Kosovo Security Force Members Make History, Earn U.S. Air Assault Badge

JOHNSTON, Iowa– Two Kosovo Security Force members made history by becoming the first KSF soldiers to graduate from a U.S. Air Assault course Sept. 9, 2022, at Camp Dodge in Johnston, Iowa.

Maj. Gen. Ben Corell, the Adjutant General of Iowa National Guard, along with representatives from the Des Moines Consulate of the Republic of Kosovo and senior KSF leadership, were present to congratulate Pvt. Sead Berisha, a psychological operations soldier, and Staff Sgt. Lorik Ramaj, a civilian affairs soldier, on earning their U.S. Air Assault badges. Sead and Ramaj stood at attention alongside U.S. Soldiers and Airmen as their mentors and loved ones pinned them with their “wings” on graduation day.

On the first day of the course, Berisha described feeling strange being in a different uniform from the U.S. service members surrounding him, but said that his fellow students were approachable and encouraging.

“It’s my first time in the U.S. and in Iowa, and I feel really special to be here,” said Berisha.

Berisha and Ramaj represent their countrymen in their admirable achievement but also the flourishing National Guard State Partnership Program that joins Kosovo and Iowa in military-to-military engagements in support of defense security goals and cooperation objectives that also foster cultural exchange.

Over 290 service members converged at the post to earn the coveted Air Assault Badge, Pathfinder Badge or title of Rappel Master throughout August and September.

It was the first time in four years that Mobile Training Teams based out of the Army National Guard Warrior Training Center at Fort Benning, Georgia, traveled to Camp Dodge to teach the courses. The cadre led the Soldiers and Airmen through grueling tasks that were both physically and mentally challenging.

The U.S. Army Air Assault course trains service members across all branches in sling load operations and rappelling, as well as being a true test of grit. It includes phases that test not only their technical aptitude, but their ability to negotiate a tough obstacle course between repetitions of various exercises and — for those who pass all other tests — finishes with a timed 12-mile ruck march.

As for the Pathfinder course, a 2020 Army Times article stated the course would get the axe as projected at the time, but Sgt. 1st Class Josh Ludecke said that’s not the case. Ludecke is the primary Pathfinder instructor assigned to Company B, ARNG WTC.

“We’re still here for the Army National Guard, and our training center has absorbed executive agency of the Pathfinder school,” said Ludecke. “We’re doing things that we can to fit [the course] more toward the force we need.”

1st Lt. Tanner Potter is an Iowa National Guard Soldier currently serving on active duty orders as the executive officer of Company B, ARNG WTC. He explained the difference between the Army’s Pathfinder and Air Assault courses.

“Pathfinders are able to be off on their own establishing drop zones and can go in ahead of a unit,” said Potter. “It’s just extremely in-depth, almost like college-level classes. Air assault is much easier for younger Soldiers to understand, strictly focusing on tower rigging and rappelling, that sort of thing.”

Each course has overall objectives and knowledge that culminates with each skill level. Air Assault is meant to lay the foundation for Pathfinder as well as the Rappel Master course, which is currently being held at Camp Dodge.

Sgt. Briton Ensminger, a cavalry scout with Troop A, 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry Regiment, IANG, said the Pathfinder course involved “very, very rigorous studying.” Yet, the long hours of mental strain paid off when he earned his badge on graduation day alongside his twin brother, Sgt. Bergen Ensminger, and was pinned by the primary Air Assault instructor. The Ensminger brothers are from Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

“The non-commissioned officer-in-charge of Air Assault is an old squad leader of mine [from] when I deployed,” said Ensminger. “He got to pin on my torch for me, so that was pretty cool.”

The Rappel Master course at Camp Dodge, which also offers a valuable and specialized set of skills focusing on aircraft rigging and rappelling, is set to graduate approximately 27 service members Sept. 15. This will close out a significant joint training event that gives service members a chance to both stand out and stand together with others who’ve earned these skills and badges.

Federal Ammunition Awarded 5-Year, $114M U.S. Army Contract

ANOKA, Minnesota – September 14, 2022 – Federal Ammunition has been awarded a 5-year contract to produce the United States Army’s 5.56mm training ammunition valued at $114 million dollars.  AA40 5.56mm frangible ammunition is used by the U.S. military branches in rifles and carbines chambered for this caliber for training.

“This contract is historic,” said Jason Vanderbrink, President of Federal Ammunition.  “It is the largest government contract awarded to Federal in its 100-years of operation and speaks volumes to the trust the United States military has in our American workforce assembling the best products for our servicemen and servicewomen.”

Army Medical Materiel Development Activity Looks to Modernize Oxygen Delivery

FORT DETRICK, Md. — The U.S. Army Medical Materiel Development Activity’s Warfighter Deployed Medical Systems and the U.S. Army Medical Test and Evaluation Activity, or USAMTEAC, recently partnered at Fort Detrick to assess three commercially available medical-grade oxygen generating systems in early August.

Soldiers from Fort Bragg and Joint Base Lewis-McChord participated and received training on each system prior to the evaluation and testing. Once trained the Soldiers operated the products as if they were deployed.

During the testing process, standard-sized cylindrical oxygen tanks are vacuumed before being refilled to verify the flowrate. Next, the oxygen is tested for purity before the tanks are vacuumed and recycled through the process again.

“On the battlefield, patients who need oxygen would come to us,” said Staff Sgt. Lorrence Wilder of the 551st Medical Logistics Company at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. “For example, a field hospital may need purified oxygen and it would be our job to use one of these products to refill their oxygen supply.”

The Soldiers and the USAMTEAC personnel verify that the products meet the standards and perform as expected.

“This modernization is a two-year process,” said Austin Langdon, deputy product manager at Warfighter Deployed Medical Systems — Modernization. “In phase one, the teams gathered data and information, to develop a list of essential characteristics to describe the requirements products had to meet. That wasn’t done in a vacuum, we worked with the Future Field Integration Division, the Capability Development and Integration Directorate, and others to put the list of essential characteristics together.”

Each essential characteristic has a minimum level and a desired level that vendors must meet to be considered.

All three devices operate on pressure swing absorption systems, which take in ambient air and filter-out other gases until the oxygen reaches the desired purity level.

“We are conducting unbiased testing on one system at a time,” said Eitter Rodriguez, one of the USAMTEAC test officers. “Each system evaluated on its own merits. The tests are the same across the board. They are all different systems, but the requirements for each are the same.”

“Maintenance and sustainability are considered in addition to the test results,” said Langdon. “If two machines meet the requirements, but one requires significantly more costs to maintain, then that needs to be assessed as well.”

Evaluators say the goal is to make a selection, field and fully deliver a product to the field to take care of Warfighters. The Army Medical Logistics Command maintains and sustains the product throughout its lifespan.

“Our Medical Maintenance Operation divisions throughout the United States, Europe and Korea call us when there’s a maintenance issue,” said Leigh Anne Alexander, director of the Integrated Logistics Support Center under the Army Medical Logistics Command. “So, identifying test parameters early-on, ensures the system is doing what it is supposed to do, is really important.”

AGR Program Changes on the Horizon

ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. (AFNS) —  

In line with Lt. Gen. John Healy’s strategic priorities of “Ready Now!” and “Transforming for the Future,” Air Force Reserve Command is instituting changes to the Active Guard and Reserve program effective Oct. 1.

On that day, roughly 6,000 AGR positions will complete the transition to “term” and have initial tour determination and extension approval authority at the wing commander level. Career status will be granted at six cumulative years of service in the AGR program.

“The AGR program will continue to provide promotion, career progression, retention, education and professional development opportunities for Reserve Citizen Airmen,” said Healy, chief of the Air Force Reserve and commander of AFRC. “Taking care of our Airmen will remain our priority during the transition as commanders ensure they have the critical AGR positions filled to be combat ready to meet operational demands in the future.”

As always, the program may lead to Airmen earning an active-duty retirement after attaining the required years of total active federal military service.

Career AGRs who wish to remain in the AGR program will continue to adhere to existing guidance and will accept permanent change of station, permanent change of assignment, training, developmental education and force development opportunities in accordance with Air Force Manual 36-2114, section 6.6.

AGR term positions were successfully introduced in 2019, and provide more agility in recruiting, retaining and managing AGR talent. After three years of implementation and review, AFR leadership is instituting changes to the AGR program. The transformation is part of AFRC’s mission and compliance with Healy’s task order “to ensure units are mission ready and properly resourced.”

Wing commanders, or their equivalent, will have tour length determination and extension approval authority. In the past, initial term tours were fixed at three years, with an extension up to five years requiring Deputy Commander, Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC/CD) or Deputy to the Chief, Air Force Reserve (AF/RE-D) approval. Now, advertisements for initial tour lengths – two, three, four or five years – will be determined by wing commanders and above. Tour extensions may not exceed a total tour length of five years.

The second change will remove the AGR career status option from the AGR continuation decision process. AGR members will be granted career status after completion of six cumulative years in the AGR program, in accordance with Department of Defense Instruction 1205.18, section 6.6.

Over the next month, communication will be provided through virtual town hall meetings, Facebook Live events, email and MyPers messages, and updates to command social media sites regarding the AGR changes.

Arctic Warriors Round Out Capability Set 21 Fielding

JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska — All good things must come to an end. But when it comes to the Army’s capability sets, the end is only the beginning for the next iteration of advanced battlefield network technologies.

The 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 11th Airborne Division is the final unit to be fielded capability set, or CS, 21’s Integrated Tactical Network. The 2nd Brigade Combat Team joins multiple brigade combat teams across the globe to obtain Integrated Tactical Network — or ITN — capabilities, with CS21 paving the way for CS23 Stryker and CS25 Armor vehicle ITN capabilities.

In May of this year, the Army redesignated U.S. Army Alaska headquarters as the 11th Airborne Division. The two brigade combat teams in Alaska — the 1st Brigade Combat Team and the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division were redesignated as the 1st and 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 11th Airborne Division, respectively.

“Their focus will be on dismounted and Arctic mobility and capabilities of sustained operation in the Arctic [and] extreme cold weather,” said 11th Airborne Division Commander Maj. Gen. Brian Eifler.

ITN Capabilities

The Army’s CS21 ITN inserts commercial capabilities into the Army tactical network to provide a flexible, simplified network solution from battalion to dismounted Soldiers. Components include radios, variable height antennas, small satellite terminals and commercial phone technology.

“The ITN creates a resilient network that allows tactical commanders the ability to communicate with joint and coalition partners, provides a robust primary, alternate, contingency, and emergency plan for both line-of-sight and beyond line-of-sight, allows the battalion to operate independently of the brigade and provides situational awareness down to the platoon level,” said Jerry Harper, product manager for helicopter and multi-mission radios, under Project Manager Tactical Radios, Program Executive Office for Command, Control, Communications-Tactical.

New Equipment Fielding and Training

The CS21 ITN fielding to the 2/11th has consisted of both mounted and dismounted capabilities. From vehicle installs to classroom training, a hands-on approach has been critical to ensure Soldiers retain their ITN skills when they shift to an operational environment.

When completed this month, ITN technicians will have integrated manpack and leader radios into a combination of approximately 400 heavy, medium and light tactical vehicles.

“Hands-on training is just as critical in the classroom,” Harper said. “We have set a 75 percent hands-on training goal because we know that PowerPoint alone is not sufficient.”

Demonstrating this goal, the 2/11th classrooms have been piled high with equipment for training on the multiple ITN tactical radio variants and the Nett Warrior end-user device, which when integrated into the dismounted radios, provides real-time, map-based position information location and other relevant operational information.

“From the beginning of our mission, we have encouraged the unit to send Soldiers down to the motor pool to de-install legacy equipment and observe the new installs,” said Mark Rotarius, platform Integration team lead, under Project Manager Tactical Radios. “For many of these Soldiers, this is the first time they have seen the system, and they could feel overwhelmed if they don’t put their hands on the equipment.”

CS21 Fielding Across the Force

In some instances, 2/11th Soldiers who were formerly with CS21 ITN-fielded units, including the 82nd Airborne Division, Security Force Assistance Brigades and the 173rd Airborne Brigade, provided insight on the enhancements they had seen since first operating the capability.

“I first used the ITN while I was with the 173rd Airborne,” said Staff Sgt. Jacob Ryan Hall, communications section chief for the 1-40th Cavalry, under the 2/11th. “The capability is much easier to use now, and as a cavalry unit, I’m very much looking forward to implementing the TSM waveform, which will help us create the networks our scouts need to send information back to the commander.”

The TSM commercial mesh waveform is the primary waveform used with the ITN. It requires line-of-sight and provides a multi-node relay, where every radio is a repeater for all network traffic.

The Security Force Assistance Brigades were the earliest adopters of CS21’s ITN and helped launch what is now a regular battle rhythm of fielding, training, operational exercises, and feedback to ensure frequent, iterative and modern capability improvements.

“As a former [Security Force Assistance Brigade], it’s been good to see the junior enlisted NCOs operate the radios very rapidly by the end of the course,” said Cpt. Michael McCarty, the 2/11th airborne chief of operations, responsible for the current operations and synchronization across the entire brigade. “By the end of the course, they were sending each other pictures, drawing operations graphics and sending messages to each other.”

The 82nd Airborne has been pivotal in providing feedback on the ITN capability over the past two years. In addition to using the ITN for real-time position information following jumps into the drop zone, the 82nd ITN with Nett Warrior device has also aided medics in managing Soldiers’ critical battlefield medical needs.

“I was a platoon medic with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division where I first received training on the ITN equipment,” said Sgt. Elisha Eagleroad, treatment squad leader under the 2/11th, who oversees the aid station for treating patients throughout battalion.

The medics would use ITN and Nett Warrior end user device to drop location pins for casualty collection points, he said.

“It was a lot quicker to be able to get that 10-digit grid right off the phone and describe terrain and what routes or fire breaks to take,” Eagleroad said. “We were able to expedite patient evacuation because we had a more accurate description of where we were going.”

Preparing for Operations

Following the ITN training at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson, the unit will be participating in multiple exercises, including one in India for the bilateral Yudh Abhyas exercise, where they will test two of the ITN radio variants.

From there, the unit will participate in other platoon and company live fires events at their home station, where they will put the ITN kit through the paces in extreme cold weather environment. Leadership and technical support personnel are proactively identifying risks to operating technology under extreme environmental issues and putting mitigation plans into place.

“We train in negative 30-degree weather, which will provide a critical test for the ITN equipment,” said Chief Warrant Officer 4 Louis Mundinger. “Our plan is to wrap some of the radio batteries and make adjustments as needed with packaging.”

In March, the unit will participate in the annual Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center exercise in Fairbanks, which deploys coalition forces in a realistic and relevant arctic environment to help meet current and future regional crises and security needs.

Next Steps in Capability Set Fielding

As CS21’s ITN fielding comes to a close, the Army is fielding CS23’s ITN to the 2nd Cavalry Regiment Stryker unit in Germany and to the 101st Airborne Division, which is the first division-level ITN fielding. On its heels is CS25, which is currently under test and evaluation.

The strength of CS21’s ITN fielded across seven brigade combat teams has drastically enhanced brigade and below network communications, with each Soldier being the touchpoint to deploy, fight and win using these advanced technologies.

“Our young Soldiers are open to learning new technologies,” Mundinger said. “They are excited to use the new equipment, and do not want to fall back on the legacy equipment. They are ready to go.”

StreamCaster Radios Selected for Stryker Brigade Combat Teams in Capability Set 23

Los Angeles, California (September 7, 2022) – Silvus Technologies, Inc. (“Silvus”) today announced the award of a $2.4 million order from the U.S. Army to provide StreamCaster mobile ad hoc network (MANET) radios for deployment at scale in the Army’s Integrated Tactical Network. As part of the Army’s Capability Set 23 (CS23), StreamCaster radios were selected for their ability to connect Stryker brigade combat team (SBCTs) command posts, creating a self-organizing mesh network designed to operate in multiple spectrum bands at high data rates, with advanced interference avoidance and cancellation waveform capabilities. The order comes just weeks after Silvus StreamCaster radios and version 4.0.2.8 of StreamScape firmware achieved Authority to Operate (ATO) certification from the U.S. Army.

For CS23, StreamCaster radios (Joint Electronics Type Designation: AN/PRC-169) will be deployed to Stryker BCTs, providing continuity of operations for mounted and dismounted formations that will extend the distance and range of these units, thereby increasing mobility for maneuver. Previously selected for CS21 to connect key command posts at the brigade and battalion echelons, StreamCaster radios enable transmission of federated TAK data with up to 8W of output power, high data rates and dual frequency band support. DEVCOM SC’s Army Tactical Bras Designed to Meet the Performance Needs of Female Soldiers

NATICK, Mass. — The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center, or DEVCOM SC, has designed Army Tactical Bras (including four concept bras) to meet the needs of female Soldiers who perform physically demanding tasks in a wide variety of environments.

“It’s important to recognize that Soldiers are the ultimate athletes, and they need something very specific,” said Annette LaFleur, team leader for the Design, Pattern & Prototype Team, part of the Soldier Protection Directorate at DEVCOM SC.

LaFleur explained that as ultimate athletes female Soldiers often endure arduous physical conditions that are much more intense than “say a female running a weekend road race or playing in a soccer game for a few hours.”

“Consider a design that may be worn days on end, in the cold, jungle or desert, layered under her uniform, body armor, ruck sack and while different threats may come her way,” said LaFleur.

Ashley Cushon is a clothing designer on the Design, Pattern & Prototype Team. As project officer and lead designer for the Army Tactical Brassiere Program, Cushon has led the design development and the test strategizing for the ATB concepts since the start of the program. She noted the importance of equipment that fits well and meets the needs of female Soldiers.

“The last thing the Soldiers need is to lose focus due to the discomfort of a next-to-skin garment that is meant to support them and not distract them,” said Cushon.

“As with all uniform and individual protection items we develop and evaluate, our goal is for the Soldier to not think about what they are wearing and be focused on their job,” said LaFleur.

Based on feedback from survey and focus group efforts, DEVCOM SC designers learned about capability gaps presented by the sports bras currently worn by Soldiers as well as Soldier preferences.

“We considered how to improve the comfort levels of a military appropriate performance sports bra, incorporating features that Soldiers prefer while making sure, on a design level, to keep functionality and support a priority throughout design development,” said Cushon. “The goal is to not only accommodate Soldiers that are doing field training exercises, but also those operating in combat environments where there could be potential exposure to different threats.”

The design of the Army Tactical Bras was driven by Soldier feedback and takes into consideration a variety of factors.

“It is the combination of materials, design, construction (seams/stitches) and fit which create the importance of the item — not just one feature alone,” said LaFleur. “Ashley and a team of other technical experts have been working with female Soldiers so that we can take their feedback into the design process from the start.”

The designers are working to provide female Soldiers with a few different bra options to accommodate individual preferences, match their activity level, and meet the needs of specific tasks.

“As Army clothing designers, our considerations expand beyond the general look or style of the garment, though that is definitely a factor,” said Cushon. “We aimed to provide the Soldiers with a variety of options inclusive of features that they identified work well for their activity level. One thing to keep in mind is that there is no ‘One Size Fits All’ solution out there.”

Cushon said that other very important considerations include the Soldiers’ familiarity and experimentation with the variety of styles (which varies) and a certain allegiance that they may have towards a particular type of bra.

“We had to look at this from two different perspectives; first as women, understanding a sports bra is very preference dependent and personal,” said Cushon. “Second, as designers, we interpret feedback and incorporate these points as functional elements within a design. This way, we are able to understand and reach more individuals within our target users.”

The DEVCOM SC team worked to include a wide variety of features, ranging from customizable fit to flame resistance.

“We added various features that allow Soldiers to customize the fit of the ATB concepts to their desired compression or support level,” said Cushon. “We also wanted to offer concepts that have less fasteners and hardware without forfeiting functionality, for Soldiers who prefer simplicity. Of course, a key feature is the Flame Resistant, or FR, protection, which we were able to integrate seamlessly into the designs. Whether it is the addition of a closure, the finish on a joining seam, the moisture management of the materials, the size and location of hardware or thread weight, every detail was meticulously considered to ensure we provided adequate variation for these first iterations.”

“Fit, Form and Functionality” shape the approach to products that are designed by the Design, Pattern and Prototype Team. Given that incorrectly fit bras can cause pain, and skin irritation, these three elements were particularly important in the design of the Army Tactical Bras.

“In this instance, where Army sports bras could almost be considered a niche-use case, these three elements take on a whole new level of importance,” said Cushon. “Females in general have become all too familiar with experiencing adverse effects related to the continued wear of an ill-fitting bra. Skin damage related to abrasion, or pain in the breast, shoulders and back relative to the lack of breast support are some common examples. For the ATB Concepts, we are utilizing a combination of size, style and military appropriate design elements for the individual Soldier’s body type and activity level that can help to mitigate distractions related to ill-fit or discomfort that could compromise their focus — ultimately enhancing their readiness level while active.”

The Army Tactical Bras are an important part of DEVCOM SC’s ongoing efforts to meet the needs of female warfighters.

“We see this as one of many great opportunities to provide female Soldiers items that are developed with input from their unique experiences guiding the development and evaluation,” said Cushon.

“Here at DEVCOM Soldier Center we have a strong multi-disciplined team — including military designers, anthropologists and textile technologists to name a few — that use science and technology in developing optimized solutions to keep our warfighters, in this case female, protected and focused on their mission,” said LaFleur. “The bra is an essential component to the female Soldier’s system of clothing.”

LaFleur explained that “ATB technologies developed at the Soldier Center will serve to inform the Army of potential functional product specification and material options which optimize bra performance for combat at training environments. These technologies and research findings will also provide insights as to how specific performance requirements can be defined for these and other Soldier worn garments.”

Brazilian Army Leadership Lauds Opportunity to Train with US Army

FORT POLK, La. — Prior to his soldiers arriving to the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk to take part in a bilateral training exercise, Gen. Estevam Cals Theophilo, commander, Brazilian Army Land Operations Command, emphasized the importance of his troops being ready for the next conflict.

“Our mentality must be that are prepared to fight in combat,” Theophilo said. “We can go a thousand years without war, but we can’t afford one second without being prepared to fight when war arises.”

Theophilo, along with Brig. Gen. Lynn Heng, U.S. Army South deputy commanding general, were able to see firsthand the Brazilian troops train in the area known as the “Box” during a visit to JRTC, Aug. 24-26 as part of a Distinguished Visitors Day.

“This training for us is very important,” Theophilo said. “We know this kind of exercise replicates fighting in true combat and the realness of this exercise prepares us to be ready.”

The Brazilian Army, or Exército Brasileiro, participation in JRTC is the part of an agreed to activity which was included in a five-year plan developed between the Exército Brasileiro and U.S. Army South during annual Army-to-Army Staff Talks. The Staff Talks Program promotes bilateral efforts in order to develop professional partnerships and increase interaction between partner nation armies.

Having arrived at Louisiana in early August, a company element of the 5th Light Infantry Battalion (Air Mobile) integrated with the 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment (White Currahee), 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) as part of rotation 22-09 to conduct tactical infantry operations, exercise interoperability and strengthen their ability to plan and execute complex maneuver operations.

The mission of the JRTC and Fort Polk is to train Brigade Combat Teams to conduct large scale combat operations on the decisive action battlefield against a near-peer threat with multi-domain capabilities. JRTC Rotation 22-09 was the second time a Brazilian Army unit came to the Combat Training Center to train with a U.S. Army brigade.

Once on the ground, the Brazilian soldiers were praised for their professionalism, tactical skills and ability to embed with their U.S. Army counterparts. While training in the Box, the Brazilians were given after action reviews by the Observer-Controllers, where they were given feedback on what they planned to do, what actually happened, and engaged with the opposing forces to learn what they did well and what they could improve on.

“They’ve done an exceptional job of deliberate planning, conducting rehearsals and understanding the mission they have to accomplish and moving to that location to accomplish that mission,” said Maj. Micah Chapman, JRTC Operations Group Task Force 3 executive officer. “They’re really effective in terms of security — whether its short halts, long halts, securing themselves, securing an area and having an active mindset of understanding the situation and responding, when necessary, lethally.”

Although much attention during the bilateral training engagement was focused on kinetic and tactical operations at the company and platoon-level, a critical area the Brazilian Army wanted to improve was developing leaders at their combat training centers to be more realistic to train their soldiers for combat.

A small contingent, comprised of several officers and noncommissioned officers, embedded with the JRTC Operations Group and completed an abbreviated academy where they could capture and coach the best practices of combined arms maneuver.

“We put them right in where they were able to make decisions, do coaching and adjudicate fights that were taking place between friendly and enemy forces,” Chapman said. “There are some differences between the way the U.S. Army go about observing, coaching, and training, and they desire to move in our direction.”

After watching his soldiers take part in the blank fire rehearsal, Lt. Col. Attila Balczó, commander, 5th Light Infantry Battalion (Air Mobile), gleamed with pride in describing their actions upon seizing the objective.

“I am very proud,” Balczó said. “We had many exercises and spent more than 120 days in the field to prepare our soldiers for this training. When I saw our soldiers executing on the battlefield here today, it was gratifying to see that our preparation had great results. They put on a good showing in simulated combat and their performance allows us to have interoperability with our U.S. partners.”

Balczó added that JRTC allowed the best environment for his soldiers to improve their capabilities and they will return to Brazil with much experience and become better trained to fight.

Army South Deputy Commanding General Brig. Gen. Lynn Heng mentioned the United States is fortunate to have the caliber of soldiers the Brazilian Army possesses as our allies to protect mutual security interests in the Western Hemisphere.

“We need to do these types of exercises to build upon our defensive capabilities and we enjoy doing these types of exercises, especially with Brazil, which further enhances our interoperability,” Heng said. “Brazil has been a key partner for us in the U.S. Southern Command area of operations for many decades and will be for many to come.”

Heng added as part of Army South’s motto “Defense and Fraternity” that it is imperative the command keep strong the fraternity with Brazil so that both armies remain successful in meeting training objectives and strengthening partnerships.

Following three hours of continuous assault on the rough central-Louisiana terrain, Theophilo addressed the soldiers, where he commended their efforts and recognized the occasion of Dia do Soldado, or Day of the Soldier — a Brazilian national holiday on Aug. 25 commemorating the birthday of the Duke of Caxias, patron of the Brazilian Army.

He asked his sweat-drenched, muddied and exhausted soldiers on their impressions of the training and received responses expressing how it was a unique opportunity to work with U.S. Soldiers, gain new experiences and familiarization with aircraft, share best practices and tactics and train in a different climate.

“Our countries have always been friends in military matters,” Theopilo said. “We have conducted training in the jungles of Brazil and now we’re training together here at Fort Polk. At the end of the day, this is what matters. Being ready for war is only possible through much practice, adjustments and more practice. Without field exercises, conversations aren’t worth anything.”

Finally, the general reminded his troops, “The U.S. is our principal ally — we have no doubt about that.”
