Blackwater Pro Shops – Coming to a Town Near You

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

In an effort to distance themselves from the name which many felt was tainted, Blackwater executives came up with the inert name “Xe” to help revamp their tarnished image. Here we are a little over a year later and although Xe didn’t seem to do much for anyone, it seems that the name Blackwater still has some life in it. Despite negative connotations almost everywhere else, the firm still enjoys a great deal of support from the gun owning public. So it only seems natural that the Blackwater name and iconic bear paw logo would begin to see a resurgence. Poised to open are combination pro shops and indoor ranges in Fayetteville, North Carolina and Salem, Connecticut. What is the significance of these two disparate locations you might ask? Fayetteville should come as no surprise as it is home to Fort Bragg. However, many would not know that Salem is right up the road from the Navy’s submarine force based in Groton, Connecticut.

The facade of the new store in Fayetteville is very reminiscent of the original Blackwater Lodge in Moyock. Not only is the name in huge letters across the front of the building, you will also be able to purchase clothing and equipment emblazoned with the logo. If that doesn’t get your blood pumping you can also try out your new firearms at their indoor range.

Will there be more pro shops? Well our guess is that it depends on how well these do. Most people don’t know this but the rise of Soldier Systems Daily is tied directly to the fall of the house of Xe so this move holds a special place in our hearts. We say good luck to Blackwater Pro Shops but isn’t it a little ironic?

Army Helmet Recall – the Plot Thickens

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Last week we began to hear some rumblings from industry that the Advanced Combat Helmets sold to the Army by ArmorSource were actually produced by sub-contractor UNICOR (federal prison industries). UNICOR has first right of refusal for numerous commodities purchased by the government. For example, try to buy office furniture for a government building without going to UNICOR first. UNICOR is no stranger to manufacturing helmets, nor to making a mess of the deal. Some PASGT Helmets produced by UNICOR between 1980 and 2006 were found to have been incorrectly manufactured with not enough Kevlar. At that time, UNICOR was working as a sub-contractor to produce helmets for Sioux Manufacturing Corporation. So, unfortunately for ArmorSource (formerly known as Rabintex USA), the Army’s statement last week about removing the helmets from service makes it seem that they are under investigation by the Department of Justice. Perhaps they are, but the investigation is being handled by the US Attorney for Eastern Texas which also happens to be near the UNICOR facility in Beaumont, Texas that produced the helmets in question. This makes it seem to be a UNICOR-centric issue and begs the question whether UNICOR has any business manufacturing personal protective equipment for the military.

A Gun for Everyone

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

Some interesting factoids. Not sure of the veracity of some but it does show both sides of the issue. Of note is that despite the assertions of Hollywood and those interested in curtailing our gun rights, neither the Glock nor the AK are the most commonly used guns in crime. It’s huge so click on the picture and you will be taken to an external link with the entire chart in a size you can read.

Point Blank Files Chapter 11 – For Reals

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

They really did it this time. No more of that temporary protection crap. Point Blank Solutions filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Federal District Court in Wilmington Delaware on Wednesday citing the same reasons they asked for temporary protection last month. According to recently filed documents, they list assets of $63.9 million and debt of $68.5 million as of Feb. 28 so no word on the impact of the $20 million of Debtor-in-Possession (“DIP”) financing they had arranged for in April. A sizable portion of the debt is said to be tied to their former CEO so it has been difficult to find a buyer to get them back on track.

Propper Expands Military Management Team

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

In order to increase responsiveness to this fast paced market, Propper has expanded their Military Division with some promotions as well as new hires in business development, research and development, and uniform technologies. Propper has assembled some of the top subject matter experts in the industry to focus specifically on the military market. While there are some new members of the team, not all of the faces in this expanded division are unfamiliar.

Stu Muladore was promoted last year to Vice President of Military Sales. Stu came to Propper after retiring from the Marines in 2007 and put his experience to work as Military Business Manager.

Greg Graves serves as Sales Manager for Federal agencies and brings a wealth of experience to the team. Greg, an Army veteran has been with Propper for 11 years and has developed an excellent relationship with his customer base whether military or federal agency.

Timothy Booth, an Experimental and Research Chemist brings over 22 years of experience in fabric treatment and finishing and will work with the military to improve FR and other protection properties such as insect repellancy.

Jonathon Long recently retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in charge of procurement at the contracting command in Kuwait. He brings his experience as an acquisitions professional to bear in his new position as Program Manager, Military Systems.

Joining the team as Design Director is Dan Bergeron who cut his teeth in the outdoor industry with Arc’teryx where he produced several iconic designs. Dan went on to work with both BAE and Eagle Industries before joining Propper.

Lonnie Braxton comes on as Director of Fabric/Business Development after many years with Milliken & Company and will focus on new applications for textile technologies.

As you can see, Propper has assembled an excellent team and I am excited about the possibilities in the coming year.

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Mark Llano, head of Source One Distributors and Vetrepreneur of the Year recently authored an article on what it takes to be a good CEO. It is particularly poignant for military veterans turning their drive and good ideas toward the business world yet lack experience in this new environment.
