Spirit Of Blue Foundation Adopts A-TACS Camouflage As Official Pattern Family

Sunday, September 15th, 2013

A-TACS LE

The Spirit of Blue Foundation is proud to announce that it has adopted the A-TACS LE pattern of law enforcement camouflage as its official camouflage pattern. A-TACS Camo has seen great success with its military oriented AU and FG patterns, which are utilized by some SWAT and tactical teams who serve in more rural areas. But, the new A-TACS LE pattern was specially developed for the needs of urbanized law enforcement. A-TACS Camo will be donating a portion of all sales of the new A-TACS LE patterned materials to the Spirit of Blue Foundation to fund Safety Equipment Grants to law enforcement agencies nationwide.

“A-TACS joined on early as a Safety Equipment Grant sponsor in 2011, even before they really had much of a law enforcement presence. They did it because they were so supportive of what we were trying to accomplish and they cared a lot about those who dedicate their lives to service,” commented Ryan T. Smith, Vice Chairman of Grants & Sponsorships for the Spirit of Blue. “When they approached us with this new LE pattern, and wanted to give a portion of every sale to the Foundation, we were humbled. We are going to make a great impact with their ongoing donation.”

The A-TACS LE Camo pattern combines various shades of grey, blue and black and utilizes the trademark “organic pixel” look developed by A-TACS Camo for its original A-TACS AU Camo pattern. A-TACS LE also incorporates variable angles and urban forms derived from real-world photography that effectively utilizes an even blend of light and shadow to create unique patterns with a slight horizontal flow. Additionally, A-TACS LE Camo was developed to work with variable combinations of black or blue nylon gear and other equipment allowing municipalities and departments the option to easily upgrade their gear on an “as needed” basis, gradually phasing in new items while still maintaining a cohesive and uniform appearance. “We’ve had a great working relationship with the folks at the Spirit of Blue Foundation for the past several years and have been looking for ways to make a greater contribution to the good work that they’re doing,” said Phil Duke, Co-Owner and Pattern Developer for A-TACS Camo. “With A-TACS LE Camo being so closely tied to Law Enforcement both in its development as well as its implementation, taking the relationship between both of our organizations to this next level of involvement just seemed like a natural fit. This is something we believe in, and we are extremely excited to see where it goes from here.”

Burlington Wins $5.3 Million Performance Fabric Contract For Air Force PT Uniforms

Thursday, September 12th, 2013

Air Force PT shorts

Burlington Industries LLC, a division of International TextileGroup (ITG), announced it has been awarded a $5.3 million contract to supply micro denier polyester fabrics to the U.S. Air Force for use in physical training (PT) shorts. These fabrics will be produced at the company’s facilities in Cordova and Burlington, North Carolina.

These advanced woven polyester fabrics are part of Burlington’s MCS family of performance fabrics, which are 35 percent lighter than the current fabrics used for PT shorts and have improved breathability and inherent moisture management properties. Using Sorbtek fiber technology made by Unifi, the lightweight MCS fabric works by absorbing moisture, moving it away from the skin, and releasing it for quick evaporation. This allows the wearer of the shorts to remain cool, dry and comfortable. In addition, Sorbtek fiber provides inherent soil release properties to protect the fabrics against everyday soils, like sweat and grass.

“Light weight performance fabrics are one of Burlington’s core competencies,” said Burlington President Jeff Peck. “Our MCS technology is the performance foundation of the Air Force’s improved physical training uniform. The renewed emphasis being given to physical training within the U.S. Armed Forces has made moisture management, durability and stain resistance essential performance attributes for PT uniforms.”

Burlington has been an integral part of the defense supply chain for more than 50 years and is uniquely positioned as one of today’s most diversified R&D centers for performance and technical fabrics for the military. “We continue to explore new opportunities to equip and protect our U.S. Armed Forces,” said Peck. “Our products range from basic innovations that elevate the performance of PT, battle and dress uniforms to the newest advanced technologies in infrared, insect repellant, cold weather, fire, and battle protection.”

Several years ago, to expand its military business, ITG combined the resources from four of its business units, Burlington, Safety Components, Narricot, and Carlisle, to create an extensive military products platform of diversified fabrics developed to service the specific needs of the military market. Products include fabrics for camouflage combat and utility uniforms, Class A dress uniforms, physical training and extreme cold weather wear, flame resistant and fire fighting protective clothing, high performance equipment, ballistic fabric and webbing for body armor and load carrying equipment, and other specialty items.

Burlington has been awarded a total of seven military contracts this year totaling more than $236 million over a five-year period. Awards include dress uniform and physical training uniform fabrics for the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy.

U.S. Elite Expands GSA Capabilities With Addition Of New Brands

Thursday, September 5th, 2013

U.S. Elite have announced that they will be expanding their offerings through their General Services Administration (GSA) contract with the addition of Arc’teryx LEAF, Outdoor Research and DRIFIRE, joining the brands of Granite Gear and High Ground to their already existing GSA offerings.

GSA is a government agency that acts as a procurement vehicle for the federal government. In order to get a GSA contract, a vendor must be thoroughly vetted; which appeals to the government buyers in knowing that each brand is hand-selected, and prices have effectively been pre-negotiated. Another appeal to GSA, is that it provides an online shopping cart at gsaadvantage.gov.

“As a veteran-owned company, we understand the importance of providing the best products for the best prices to our war-fighters,” stated U.S. Elite CEO, Steve Keefer. “The addition of these top-tier brands allows us to continue to provide for those who put themselves into harm’s way for our freedoms.”

The GSA offerings through U.S. Elite’s contract, GS-07F0287W, are now available to qualified buyers through their government sales page, www.us-elitegear.com/government-sales, or email Government Sales at gs@US-EliteGear.com.

New Armor Inspection System Ensures Ballistic Plates Safe For Deploying Soldiers

Wednesday, September 4th, 2013

The Army put out a press release yesterday discussing the use of Non-Destructive Test Equipment for hard armor plates in USAREUR which saves time and money over the old process of shipping them back to CONUS to be X-rayed for cracks.

size0

Soldiers who have deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation New Dawn, have the shared experience of being issued ballistic plates for their body armor that have been turned in by other Soldiers after their combat tours. Part of ensuring plates are combat ready involves a detailed inspection process to identify defective plates, and remove them from circulation.

Until recently, the process of ensuring plates being issued were inspected within a specific time frame meant the 21st Theater Sustainment Command spent time and money sending plates to Sierra, Calif., for inspection, before being shipped back to Europe for deploying Soldiers. The current policy only allows for plates to be issued to deploying Soldiers if they have been inspected within the previous nine months.

“What we had that needed to be scanned would be shipped back to the States,” said Carla Stovall, a logistics management specialist with the 21st TSC’s Support Operations and a native of Copperas Cove, Texas. “Anytime there was a deploying unit we would send our requirements back with the amounts that we would need and they would ship over inspected plates.”

Now, the 21st TSC has acquired an Armor Inspection System, or AIS, which is a system that uses X-rays to scan plates in order to identify deficiencies within them. Having the new system now allows for a mobile team of Non-Destructive Test Equipment, or NDTE, personnel to be flown in to inspect and certify the plates used throughout U.S. Army Europe.

“This is actually the first fixed site with an AIS that we have where we can actually jump the mobile team right into the inspection process,” said Bruce Cardell, the NDTE team lead and a native of Lakewood, N.J. “The intent is to take a mobile team, drop them into a fixed site, process all of the plates they have, and place the plates back on the same cycle and same inspection window, while at the same time taking the bad plates out of service.”

“Now the only plates that are being sent back to the states are the unserviceable plates, which will go back into circulation once they are repaired,” or be destroyed if they cannot be repaired, added Cardell.

The cost saving advantage of having a fixed AIS in Kaiserslautern is substantial, said Cardell.

“If you look at the big picture, it’s significant; the logistical cost, the transportation and the resources it requires to get things from point a to point b is enormous,” he explained.

In the past, it was common to have a large number of plates in the warehouse that were considered not issuable because of the length of time that had passed since their last inspection.

“Having available stock makes a big difference when you have deployers,” said Stovall. “We need to have the right plates for the Soldier when they’re ready to deploy so they have that peace of mind that they’re deploying with the best.”

Currently the mobile team is on the ground on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Germany, until Oct. 8, inspecting the more than 50,000 plates from across Europe, in an effort to maximize the stock of plates eligible for deployment.

Having the NDTE inspection team on site “should be a recurring thing,” said Stovall. “All of the plates that are considered issuable will all expire at the same time so we would want to have that taken care of before the nine months are up.”

“We look at the operation as being a lifeline and gives the Soldiers and commanders the reassurance that they have the best equipment in theater,” said Cardell. “It gives them that reassurance that they have the best type of plate protecting them in the field.”

Once complete, the plates which pass inspection will be sent back to the various central issuing facilities throughout Europe, and will be ready to protect Soldiers deploying all throughout the world.
