Review of the Velocity Systems – BOSS Rugby

Thursday, October 24th, 2013

Mayflower Research & Consulting LLC frontman Travis Rolph sent me this review of the Velocity Systems BOSS Rugby. He wore it during a Multi-day, 169 mile ultramarathon called the Grand to Grand Ultra Stage Race. My experience with the BOSS Rugby isn’t nearly as arduous except that I’ll tell you that it is my favorite shirt. I’ve worn mine once a week since receiving it, for two reasons; comfort and styling. If you’ve seen me at a trade show, I was probably wearing a BOSS Rugby. I’ve also worn it at various ranges, while camping, to meetings and just kicking around town. It hasn’t picked, pulled or pilled and still looks great. Now, check out what Travis has to say about its performance under some pretty tough conditions.

Velocity Systems BOSS Rugby shirt
(Prototype, size large, black)

Aspects evaluated:

• Fit
• Durability of material
• Durability of construction
• Performance of seams (chafing)
• Pocket usefulness/velcro

Terrain

Location/Duration:

• Grand to Grand Ultra Stage Race (unsupported), 169 miles
• Northern Arizona/ Southern Utah high desert
• Hard pack and soft sand, slot canyons, mountains
• Temperature range; 17 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit
• High winds, blowing sand
• Seven days living out of a rucksack
• 26-52 miles per day of strenuous activity

Slot Canyon Stage 5

Observations:

The fit of the BOSS Rugby was loose but not too loose, this afforded full freedom of movement while ruck marching, running with a ruck, ascending ladders, ropes and routes requiring three points of contact and descending same. No durability issues were encountered (this shirt had been worn for normal PT and range work for three months prior to this evaluation). The high abrasion/stress areas of the shoulders, armpits, lower back and upper abdomen show no signs of wear. The flat stitch seams produced no chaffing even after being repeatedly sweated in and dried (via wind) to a white salt encrusted state. The material allowed for rapid drying during the windy conditions encountered which was appreciated when the temperature started falling quickly at sunset. The small Velcro sleeve pockets were perfect for a small weatherproof notebook/pen and sustainment fuel (gels). The Velcro exterior provided attachment for the race required country flag and race logo.

I don’t have any recommended changes; black was not the ideal color for the desert (heat/sun) but that has been addressed with the production of the tan and wolf grey variants.

UF PRO Striker Combat Shirt – Silent Hero Edition

Thursday, October 17th, 2013

UF PRO Striker Combat Shirt - Silent Hero Edition

The limited edition Striker Badlands Combat Shirt was created specifically for the Special Intervention Forces of the Silent Heroes Foundation, an organization that battles illegal rhinoceros horn trade in South Africa.

It features sleeves made of 50/50 NyCo ripstop Badlands camo, which are equipped with the typical Striker pocket configuration.

The torso and arm pit area uses a new Merino/COCONA knit for quick re-drying of the torso and arm pit area, which also offers excellent wear comfort. This fiber contains active charcoal to suppress bad odor after long periods of wearing. UF PRO air/pac inserts in the shoulder area provide further comfort.

The elbow areas are designed to hold D3O Trio Mid protectors, for additional elbow protection.

Pants - Highlander

SORD’s Field Pant is now available in Kryptek Highlander and Mandrake. Like the MultiCam and A-TACS variants, the Kryptek Field Pants are made from NyCo ripstop; the Tan model is made from 100% cotton. The Field Pant features a 10 pocket design: slanted hip pockets, deep cargo and rear pockets for magazines, a smart phone-sized accessories pocket, and calf pockets with ample space for additional storage. Included are oversized pocket buttons which are easily opened with gloves. The pant utilizes Velcro closure for a smooth comfortable wear, and 4″ belt loops provide ample space for a variety of belt options. The knees and seat of the pant are reinforced for long term durability. SORD has also replaced the original “Small-XL” generic sizing chart with actual width and inseam measurements.

WL Gore’s Reversible Marine Combat Jacket

Tuesday, October 8th, 2013

Last year, WL Gore introduced their reversible technology. This type of garment is great for organizations with multiple camouflage patterns like the Marine Corps. With the release of the woodland version of the USMC Combat Jacket, WL Gore displayed a prototype that reverses to Desert MARPAT during the recent Modern Day Marine expo.

20131006-201917.jpg

The Marines now have two separate Combat Jackets (Desert and Woodland MARPAT). The new optional wear CWJ will be available through clothing sales stores this Fall. But, if a Marine wants to deploy with both models it means additional weight and space in his sea bag, not to mention up front cost. The folks at Gore realized this and worked to adapt their reversible technology to the specialized fabrics used in this performance garment.

In addition to the Combat Desert/Woodland Jacket seen here, WL Gore has also produced versions of APECS. These types of reversible outerwear are great not just for the Marine Corps but also the Navy who uses different patterns for arid and woodland environments.

The Canoeist / Beach Recce Smock

Monday, October 7th, 2013

Back in the early 90s, UK-based Special Air Sea Services offered this little gem. The Canoeist / Beach Recce Smock was designed back when folding canoes were all the rage.

20131006-170925.jpg

This anorak-style smock incorporates an interesting adjustable hood design, double wrist closures, and elasticized waist, and pockets galore. In addition to a large, angled chest pocket accessible with the right hand, there is an additional conventional chest pocket as well as skirt pockets and a large pocket on the back. There are two other features on the hood that no one could seem to explain. First, was the snapped tab and second, the small pocket.

Don’t tell me that Travis and I were the only two guys to ever want one of these.
