All Your Hits Are Belong to Us

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

At 13,986,790 hits in October, we enjoyed our best month ever. Considering just 18 months ago we brought in just 1.7 Million hits, SSD is doing very well at reaching out to the masses. We really appreciate our readers and we want to thank you for visiting, but please don’t forget that we publish at least once per day and sometimes up to six articles in a single day. So don’t forget to check in regularly and tell your friends to do the same.

That’s Tough

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

G4TV’s latest show, “That’s Tough” features countdowns of the top categories of “tough” people, places or things in the world. The half hour format covers 3 “tough” categories and counts down the top 3 of each using archival photos and footage, reenactments and limited interviews of subject matter experts. The format reminds of History Channel’s Gangland. G4TV only ordered 8 episodes making it a very short first season. Unfortunately, the commercials featuring Dude Manrod are more entertaining than the actual show. Look for it every Wednesday at 8:30PM, or don’t.

Wounded Wear Presents Hold ‘Em For Heroes

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

Wounded Wear was created by a severely wounded Navy SEAL who, while undergoing his own reconstruction and recovery recognized two key issues that were not addressed by other organizations. He struggled with his massive injuries to find clothing he could wear around the medical devices necessary for healing and he noticed that most people never assumed that his injuries were incurred on the battlefield fighting for our Freedom.

Wounded Wear provides custom complimentary clothing kits to wounded service members that bear the Wounded Wear logo and if necessary they modify clothing to be worn around prostheses or medical devices necessary for healing. They also do the same thing for military uniform for those still serving. These are both issues that have received little to no attention until now and really go a long way to helping our Wounded Warriors normalize their lives.

On 14 November, they are presenting the “Hold ‘Em For Heroes” Poker Run and Auction to raise money for this worthy cause. You don’t have to ride a bike to participate and the run kicks off at Clutch Bar and Grill in Virginia Beach at 0800 and ends up at Knuckleheads Roadhouse across town.

Camouflage Improvement Industry Day Announced

Friday, November 5th, 2010

We have mentioned the Army’s Camo program many times over the last year. The fielding of MultiCam (OCP) was not the end but rather a way station on the road to a more comprehensive signature management solution. As part of Phase IV, the Army will host an Industry Day on 9 December at the Army Research Lab in Adelphi, Maryland. Then, they will solicit industry for a family of camouflage patterns. These will be assessed and the Army hopes to choose a new camouflage solution by FY13.

The U.S. Army Product Manager, Soldier Clothing and Individual Equipment (PM-SCIE) and Natick Soldier Research Development and Engineering Center (NSRDEC) will be conducting a Camouflage Improvement industry day on 9 December 2010 (1000-1500, 0900 registration) at the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) in Adelphi, Maryland. The intent of this industry day is to allow the Army to open lines of communication as it relates to the sources sought that was released on 29 June 2010 (W911QYFAMILYOFCAMO), address areas of concern with current camouflage solutions, identify a path forward and timelines as they relate to potential camouflage changes, as well as clearly identify the process (i.e., testing, evaluation, etc.) that will be used in determining the solution that is in the best interest of the government.

The 29 June 2010 sources sought (W911QYFAMILYOFCAMO) was for a family of camouflage patterns. A family is considered to be of the same or similar geometry with coordinating color palettes to cross the global operating environments. Global operating environments are defined by a geographic classification system that subdivides the global landmasses into areas with similar environmental characteristics. Examples of these environments include but are not limited to: physiographic features such as arid and humid river plane, low and high relief mountains, plateau; land cover such as forest / full ground cover, shrub land / moderate ground cover, barren or sparse ground cover, cropland, snow and ice; and seasonal changes.

Interested organizations are asked to register prior to 24 November 2010. (See the actual solicitation for POC info.)

Subsequent to the close of this notice, the Government intends to solicit for and award multiple developmental contracts for the purposes of evaluating (via computer and field) a family of camouflage patterns. The developmental contracts will include a priced option for the Government to purchase the data rights to the family of camouflage patterns.

Powertraveller Portable Chargers

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Powertraveller is a European company that produces a full line of charging devices. While they aren’t a “tactical” company, you are going to find products that are perfect for use in the field whether on duty or just having fun. Each one of their chargers is intended for a slightly different application but can be used in conjunction with other powertraveller devices to increase versatility.

The powermonkey-eXplorer can power most cell phones (96 hours), iPods (40 hours) and other mp3/mp4 players (6 hours), PDAs (48 hours), as well as portable game devices (5 hours). Versatility is it’s middle name and can be recharged via its integral solar panel, AC, or USB. Additionally, it comes with multiple tips called monkey nuts to accommodate various devices as well as adapters for use in 150 countries.

The MiniGorilla is designed to be used with the latest netbooks, but can also charge an iPad when used with the gorilla-pad connector. It also has use with camcorders, e-readers, and even many cell phones. It can be charged via AC or with the separate solargorilla charger. Think of the solargorilla as a big brother to the powermonkey.

The powergorilla can charge any device up to 24 volts, but the real draw is the extra 2-5 hours of power that it can add to your laptop or Macbook as well as its ability to charge multiple devices. It can be charged via AC or with the separate solargorilla charger, and like the minigorilla requires the gorilla-pad connector to charge an iPad.

You can pick up the powertraveller products at Extreme Outfitters.

Black Ops Wrangler

Friday, November 5th, 2010

In a marketing first, Chrysler has announced the release of a vehicle with a video game promotional tie-in: the Jeep Wrangler Call of Duty: Black Ops edition. Available in two variants, the two door version is based on the Wrangler Rubicon model while the four door is based on the Wrangler Unlimited model. Both models feature a black exterior with Black Ops graphics on the roof and front quarter panels, 32 inch off-road tires in a high-gloss mineral gray, and tail lamp guards and a fuel-filler door from Mopar. The MSRP on the two door is $30,625 and the four door is $33,500. Since there’s finally a Jeep with tie-ins to a video game, perhaps someone will consider releasing a UNSC Warthog in the near future. The fans can only hope…
