First Look at FirstSpear

Monday, June 20th, 2011

FirstSpear is poised to launch their new line soon and has released the Exigent Circumstances Pack as an exclusive to Triad Tactical until the formal launch 14 July.

Versatility is key with the ECP. It can be attached to a vest or worn in a stand-alone mode with one or two of the included shoulder straps. As you can see, the removable beavertail will accommodate a helmet or other equipment. Next comes a pocket that will hold the Avon M53 Series Protective Mask. It also has an elastic daisy chain sized to hold flash-bang and smoke grenades. The pocket closest to the wearer’s back will hold a 3 liter hydration reservoir or the included comfort pad.

Expect to see at least one more product to hit the streets with another vendor before the line’s formal launch. The ECP is available now for pre-order. It will be offered in Black, Ranger Green, Khaki, Coyote, and MultiCam.

Pre-order now to take advantage of a limited time 30% discount.

Main Stream Media Picks Up Army Camo Improvement Story

Monday, June 20th, 2011

CNN published a story on the Army’s quest for a new camo pattern. While I have never been overly impressed with main stream media coverage of our industry, this article is factual and offers an interesting insight. Since virtually everyone who reads SSD has more than a passing interest, it is kind of cool to find out what “Joe Six-pack” thinks about this. Since those folks are taxpayers it would probably be a good idea for the guys behind the Army’s latest camo conquest to go over and take a gander at the comments. They are quite enlightening. Generally, they run to the, “waste of taxpayer dollars” side of the equation. But, at this point, since industry has already submitted their proposals, if this thing dies on the vine, taxpayer money won’t be the only funds wasted.

Former Bushmaster Owner Launches Windham Weaponry

Monday, June 20th, 2011

With the move of the Bushmaster Firearms International LLC production line last December to Remington’s facility in Ilion, New York, the Bushmaster you know today exists in name only. When Remington moved the plant they also laid off all of the Bushmaster workers and hired new employees at the new location. Granted, you can argue the quality of Bushie guns but any institutional knowledge that the brand possessed was lost with that move.

Now, former Bushmaster owner Richard Dyke, along with some investors have launched Windham Weaponry. The new company is setting up shop in the old Bushmaster manufacturing facility in Windham, Maine and hired back about half of Bushmaster’s former employees. They will begin production in July with initial deliveries to commence in September. As Bushmaster specialized in AR style weapons, we anticipate that Windham will as well.

Ironically, the Bushmaster website still claims they are located in Windham, Maine. Not sure if that’s an indication of how little Freedom Group thinks of the brand or if they are purposefully misleading the public.

Implementing Instructions for ACU Changes

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Just prior to the Army’s 236th Birthday Bash they announced a couple of distinct changes to the ACU. Namely, the Patrol Cap is now the default headgear and that service/name tapes, rank and skill badges may now be sewn-on.

Happy Father’s Day

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Fellow fathers, today is as much about you as it is about your kids. If you can, do something with them. If you can’t, talk to them. No matter how old you are, or they are, they still need you. And, thank the dad in your life.

“Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.”
– Elizabeth Stone
