ACW Expands with New Facility and Additional Hires

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

Established in 1917, ACW (American Cord and Webbing) is a custom design manufacturer of plastic and metal fasteners as well as elastic and non-elastic narrow textile webbing and cord products. In addition to expanding their custom design and manufacturing facilities to bring all of these efforts under one roof, they have also added two key team members, Wendy Horowitz and Stephan Yardan who will support their custom design product development effort.

Mark Krauss, ACW president, commented, “Providing customers with product solutions that help them meet industry challenges means formulating a highly skilled team that understand business trends, can anticipate customer’s needs and deliver innovative products. Wendy and Steve complement our custom design, problem-solving approach in the best possible way.”

ACW had this to say about Ms Horowitz and Mr Yardan:

Wendy Horowitz is an expert on specialty fibers for narrow fabric applications. A textile engineer and business development specialist, she has helped ACW enter highly technical, performance driven markets. Her clear understanding of customers’ needs, along with her creativity, has led to the developments of several new product lines. Wendy is also Chairperson of the Safety & Technical Products Division of IFAI.

ACW has had a long standing relationship with industrial designer Steve Yardan. Steve’s design and business understanding has helped ACW co-develop fresh concepts into product realities. As a result, this strategic alliance allows ACW to service customers with in-house, rapid product development followed by production for numerous markets including categories for military use.

Journal Bandolier

Saturday, April 9th, 2011

If you use a journal to take notes then you probably run into the same problem that we do; what to do with your pens. And, if you’re like us, you probably have a whole collection of pens. So what do you do with your pens? The maker of the Journal Bandolier had exactly the same problem.

Here is a concise description from the website.

This style of Bandolier is handmade using reclaimed rubber and elastic. The strap is 2 inches wide and sewn into a loop which measures 5.75 inches long when laid flat. It fits easily around books that run a little over 5 inches wide such as the Moleskine 5.52×8.25 inch journal or the Handbook journal of a similar size. Each loop is approximately 1 inch wide. There are a total of 7 loops.

Notice how the maker spells Bandolier. That lets you know that it will only be available on Etsy. Unfortunately, the only cool color is Black, but that’s ok, because so are our Moleskines. Product may vary slightly from the photo as they are all handmade and custom sizes are also available.

Joseph Marak Found Guilty in Bribery Trial

Saturday, April 9th, 2011

After a week long trial, former Army acquisition official Joseph Marak was found guilty today in US District Court in Greenville, North Carolina of 35 counts including one count of extortion and 17 counts each of bribery and receiving a gratuity from a company doing business with a government entity while being an official with said entity. The offenses occurred while Marak oversaw the CASEVAC program that provided medical equipment to the US Army Special Operations Command, headquartered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The charges stemmed from an investigation that was prompted by a lawsuit between S.O.Tech and Skedco concerning alleged violations of Intellectual Property rights. Certain facts were released during this lawsuit that led the Government to pursue an investigation. Right now, we do not know the official status of the law suit.

When asked about their involvement in the case, S.O.Tech’s attorney provided us with this statement.

James Cragg, the owner of So-Tech, testified as a prosecution witness in the criminal trial of Joseph Marak for bribery and extortion. Cragg testified that Marak, while employed by the federal government, had pressured him to promise Marak a job with So-Tech after Marak left the government, which Cragg refused to do. Cragg also testified that Marak began asking for “royalties” for contracts that had been awarded to So-Tech, a request Cragg also refused. Cragg said that Marak forced him to transfer So-Tech’s patent rights for a medic’s IV pack to its competitor Skedco as a condition for continuing to supply USASOC with other products. Cragg testified that the So-Tech lawsuit against Skedco and Marak in Oregon instigated the criminal investigation and prosecution of Marak in North Carolina by the federal authorities. Other industry witnesses testified for the prosecution as well. Today, the federal jury convicted Marak on all 35 counts of his indictment.

Look for further details on this story soon.

Breaking News – USMC to Buy New Pack

Friday, April 8th, 2011

The USMC has just released a presolicitation notice for a new pack system to replace the current ILBE. This will be a full and open competition with no set asides. The Marines have been looking for some time for a new pack and there have been quite a few rumblings in industry that it would be a government owned design rather than a competition for a completely new, commercially derived design. Expect it to resemble MOLLE more than ILBE. There is an odd bit in the presolicitation that sort of promises a chance to see a pack that sort of looks like the model they want. “Interested offerors are further advised that MARCORSYSCOM, PM ICE, may host a USMC Pack sample viewing during the week of 6 June 2011 (date is tentative) at a location still yet to be determined. This event will be strictly for the purpose of viewing a like-USMC Pack model – which is not an exact representation of the product detailed in subject solicitation.” It is perplexing that they know what the pack looks like that they want but that they don’t have any prototypes of it. This hardly engenders confidence in the process.

According to the solicitation, “The USMC Pack system is specifically intended to provide the Marine with a load carriage system that fully integrates with currently fielded body armor systems. The estimated maximum quantity is 245,721 USMC Pack systems in addition to associated sustainment components.”

Furthermore, the actual solicitation is expected to be released in the next 60 days and “The Government anticipates awarding Firm Fixed Price, Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (ID/IQ) contracts to no more than two (2) offerors that are each capable of producing at least 123,000 Pack systems within twelve (12) months of contract award. Each ID/IQ contract will cover a five (5) year ordering period. Evaluation factors will be set forth in the forthcoming solicitation. Potential offerors are advised that Evaluation will require offerors to submit a minimum of (2) product demonstration models for compliance to a USMC Pack system drawing package and product description (PD).

Interestingly, the Purchase Description also speaks of a “Family of Load Bearing Equipment (FILBE)” that will be available in the following patterns and colors:

Class 1 – Coyote Brown 498
Class 2 – Woodland MARPAT
Class 3 – Desert MARPAT
Class 4 – Snow MARPAT
Class 5 – OCP
Class 6 – Tan 499

Details of the pack’s design are still a mystery but we expect it to include the following features/components:

A) USMC Pack
a. Main Pack
(1) Frame
(2) Shoulder Harness Assembly
(3) Hip Belt
(4) Main Bag
b. Assault Pack
c. Assault Pouch
d. Sustainment Pouch (Qty. 2)
e. Hydration Pouch (Qty. 2)
f. Hydration Carrier
g. Hydration Bladder System
(1) Hydration Bladder
(2) Hydration Tube with cover
(3) Hydration Bite Valve with cover
h. Sternum Cinch
i. Sub-Belt (also known as “Girth Hip Belt”)
j. Repair Kit
k. Care and Use Manual

FILBE will also include the following components:

B) Chest Rig
a. USMC Chest Rig
C) USMC Equipment Pouches
D) USMC Holster
E) USMC Corpsman Assault Pack
F) Individual Water Purification System

Based on information we received from multiple sources we believe the frame to be the Down East 1606 frame first developed for the Army’s airborne community but as of yet still unfielded by that service. Additionally, the sternum cinch sounds mysteriously like the Mystery Ranch, Mystery Cinch. That’s because it is!, at least according to the Purchase Description although it adds that pesky “or equivalent”.

Camo Design Contest

Friday, April 8th, 2011

The Schtick

We feel we’ve waited long enough for the Army to release their Camouflage Improvement Effort solicitation so we thought we’d get things cooking with a little camo contest. The idea is this. You design a new, original camo pattern and send it to SSD (Don’t submit somebodyelse’s work). On 15 April we collect all of the patterns, and over the weekend, post them as a poll to allow you, the readers to vote on your favorite pattern. Every original pattern that is submitted will be posted in the poll. Submissions are due 15 April so this gives you one week to develop your pattern and submit it.

To the winner goes the spoils!

SSD sponsor, GSS has generously offered a $500 gift card to the winner. If that doesn’t motivate you to participate, we don’t know what will.

The rules are simple

1. You must own the pattern you submit, it just has to be a camo pattern, and can be for any environment but remember, the winner will be chosen by a vote of SSD readers (cool is king here)
2. You must submit it in .jpg format but we don’t care if you do it on the computer, draw it by hand, stencil it with krylon, or even finger paint it; Just make sure we get it in .jpg format
3. We just want the pattern by itself, not applied to something
4. Make it as big as you want to show your pattern. We aren’t printing it on fabric so it doesn’t matter how long the pattern is or if it repeats
5. The submission phase of the contest closes at 1200 GMT on 15 April, 2011
6. Submit your pattern to camo@soldiersystems.net
7. You must be 18 to enter
8. Void where prohibited
9. Neither Soldier Systems Daily or GSS are responsible for improper entries or entries that violate other’s IP, nor are they responsible for the outcome of the poll used to determine the winner
10. One entry per person

By entering you retain all rights to the design but you give rights to GSS and SSD to use the pattern for promotional purposes.

Hardcore Hardware Australia

Friday, April 8th, 2011

From a land down under comes Hardcore Hardware’s new Tomahawk. Crafted from coated D2 tool steel, the handle is wrapped in 550 cord and comes with a nylon MOLLE compatible sheath. This is brand new on the market and looks to be built with a severe dosage of arse-kickery involved.
