Darley Days – Smartronix Radio Data Adapter Cables

Tuesday, August 25th, 2015

As a former radio operator, I’m all about anything that makes the job easier and lightens the load. The Smartronix Radio Data Adapter Cable does just that. It combines the functionality of multiple waveform-specific data cables into a single cable and allows that data to be transmitted via voice channel, even while speaking.  The secret sauce is in the box which contains the firmware.

Specifically, it replaces four Harris OEM cables which have to be carried depending on the mission profile.  In addition to the weight savings, there’s also time savings since the cables won’t have to be reconfigured for each use.

Waveforms Supported:
Synchronous Data (PDA-184)
Asynchronous Data
Asynchronous Remote
High Performance Waveform (HPW) / Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)
Ethernet (ANW2)

Each RDA cable is designed to operate with a specific radio model: AN/PRC-117F, AN/PRC-117G, AN/PRC-150, AN/PRC-152, AN/ARC-231, AN/PSC-5, AN/ARC-210, AN/PRC148, and SINCGARS (AN/PRC-119E and RT-1523) with longer versions as well as models for aircraft and vehicles.  One end connects to the radio and the other end to a computer USB port.

Warrior East – Cejay Engineering

Friday, July 10th, 2015

Cejay Engineering has had a great job with the Neptune signal beacon.  Based on this success they’ve introduced a Public Safety version in “come find me” Yellow.  Additionally, they’ve swapped the lights out to Red, White and Blue and removed the IR LED.  This helped lower the cost to make it more accessible by the civilian community.

C2R Fast – Multifunction Kit

Tuesday, June 9th, 2015

British kit producer C2R Fast was tasked with a customer to provide to provide several capabilities. In particular, they wanted a set of three things – lightweight shelter, thermal blanket and an air marker panel.  After some deliberation, C2R Fast decided to combine all three into one product.

Lightweight ripstop Multicam on the outer and ripstop nylon on the reverse with a thermal layer in between, this is able to fold up nice and small but can be used as a marker panel, is long enough to become a lightweight survival sleeping bag, and with tabs and loops in the right places, as a lightweight shelter.

Once you get your hands on a multifunction item like this, its use is only limited by the imagination.

Warrior West – Shakespeare

Friday, May 1st, 2015

I’ve been a big fan of Shakespeare’s Panther Mast that consists of a rolatube technology that rolls up flat and forms into a very strong tube as it is erected.  In the past, you had to prepare the Panther Mast on the ground and pul it up like a more traditional antenna system such as the OE-254.

The new 2 meter tripod system allows you to guide the mast straight up as it is guided through the apex of the tripod making erecting and striking the antenna much faster as well as more stable.

The new TCI R4 PTT can be seen to the right of this photo.  It replaces the older R3 across the board and is not only more compact, but more waterproof as well. This is due to some CAD work and a new tongue and groove fitting on the rear cover. Additionally, it is available in Black as well as Flat Dark Earth.
