Federal’s New 224 Valkyrie Loads Stretch Long-Range Horizons

Wednesday, August 28th, 2019

ANOKA, Minnesota – August 22, 2019 – Federal proudly announces two new flat-shooting Premium 224 Valkyrie loads that deliver precision accuracy at long ranges. Shipments of these Federal Premium 224 Valkyrie cartridges have been delivered to dealers.

In 2018, Federal transformed the MSR 15 platform and broke all boundaries of ballistic performance by introducing the 224 Valkyrie cartridge. Now, it’s giving hunters and shooters new loads that stretch the cartridge’s capabilities even farther: 80.5-grain Gold Medal Berger Hybrid and 78-grain Barnes Triple-Shock X.

Like all 224 Valkyrie offerings, the new loads provide extremely flat trajectories and match accuracy at extreme ranges. They offer significantly less wind drift and drop than other loads in their class, as well as less than half the recoil of cartridges with comparable ballistics.

“The 224 Valkyrie cartridge’s dramatically improved trajectories over all other MSR 15 cartridges, including the 22 Nosler, 223 Rem. and 6.5 Grendel—with less recoil of larger cartridges offering comparable ballistics, such as the 6.5 Creedmoor,” said Federal Centerfire Product Director Mike Holm. “And with the full array of high-performance projectiles available, it’s poised to deliver on virtually every shooter’s needs. For those looking for something new, different and better from their AR-15 platform, the 224 Valkyrie is it.”

Twinsburg, Ohio (July 2019) – When 16 million Americans were called to serve America and over two million soldiers sent to the European or Pacific theaters during World War ll, the M1 Garand rifle was by their side. This legendary fighting platform still creates waves of nostalgia through our military veterans, military historians and firearms enthusiasts. The M1 Garand was as versatile as it was reliable, able to operate through the freezing temperatures during the Battle of the Bulge to the hot and humid Pacific Rim Islands, easy to use for a green recruit and accurate enough for a skilled sniper.

To this day, the M1 Garand continues to hold a place of honor in our collective American memories. Fans of the M1 Garand continue to participate in a number of online groups and associations from the Garand Collectors Association to the Civilian Marksmanship Program and their popular competitions including high power rifle, as-issued military rifle, vintage sniper rifle, and more.

The M1 Garand rifle was developed by John Cantius Garand while working on semi-auto rifle designs at Springfield Armory. After extensive Army testing, the Garand was adopted by the US Military. What made this the US Military’s sweetheart rifle was its simple design with a unique gas system, self-loading, accurate rapid-fire capability, and a rear peep sight that made for quick and easy acquisition of fast-moving targets. The M1 Garand was issued in the 30-06 caliber; the then military’s newest round that was a vast improvement on the former military issue 30-03. The 30-06 was a lighter weight spitzer style bullet capable of farther ranges and less felt recoil.

Steinel Ammunition’s 30-06 M1 Garand M2 Ball is a 150-grain FMJ suitable for all 30-06 chambered rifles but is especially optimized for those prized M1 Garand rifles still in operation in the field or on the range. Purchasing surplus ammunition can be risky to both the customer and the rifle and handloading special 30-06 to accommodate the age of these M1 granddaddies can take some time, tools and experience. It’s also common knowledge in the M1 Garand crowd that use of high-powered hunting loads can bend the operating rod rendering a beloved piece of history, unusable. At 2,780 FPS, Steinel’s 30-06 M1 Garand rounds ensure reliable feeding, performance, and accuracy without undue wear and tear on the family heirloom.

Steinel Ammunition’s 30-06 M1 Garand M2 Ball 150 gr FMJ ammo is loaded in new brass with a light roll crimp and comes 20 rounds in a reusable plastic case for $21.99. Order online.

Building on a successful fifteen-year relationship, Her Majesty’s Armed Forces awards a new framework contract with Rheinmetall in the field of infantry ammunition

Monday, July 8th, 2019

Building on a successful fifteen-year relationship, Her Majesty’s Armed Forces awards a new framework contract with Rheinmetall in the field of infantry ammunition.

On 6 June 2019, Rheinmetall AG and Defence Equipment and Support, the UK’s defence procurement agency, signed a new framework agreement to enable the repeat procurement of infantry ammunition. The framework agreement will represent the default source of supply for specific impact rounds, ammunitions and grenades in the next 5-7 years and has an estimated throughput of up to €100 million (£90m).

Rheinmetall continues to expand its role as a major supplier of ammunition. Only a few days ago, the Dutch armed forces also renewed a partnership agreement for the supply of ammunition with the Düsseldorf-based specialist for security and mobility technology, which runs through to the end of 2030.

The contract, which has now been renewed with the British procurement authorities, establishes Rheinmetall as the preferred supplier of 25 infantry ammunition products produced by four manufacturing locations in Germany and Switzerland. Simon Valencia, Sales Director Rheinmetall Weapon and Munitions UK commented “we are delighted to be able to renew our long standing supply agreement with the UK MoD and provide the British Armed Forces with high quality, reliable, products that have been proven both operationally and in training for the last fifteen years. This new contract provides the UK MoD with value for money and continued confidence in re-supply of assured munitions products. The UK MoD is a key strategic partner for Rheinmetall and this new contract supports Rheinmetall’s continued growth into the UK Defence Market”.

Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) is currently is the process of negotiating a portfolio of framework agreements with defence suppliers to enable repeat procurement of in-service munitions. The contract with Rheinmetall Defence is the first contract DE&S has agreed with the munitions industry on framework terms and marks a positive step change in the way UK MoD engages with industry.

US Army NGSW Submission 6.8 Sherwood by VK Integrated Systems and Bachstein Consulting

Wednesday, June 19th, 2019

The XR-68 is a new weapon system that has been submitted to the Army for the NGSW program by VK Integrated Systems of California and Bachstein Consulting LLC of New Hampshire. The system consists of an electronics suite combined with a rifle chambered for a new cartridge design, 6.8 Sherwood. Variants for both, the NGSW-R and NGSW-AR, have been submitted.

A standout unique feature of the XR-68 is the lower receiver designed to house electronics, route power and data in a secure and robust way. Similar to other VK Integrated Systems rifles, the XR-68 houses the SmarTak electronics system, an advanced weapons system design for real-time battlespace awareness. This will provide the warfighter’s enablers and sights with data that will enhance situational awareness. Parameters like number of shots, last service date, location and orientation will be made available in a way that allows for easy upgrades of software and electronics.

Rifle Design

The XR-68 is based on the DPMS308/SR-25 system used throughout the industry. The XR-68 is chambered for a new cartridge called 6.8 Sherwood. The barrel is the only part that is non-standard, similar in concept to a 300BLK in an AR-15. All other parts in the XR-68, such as the bolt, bolt carrier, fire control, etc., are DPMS308/SR-25 compatible parts. The XR-68 has an ambidextrous charging handle, safety selector and magazine catch.

Ammunition/Cartridge Design

Bachstein Consulting designed the 6.8 Sherwood to meet the level of performance required by the Army for the NGSW program. 6.8 Sherwood has more internal case volume than 7.62mm and other cartridges derived from 7.62mm, allowing for more performance potential. 6.8 Sherwood is compatible with 7.62mm bolts and bolt carriers, no special modifications are required.
