‘Murph’ – The Movie

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

I’ve been hearing for some time about efforts to make a movie about fallen US Navy SEAL, LT Michael Murphy, recipient of the Medal of Honor. Just yesterday, I found about a grass roots effort being staged on indigogo.com to raise $75,000 over the next two weeks in order to produce a documentary on this extraordinary man. Indiegogo.com works much like Kickstarter to crowd source funding and provides incentives to those who invest in projects.

They’ve already funded the early stages of the film internally but will soon move into the production and post-production phases and expenses will grow exponentially, including but not limited to administration, travel, location shoots, editing, music, titles, effects, etc. This is why they need your help making this film a reality.

Tactical Bible Stories: Personal Security Tips from the Bible

Sunday, June 3rd, 2012

The Bible is the most widely read book in the history of man. It is full of examples of tactics, concepts, and ideas that are still used and taught by modern security professionals. “Tactical Bible Stories” takes a stereotype-busting approach to personal security and uses Bible stories as illustrations to make them fun and easy for anyone to understand, remember, and apply.

-Was David’s sling a wise choice for his fight with Goliath? Why?
-How did Jesus show us the importance of keeping our distance?
-Did Gideon’s minuscule army make sense tactically? Why?

Tactical Bible Stories is written very simply for those who aren’t self-defense experts or tactical aficionados.

Tactical Bible Stories is being officially released on Tuesday, June 5th and for the entire day, the ebook will be free and the paperback will be available at cost. The book has already received rave reviews from both law enforcement officers and firearms instructors for its simple, conversational style and practical advice from a unique perspective. The author believes that this book will make a huge difference in people’s lives and he wants to get it into the hands of as many people as possible.

The Activity – A Graphic Novel

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

The evolution of global conflict necessitates the development of special operations to rise and meet the call. Such is the center of THE ACTIVITY, a monthly comic book series from premier publisher Image Comics (who brought us THE WALKING DEAD). Written by Nathan Edmondson and illustrated by Mitch Gerads, the story follows a Direct Action Special Operations team through a series of adventures. The first collected volume is in stores June 6.

I’ve read every issue so it was great to be introduced to Nathan Edmondson by a mutual friend. He has been learning about the gear and how it works in order to improve the authenticity of the work. While it is fiction after all, look for some very cool stuff popping up later this year.

“The Activity: Volume 1” is available through Amazon or our local comic book dealer.

Blast From The Past – Becoming Batman

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Batman is the ultimate Badass. A science hero, Batman is the product of dumb luck and a very strong will. He has tapped the very pinnacle of human potential and has access to Gucciest of kit. I’d say he is so popular because, of all super heroes, he is the most plausible and it’s easy to put yourself in his shoes.

A book released in late 2008 , “Becoming Batman: The Possibility of a Superhero” from The Johns Hopkins University by E. Paul Zehr examines what it would take to become the “Bat”. Zehr is an associate professor of kinesiology and neuroscience at the University of Victoria in British Columbia and long time practitioner of Chito-Ryu karate-do.

Scientific American has a great interview with Zehr on the subject.

Available from The Johns Hopkins University Press.

The Complete RANGER DIGEST : Volumes I-V Now in Ebook Format

Saturday, May 26th, 2012

Guys who’ve been around awhile probably remember “Ranger” Rick Tscherne’s Ranger Digest series of book. Beginning in 1988, he released 5 volumes of home brewed field tips featuring hand drawings. In later volumes he printed tips from readers and they remind me very much of the early internet with lots of sharing of knowledge and distributed in simple forms. Now, after being out of print for many years, the entire Ranger Digest collection is offered in ebook format and available at Amazon for Kindle, and Barnes & Noble for the Nook.

We recently found out that Loose Cannon partnered with the author to create a new Revised edition in digital eBook formats. Loose Cannon told us, “Many items/tips may be a bit dated, particularly when referring to various equipment no longer currently used by the U.S. military or regarding products that may have been for sale when the guides were originally published. We have taken efforts to try to add updated info and or supplier links to various products/equipment mentioned in the books, but were not always able to recommend a suitable replacement. As such, note that some items or information may be out of date and thus was left in the guide to provide a semblance of what the original guide included within the context as a whole. The goal was to provide as much of the original structure and flavor of the original books in creating this new edition.”

Like the originals, this sounds like fun.
