SOMA – Petzl

Saturday, December 15th, 2012

Petzl has unveiled a completely new combat helmet mounted light. Versatility is the key with the STRIX. Offered in both IR and VL variants, it comes in a two-tone camouflage and black along with three adjustable band colors: black, tan and camo. It also incorporates big, gnarly knobs for use with gloves and controls are tactile so your fingers won’t slip and you can tell which button you are using.

The STRIX includes selectable blue, red and green lights in 1 lumen as well as .35 – 30 lumens in white light. With the IR version you also get 15 – 45 mW IR output as well as an IFF feature. Additionally, once you select IR, it locks out the controls for visible light. Battery is a single AA and run time is 65 hours with alkaline and double that with lithium batteries.

The STRIX integrates Petzl’s proprietary bi-axle rotation. This feature is amazing. It makes adjustment of the light’s beam simple and puts it where you want it without having to cant your head. On the vertical axis is 120 deg of adjustment and the horizontal you get 180 deg of adjustment.

In addition to the ability to mount to Ops-Core’s ARC Rail, the STRIX also incorporates a metal PALS compatible clip at the rear to allow mounting to armor vests and other platforms. There is also an adjustable headband that incorporates a buckle at the rear so that you can wear the light around your neck. Petzl didn’t forget the guys wearing the ACH and other combat helmets. They’ve introduced the Adapt STRIX which clamps onto the lower lip of the helmet edge.

Look for these being ready for sale in late Spring 2013. Looks like they’ve got a hit with this one.

They’re making sure everything’s right. At 500 lumens, I’d say these will see a lot of interest at SHOT Show.

Unity Tactical Fusion Modular Mount Available for Pre-Order

Tuesday, December 4th, 2012

The much anticipated Fusion Modular Mount from Unity Tactical is finally available for pre-order. Fusion is really a system consisting of a base which UT refers to as a Hub as well as adapters for accessories such as lights, lasers, optics, and other ancillary equipment. The strength of Fusion is that, as new items are introduced and TTPs change, there’s no need to purchase an entirely new mount. All you’ll need to do is reconfigure your setup with adapters. It’s kind of like a mount version of a Legos construction set.

The Picatinny standard hub is constructed from precision milled 6061-T6 aluminum that is Type 3 anodized in Black or FDE and features four mounting surfaces; a top surface, forward surface, and two wing surfaces. Additionally, the wing accessories are reversible. Incidentally, these wing accessory adapters are also compatible with UT’s Ops-Core ARC rail adapter as well as the Tubular Rail Adapter.

Here are a few configurations to give you an idea of how the Fusion’s components can be set up.

Pre-order now and get 20% off as well as free shipping and a free t-shirt.

Grey Group Training Gives Us the Lowdown on a TangoDown Rail Mounted Front Sight Prototype

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

20121128-125514.jpg

Grey Group Training got the scoop on a new rail mounted front sight from TangoDown that is designed to accommodate top mounted lights such as the Inforce model seen in these photos. It will also accommodate the SureFire 300.

20121128-133846.jpg

I run a top mounted X300 on one of my carbines but it has to sit in front of the fixed front sight on a Daniel Defense rail. I like having the light there with the high thumb grip but this would be better than my current setup as it would move the front sight even further out and increase the sight radius.
