ARC’TERYX, the technical leader in outdoor performance apparel and equipment, is proud to announce it has expanded its collection of educational mountain-skills symposiums to include the new ARC’TERYX Backcountry Ski & Snowboard Academy, scheduled to be held February 9- 11, 2018 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Created to support mountain skills development, experience and self-sufficiency in the mountains, ARC’TERYX Academies aim to create a space where beginners and experts alike can gain valuable knowledge through professionally-guided clinics, educational seminars, and shared experiences in the ultimate alpine environment.

Hosted with the support of Exum Mountain Guides, the oldest guide service in North America, the upcoming ARC’TERYX Backcountry Academy will provide a weekend-long curriculum with specific focus on technical ski alpinism, efficient winter mobility, crevasse rescue/rope work, critical mountain skills and important backcountry safety for skiers and splitboarders.

“We’re really excited to add a new backcountry component to the growing ARC’TERYX Academy franchise. Backcountry skiing and snowboarding runs deep in our DNA and our commitment to it has played a large role in our design heritage.” said Justin Sweeny, North American Sports Marketing Manager. “We chose Jackson Hole and the Grand Teton Mountain Range for its steep technical terrain, deep snow, and its elevated skiing and snowboarding environment. Add to that our new partnership with Exum Mountain Guides and the choice became obvious to offer a weekend of backcountry clinics that will continue to drive our community as a collective group of skiers and riders to advance our mountain skills.”

The event expects to draw hundreds of backcountry skiers and splitboarders from across the globe to climb and ride legendary routes in Jackson Hole and Grand Teton National Park, while also providing attendees with extra-curricular activities to compliment the weekend.

“We’re thrilled to feature an incredibly strong lineup of backcountry ski and splitboard clinics, keynote speakers, live music, movie nights, photo contests, and even a mini trade fair for the inaugural ARC’TERYX Backcountry Academy,” Sweeny said. “Taking everything we’ve learned from producing the ARC’TERYX Alpine and Climbing Academies over the past decade, this is going to be an incredible experience with a great weekend of camaraderie, education and adventure in the Tetons.”

NAVAIR Approves Massif’s 2-Piece Flight Suit-Military

Friday, October 27th, 2017

Based on a recent compelling need from the fleet, NAVAIR pulled out all of the stops to quickly approve the Sage Green version of Massif’s 2-Piece Flight Suit-Military, for use within the US Navy and Marine Corps.

Manufactured from Burlington’s Sigma 4-Star fabric*, Massif developed a patented (U.S. Patent 9,015,864) attachment system which unites the two components together, allowing them to protect just like a flight coverall, leaving no exposed areas at the waist. This two-part system combines elastic loops found inside the Jacket with Velcro belt loops on the Pant which are passed through the loops.

In addition to using a great fabric, Massif worked with the user community to incorporate features across multiple branches and multiple platforms. There are lots of little details. For starters, it’s a good looking uniform, offering an athletic cut. They’ve also moved seams away from high wear areas at the shoulders, seat and down the front of the legs; areas that can irritate during a long crew day, particularly in hot environments.

There are different Velcro configurations for different user groups. All of the pocket zippers feature pull tabs and the left upper arm pocket incorporates a pen slot.

Another common feature for both jacket and pant are the mesh-lined pockets for heat mitigation. This also speeds up drying.

Finally, the lower legs feature longer donning and doffing zippers than I’ve seen on other suits.

MadDuoCo Releases Original Pipehitter Tee

Friday, October 27th, 2017

Chesty Puller, Douglas MacArthur, and George Patton all did it. So did Percy Fawcett and Albert Einstein (and Bill the Butcher and Gandalf).

They all smoked a pipe. They were all original pipehitters.

You should be too. Why? For several reasons, actually. For instance, you’re not just gonna look distinguished and badass (though you will, of course). You’ll live longer than all the girly-men who prefer e-cigs and cigarettes too.

Remember the Surgeon General’s report from 1964, the one that first really got people taking a hard look at cigarettes? Prob’ly not. Anyway. It said cigarettes were bad — but pipes, not so much!

“…cigar smoke has 4 times as much benz(a)pyrene as cigarette smoke, and pipe smoke ten times as much as cigarette smoke (p. 58). Yet, the Committee found pipe and cigar smoke to be pretty much innocent of causing lung cancer, and even concluded that pipe smokers live longer than non-smokers.”

That’s right. Smoke a pipe, you live longer.

That might be bullshit, in fact it probably is, but we don’t particularly care. We like pipesmoking.

And that’s why we released this t-shirt. They’re printed on Next Level tees, with several color options available (and more coming soon).

Get yours right here.

Ask SSD – “Is There A New SF Group?”

Thursday, October 26th, 2017

4AF92494-4B77-48C4-8111-8018A4CE999C

Earlier today, several readers sent us this photo of a Green Beret with a new flash. Naturally, they came with the question of whether there was a new Special Forces Group. Considering that in the US Army, the Green Beret is worn by Special Forces qualified personnel, it’s a good question.

Unfortunately, the answer isn’t good. The Army has stood up the 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade (SFAB), which has a mission to, “integrates with foreign partner forces, assists and advises local security operations to build partner security capacity and capability and achieve regional security in support of US National Interests.”

The 1st SFAB’s self-appointed nickname is “The Legion” and above you can see their patch, complete with tab. For some time, we’ve been hearing that they were going to wear an Olive Green Beret. Looks like it’s true as we understand this is their beret and flash.

It looks very similar to the Army’s Special Forces, which wears a darker, Rifle Green Beret. Additionally, their arrow-shaped Shoulder Sleeve Insignia is as iconic as their Beret. Considering the 5th SFG(A) has been named “The Legion” for decades, one must wonder if host nation forces won’t mistake members of the 1st SFAB and its future five sister Brigades for SF Soldiers.

UPDATE: Last night we heard that the 1st SFAB’s SSI tab has been changed from “Advise – Assist” to “Combat Advisor”. This image was posted to Instagram verifying that information.
