – no downside here in my book; just makes it more rugged. FYI it means you only have one ‘double pronged’ cap to adjust with on the optic – not two like on the T-1

4) extended battery life – what’s not to like about that ???

My call is if you own T-1′s or H-1′s you won’t be selling them to buy T-2′s but going forward the T-2 will be the preferred option depending of course on price and application

Kudos to Aimpoint for bringing another flavor of red dot sight to the market and in particular another variant of the Micro – my personal favorite and the RDS that redefined excellence in the marketplace.

Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

Saturday, October 11th, 2014

I was on the phone the other day with Mike Pannone, a fellow Alias Instructor and former Delta Force Operator like myself. When the topic of shooting fast came up, Mike nailed it: “If you can’t shoot slow and straight then you have no business trying to shoot fast and straight.” Spot on.

Everyone wants to outrun their headlights these days and spray rounds all over the range in ‘Tacticool Ballistic Masturbation’ drills – that is way off base and unless your goal is to burn a bunch of ammo, and it’s also a complete waste of time.

Slow down and work on mastering the fundamentals – it ain’t sexy but it works. Period.

Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

I get people asking me all the time why do I prefer BCM carbines over others I have used or been affiliated with in the past. The answer is simple; mindset. I have found that Paul Buffoni the owner and founder of BCM has the exact same mindset as I do- period. He gets the job done and makes sure that BCM products can be counted upon when you need them the most. There are numerous examples of Paul taking a financial loss when the easy way out would have been selling a substandard product vs. scraping it.

Two examples immediately come to mind – BCM’s first barrels were not to specification, Paul Buffoni discovered this after he had them independently tested, and he trashed them – thousands of dollars worth of barrels – vs selling them anyway. Despite the fact they would have sufficed for 99% of the market he refused to compromise. This put BCM behind the power curve financially for better part of a year and pushed back BCM barreled uppers for even longer.

In addition Paul Buffoni is very pro military and spent time in the Marine Corps which had a dramatic impact on his frame of mind thereafter. This is the core reason why he won’t cut corners and only put the BCM name on products that he would trust his life to – after all, if he wouldn’t count on it, why should you ?

That’s why I’m with BCM – mindset. Plain and simple.

Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

‘I was an early advocate of an ‘enhanced ‘ trigger in the M4 carbine but after seeing one double (fire two shots instead of one ) on a guy I became very wary of them. So with that in mind I was late to warm up to ‘enhanced’ triggers again for the AR platform. After using them again for a period of time I can recommend two brands by name ; Geisselle and Wilson Combat . The Geisselle has built a superb reputation within SOF and for good reason; they are excellent quality and are extremely durable.

I have also used the Wilson Combat TTU drop in unit with good results. Wilson Combat is famous for good customer service and quality assurance so between these two brands you can certainly find an AR trigger that meets your needs.’

Gunfighter Moment – Larry Vickers

Support the National Rifle Association – I can’t make it any plainer than that.

My trip to South Africa reminded me once again how fortunate we are to have not only the 2A but the means to defend it, meaning a strong NRA. Straight up, the NRA isn’t perfect and I would definitely do some things differently if I were in charge, but it is our number one instrument in fighting the anti gunners. I’m a Benefactor life member and have been for years – I urge you to support the NRA and encourage others to do the same.

Stand together or we will hang separately.

History has taught us that for certain.
