VertX has announced their upcoming line of wearables and organizational kit that we first hinted about at the 2013 SHOT Show. Made in collaboration with Industrial Alchemy, a leading outdoor and tactical designer, the line includes various bags and packs designed for low-profile operations and concurrent with their release a new line of rolling duffel bags. The line has been rigorously tested and tweaked since the reveal earlier this year, more recently by SME Matt Jacques of Victory First Consulting.

“Industrial Alchemy and Vertx have put some real thought and work into these bags,” Jacques advises. “There is some unexpected innovation here. New concealment elements, stowage, the incorporation of different modularity… The design of the…we can call them mounting solutions will make waves in the modular pool, It is well done. This is going to change the way people organize their gear and work on the range. There are some very different options.”

Along with the announcement came two photos exclusive to SSD, featured in this article. The brand-new line will make its debut at SHOT Show 2014.

Doomsday Castle Comes to NatGeo

Wednesday, August 7th, 2013

Prepping continues to be all the rage and even better are reality series about preppers. It appears “Doomsday Preppers” has spawned its first spinoff.

At Outdoor Retailer I was checking out the ballroom when I ran across the Wise Foods booth. They sponsor the NatGeo series “Doomsday Preppers”. One of the more interesting episodes last season involved a man who had built a castle in the wilderness and was testing his progeny to determine who he would leave it to. Sounds like it has everything needed for a great reality series of its own; family conflict. And they’ve got it. Hopefully, they’ll share a trick or two. Coming August 13th.

Caveat Emptor – Leupold Counterfeit Warning

Monday, July 29th, 2013

Leupold put out a warning detailing a recent surge of counterfeit Mark 4 and Prismatic riflescopes. The scopes’ apparent origin is the People’s Republic of China, and bear many of the marks and trade dress of current Leupold & Stevens riflescopes. If a scope seems suspect, the serial number can be called in to 1-800-LEUPOLD to confirm its authenticity. The counterfeit scopes can also be identified by several characteristics not found on authentic Leupold scopes, as seen in the images below.

NAVY SEALS — DANGER CLOSE

Thursday, July 25th, 2013

Hans Halberstadt and I are longtime friends but I read his books long before I knew him. He began making photographs as a door gunner in Viet Nam, then made movies for a while, then wrote books about the military for thirty years and 67 titles. He has taken some of his extensive imagery collection and began to create videos. I think it’s a great way to showcase his work but also pay tribute to our forces. Since SSD is headquartered in a Navy SEAL town, what better fit than a video dedicated to them? What a great coincidence.

Over the years much of his coverage has been of SOF – Army SF, SEALs and SWCC, JTACs, and USMC Recon – and these will become videos of their own. Eventually, he plans to do additional videos on combat aviation, armor, EOD, infantry, and other topics.

Halberstadt’s company, Military Stock Photography, offers imagery that is in compliance with DoD directives for commercial use. It’s a great resource for industry.

Trigger Magazine

From the makers of Guns & Ammo comes Trigger Magazine. A new special interest and firearms publication, Trigger covers “guns, optics, ammo, gear, swag, carry, adventure, sport, history, [and] lifestyle”. This inaugural issue has articles on Tracking Point, POV cameras, custom pistols, defensive driving, WWII reenactments, the new Call of Duty, and more. What really caught my eye was the article on Rock River Arms, which included admiring detail of CEO Chuck Larson’s sports cars. Say what you will about Recoil, but this is the second similar special interest publication from other publishing houses since Recoil’s introduction a year and a half ago. To sum up Trigger Magazine, it’s Maxim for NRA members (except it’s a total sausage fest), but I like it regardless and will be picking up future issues as they’re published.
