Off-Duty: This is REALLY Off-Duty

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Today’s article is interesting in that it is an indicator on how the war has influenced American culture. We began to see it a few years ago in fashion. The pallets changed to more earthy tones and the designs took on a militaristic feel. here is just another example of how the war has influenced American society.

Dog Tag Condoms. Yes, they are exactly what they sound like. The manufacturer, named oddly enough Dog Tag Condoms has come up with the spiffy idea of packaging condoms in a silenced pair of ID tags. They come in a variety of colors (sorry no Multicam) including the ever popular pink…don’t ask, well you know the rest.

Happy Airborne Day!

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Today (August 16) is National Airborne Day.

Unfortunately, we cannot let this day pass without remembering Don Lassen, WWII veteran with two combat jumps in the ETO. Don was publisher of the “Static Line”, a monthly airborne newspaper. He passed in the late evening hours of 7 August 2008. We will remember him. Rest In Peace.

The Presidential Proclamation for National Airborne Day

WASHINGTON, Aug. 9, 2001 – Sixty-one years ago, 48 brave volunteer members of the U.S. Army Parachute Test Platoon pioneered a new method of warfare. Their successful jump led to the creation of a mighty force of more than 100,000 paratroopers. Members of this force were assigned to the legendary 11th, 13th, 17th, 82d and 101st Airborne Divisions and numerous other units that fought in every theater during World War II.
The soldiers of the Parachute Test Platoon also forged a unique warrior spirit, a relentless passion for victory, and a reputation that still strikes fear in potential adversaries. Beginning with the first combat jump by the men of the 2d Battalion, 503d Parachute Infantry Regiment, over North Africa in November 1942, airborne and special operations soldiers have made a total of 93 combat jumps. Since World War II, paratroopers have continually distinguished themselves in battle, earning 69 Congressional Medals of Honor and hundreds of other awards for valor.

Today, as we celebrate the anniversary of the first official Army parachute jump, I join all Americans in recognizing these heroes. We salute our Nation’s sky troopers, both past and present, for their great service and personal sacrifice in the defense of freedom and liberty around the world.

Best wishes to all for a memorable observance.

Insect Shield – On and Off Duty Insect Treatment

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Insect Shield

The Editor brought home interesting literature from OR about the new Insect Shield treatment being applied to a variety of product lines. Word is that the developer of the Buzz Off TM line from Ex Officio struck out on his own and has licensed this technology to several companies. It works. Adventurers and explorers rely on Insect Shield garments to protect them from the onslaught of the insect world. Using a synthetic version of a natural repellent found in the Chrysanthemum, Insect Shield treatment lasts 70 washings.

Here is a list of companies who have signed up so far:
Ariat
Ex Officio
Horseware
L.L. Bean
Eagles Nest Outfitters
Tilley
Mad Dog Gear
Outdoor Research
Orvis
REI
Sloggers Garden Outfitters
Cintas

We are so excited about Insect Shield that we are going to make it a point to write about as many of the products as possible and will post the Insect Shield logo on every article.

For more info on Insect Shield check out their website.

Lowa Task Force Boots

Friday, August 15th, 2008

At Outdoor Retailer Lowa Boots revealed to me that they will be bringing the UK-only (up until now) Desert Elite boot to the US market. They have realized for some time that Soldiers are wearing the Desert Seeker in conditions that really call for a heavier boot so they have decided to introduce the Desert Elite here.

Lowa Desert Elite

There was also discussion of importing some of the styles from the MPS line including the Jungle Boot. We asked specifically about the Arctic GTX Mountaineering boot and were told that if there were a solid order for any of the line they would bring it in to the US. Unfortunately, the Biomex technology will not make its way to our shores as there have been issues with noise produced by the ankle supports.

For more information on the MPS range look here and for the entire Task Force line go here. Our favorite place to purchase Lowa boots is AFMO.

Gregory SPEAR – Made in USA but Sold in Japan

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Gregory SPEAR

Whodathunkit? Leave it to the guys at Gregory, the only company shaken loose when BAE purchased Armor Holdings to make some headway with what is essentially a repackaged military product. The Gregory SPEAR line is inspired by the same products that they offered to the military during the beginning of the SPEAR program. Its almost ironic. But after all, they did bring us the UM-21. Nothing screams SPEAR more than that. While everyone referred to the pack by its nickname, the Strapmaster 2000, in all fairness you can’t blame Gregory for the design. They built to spec and those packs are bomb-proof. The line has been around for about a year. The reason you haven’t seen it? Its only available in the far east market.

Gregory SPEAR

The entire line is made in the USA using American materials and its quality the Japanese are after. The new SPEAR line is made up of an assault backpack, helmet bag, shoulder-bag, waist-pack, duffle-bag, and several small pouches. Materials are 1000D Cordura in Foliage Green and MultiCam. The Black color is 1680D Ballistic.

To view the line you will need to visit Gregory’s Japanese web site but to actually purchase the line you will need to go to Japan. If you’d like to take a look at any of Gregory’s other products visit: Gregory Mountain Products.
