Ghillie Hut from MMI

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Montgomery Marketing debuted their new Ghillie Hut at the Spec Ops East Show in Fayetteville, NC. The manufacturers of the new SOCOM Patrol Pack have just completed an in-depth research project to ascertain the requirements of the Sniper community. The Ghillie Hut was designed to allow the Sniper to tailor the hide to the operational environment as well as individual taste.

MMI's New Ghillie Hut

It consists of a Veil, Frame, and Floor components. Due to the modular design the components can be used alone or together to form a Sniper’s Hide. The Veil is manufactured from a new printed mesh fabric and provides thermal as well as visual camo. MMI exhibited numerous swatches of fabric in various prints including camo patterns as well as a large map. The Frame is of a pop-up, hoop design and the the Floor is removable. The Frame is fully adjustable via side release buckles and tape webbing. Tension can be applied to the frame in order to form different shapes. Then, either the Veil or other camouflage material can be applied via magnet attachment points along the frame. Even placement of these magnets can be customized by the Sniper. The system is very lightweight and weighs in at less than five pounds with all components.

The Ghillie Hut is the first of several planned products developed specifically for the Sniper community. Future additions include a Ghillie Suit and Drag Bag.

ORP Jacket from RFI Gear

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Exclusively designed and manufactured by RFIG as a viable alternative to issue fleece jackets and bulky raincoats. The “Operational Rally Point” jacket features Raglan sleeves for comfort under a pack as well as split elastic at the waist and its quilted construction insulates with 3oz Primaloft. It also has two side pockets and an internal chest pocket as well as velcro for name and service tapes and rank. These design features ensure it won’t attract the attention of “uniform nazis”. Last but not least the ORP jacket compresses well and stuffs into its own pocket fitted with MOLLE attachments. A novel and refreshing approach to storage.

Our friends at Strike-Hold! have published some outstanding IWA coverage including pictures and background data on Defcon 5 from Italy, Germany’s Lindnerhof-Taktik, Tac-Gear and Heim Military & Outdoor, Britain’s Jack Pyke as well as the USA’s Eagle Industries and Condor Outdoor Products. For those of you have never heard of IWA, think SHOT Show in Germany.

Defcon 5’s polo in Vegetato Camo was my favorite piece from the article.

All in all it’s a great article, full of insight and the pictures alone are well worth the jump.

Excalibur Products Group offers the SALLE RUCK (Standard All-purpose Lightweight Loadcarrying Equipment). While the name begins with “standard”, it is anything but. First, the pack is mounted on a DEI 1606 Frame with suspension featuring Snap Dragon Buckles on the shoulder straps, sternum strap and waist belt. Additionally, the pack is manufactured from 500D cordura and has a 4000 cu in with plenty of pockets for organization.

Stubby Boonie Hat from Drop Zone Tactical

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Canadian manufacturer Drop Zone Tactical has introduced a new Boonie Hat in order to satisfy user feedback on the shortcomings of many current designs. One of the key features of this new hat is a short brim in order to preserve peripheral vision. The camouflage band has also been reinvented by adding a second row. In order to modernize the drawstring, Drop Zone came up with an innovative solution that actually works. They mounted a Duraflexâ„¢ Muglock at the rear of the hat on one of the camo bands and have routed the drawstring through the Muglock. To adjust the drawstring, just pull the drawstring to the rear. As it is secured with a simple overhand knot it is easy to remove when not needed. Additionally, there is a pocket on the interior of the crown to stow small items. Finally, velcro patches have been added to the top and rear of the crown for IFF purposes. Ventilation is via mil-spec, black oxide, screened vents.

ACU Test Update

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

Way back in May of 2008 we wrote an article about an impending Army Combat Uniform Test. Recently we received a report from the field about the test and we have been informed that at least one outcome of the trials is that the ACU will have button cuffs and trouser closures. Additionally, the Army will announce the full scope of changes soon and that they should be ready for issue as soon as this Fall.

Boonie Hats

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

We have fielded a lot of questions recently about Boonie Hats, particularly since Crye did not re-release their previous design. The word we have received is that a Booonie will be coming from Crye in the future but it won’t have all of the bells and whistles of the previous design.

SOD Boonie

There are a lot of options out there but they are all pretty much cookie cutter copies of the US GI-issue Sun Hat. However, one design stands out and is available now and our recommendation goes to it. Last June we wrote an article about the Special Operations Department Boonie. They took inspiration from the discontinued Crye Boonie and made further improvements.

It features two Velcro patches (crown and under rear brim), a sweat band, four slash vents, and a tightening band around the crown. They are available in Multicam, Tan, Black, Night Blue, Desertico CB62 (the desert pattern of Italian SF), Desertico EI (standard Italian Army desert pattern), and Vegetato EI. Be sure to reference the original article for further details. To order go to SODgear.com. Prices are in Euros.
