ADS C4ISR Vehicle Concept Demonstrator – Part I – Overview

Tuesday, July 15th, 2014

During Warrior Expo, ADS Inc exhibited a new concept demonstrator that integrates C4ISR technologies directly into a lightly armored vehicle based on the legacy uparmored HMMWV. For those unfamiliar, C4ISR includes Command, Control, Communications, Computers as well as Intelligence, Surveillance and and Reconnaissance capabilities. It’s not that this is a dedicated command and control vehicle or even a scout vehicle but rather, ADS recognizes that over the last 10 years, there has been a boom in the deployment of new C4ISR technologies. The real hurdle is delivering this disparate information to the end user and then, making sense of all of it.

ADS teamed with Granite Tactical Vehicles, FLIR, Harris and SYNEXXUS. Everything here is Commercial-Off-The-Shelf. It’s just been configured in such a way that the whole is greater than the sum of its individual components.

If you were at Warrior East, I hope you had a chance to check out this vehicle. If not, ADStv created three video segments that we will use to show what it’s all about. Below, John Fristachi from ADS of ADS discusses the project.

The Welbike – WWII Minibike for Paratroopers

Tuesday, July 15th, 2014

Developed at Station IX of the British Special Operations Executive, over 3600 Welbikes were produced during 1942 and 43. They were used operationally by the British 1st and 6th Airborne Divisions as well as Commando units.

During World War II, Station IX was known as the Inter Services Research Bureau was located at Welwyn. Interestingly enough, everything developed by this organization gained a “wel” prefix such as the Welrod integrally suppressed pistol. They were produced by the Excelsior Motor Company, weighing in at 71 lbs, equipped with a 98cc engine.

Due to British TTPs at the time, all equipment was dropped in containers and the Welbike was no exception. Naturally, this led to some problems. It became a bare bones affair with no lights and just a rear brake. Due to the restrictions on size some simple assembly was required to get it into action. In fact, it was designed to be removed from the container (marked “motorcycle”) and be off in 11 seconds. The issue was finding the darned things on the drop zone. Wandering around on a hot drop zone could hazardous to one’s health.

The fuel tank held less than a gallon and had to be hand pressurized due to its location in relation to the carburetor. But, you could get about 90 miles at 30 mph in a single tank.

Klim produces a wide variety of motor sports protective clothing (as well as few new tactical pieces). One of their most popular products is the Adventure Rally Jacket. This thing is literally packed with features including body mapped reflective panels for increased visibility in traffic, air flow vents, numerous pockets, removable collar system to accommodate Leatt collars, and integrated D3O padding with Dow Corning’s Deflection breathable armor.

The Adventure Rally Jacket was originally designed for wear on the Dakar Rally, an endurance race where riders can’t wear a pack. It integrates a shoulder strap system and one wearer I spoke with said he had carried 60 lbs in his jacket comfortably.

The Polaris Sportsman Ace combines aspects of an ATV with features found on Polaris’ line of side by side vehicles. A certified ROPS cab frame and bolstered bucket seat with 3-point seat belt secures the rider within the Ace. The Ace also sports more traditional automotive style controls, including a tilt steering wheel and floor-mounted pedals, as well as instrumentation such as a tachometer, analogue speedometer, and AWD indicator; an included DC outlet allows the driver medium through which to power their devices. The Ace has a combined storage weight capacity of 360 lbs. through the front covered storage bin and rearward bed, and is capable of towing upwards of 1500 lbs.

DSC04156

The engine is a 4-stroke Pro-Star single cylinder with 32HP peak horsepower, and an electronic fuel injection system and liquid cooling, and is placed at the rear of the vehicle. The Ace comes with a 5.25 gallon fuel tank. The drive system is on-demand true AWD / 2WD.

The Sportsman Ace looks to make for a great vehicle for Law Enforcement and Government agencies, including Military customers. It combines the AWD capability of a traditional ATV with the safety and controls of a side by side, making it an excellent single occupant vehicle which can be utilized for patrol, surveillance, off-road pursuit, and tracking.
