CANSEC 18 – Solarshield

Thursday, May 31st, 2018

If you’ve ever been around military vehicles on the summer, you know how hot their exterior surfaces can get. Armored vehicles are even worse.

Rheinmetall Defence’s Solar Sigma Shield is a blanket-like appliqué. It is designed to not only reduce the effects of solar heat in vehicles, but also provide multispectral camouflage. It is also fire resistant and no-slip/no-skid, another major plus for operating on armor vehicles.

Testing by Defence Research and Development Canada Show up to a 30% lower temperature when using Solarshield.

In this case, it is mounted to a Tactical Armored Patrol Vehicle from Textron Systems, currently in service with the Canadian Army.

CANSEC 18 – Colt Canada Modular Rail Rifle

Thursday, May 31st, 2018

Colt Canada’s new Modular Rail Rifle is the follow on to their Integrated Upper Receiver which relies upon Picatinny Rails at the fore end. Users found the hand guard to be too bulky for a proper grip and Colt Canada wanted to adopt a more attachment standard. They chose M-Lok for the MRR.

Here, you can see the single construction of the upper receiver and hand guard.

It’s available in three calibers, 300 blk, 5.56mm, and 7.62mm. The 7.62mm is based on the Colt 901 lower receiver.

They come standard with an improved chamber over the IUR, continuous integral top Pic rail, and a free floating, chromed hammer forged barrel. Additionally, Colt Canada offers ambidextrous controls for the MRR and various coated it anodized finishes.

CANSEC 18 – Mawashi Participates In NATO Integration of the Exoskeleton on the Battlefield Project

Thursday, May 31st, 2018

Last year we wrote about Mawashi’s UPRISE Tactical Exoskeleton. Once again this year, they exhibited with Logistik Unicorp, and they offered us an update on their project.

Along with other exoskeleton manufacturers, they were invited to participate in the NATO Integration of the Exoskeleton on the Battlefield Project.

As part of this project, Mawashi’s UPRISE Tactical Exoskeleton was trialed while worn under an EOD Suit during the second workshop held in the Quartier Maj Housiau Military Base in Peutie, Vilvoorde, Belgium on 6-8 March 2018.

This project is sponsored through NATO’s Defence against Terrorism Program of Work (DAT POW). The initial workshop held in Tren?ín, Slovakia, set the general framework to draft the Minimum Military Requirements (MMR) for Exoskeletons in support of EOD operators and highlighted the initial requirements and issues for their integration in EOD operations.

The aim of the second workshop was to investigate and prove how the Exoskeleton Technology currently available in the market may apply direct assistance to the EOD operations and how it can support and enhance the EOD team mobility, endurance, precision on target and increase the payload capacity. During the workshop, MMR were reviewed and two live trials were executed, when EOD teams conducted IEDD and CMD action using Exoskeleton Technologies.

This Successful Event ended at the NATO HQ, where the concept of the project as well as current achievements were presented during the meeting of National Armament Directors Representatives.

NATO’s Communications and Information (NCI) Agency produced this video.

Mawashi has conducted further NATO experimentation, including a Live Demonstration for the NATO Army Armaments Group (NAAG) Land Capability Group on Dismounted Soldier Systems (LCGDSS), on the Marine Corps Load Effects Assessment Program (MC-LEAP) Obstacle Course.
