Combat Flip Flops

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

We wanted to catch you up on the new lifestyle footwear brand, Combat Flip Flops that we introduced you to last Fall.

The brains behind Combat Flip Flops will be in Las Vegas next week along with the GM of their Afghan factory for anyone who would like to do a face-to-face and take a look at the AK’s, Tuck-Tuck’s, and Poseidons or discuss the manufacturing process.

For the rest of us, they are opening up the website to pre-orders next week as well and we’re itching to order our first pair. I am interested in the AK-47 and Tactical Mama is leaning toward the Tuck-Tuck. Some might scoff at the price tag but considering the materials and details in the design, it isn’t out of line. Particularly when you consider that it is an investment in Afghanistan that isn’t war or drug trade related.

Magpul Ronin

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

We’ve mentioned the Ronin from Magpul Heavy a few times since its debut at SHOT Show 2010. It’s an awesome concept, taking a Buell 1125 CR and modifying it. They’ve added a four bar linkage, mono-shock, airbox, and a radiator up front in the traditional headlight location where it has more access to clean air.

This video from YouTube user jsmarais83 gives you a good glimpse at the bike.

Spike’s Tactical Rally Fighter Walkaround

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

We are big fans of Local Motors and their Rally Fighter kit car. It turns out that Spike’s Tactical is an even bigger fan. They went out and built a custom version of the Rally Fighter for themselves. Photographer John J Irvin captured this walk around of Spike’s creation.

Local Motors on the Rally Fighter:

The Rally Fighter is a premium, authentic off-road experience. It is capable of racing the deserts of the American Southwest and handle the city streets. But build in an extra 10 minutes on your commute to answer questions, it’s a head-turner!

The Rally Fighter is the first vehicle by Local Motors and will be built with the our customer in Phoenix, Arizona.

Ambush Firearms Launches Website

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

Although the brand officially launched early this year at SHOT Show, Daniel Defense’s hunting line, Ambush Firearms now has a web presence. AR platforms are quickly becoming a viable option for hunting as manufacturers accessorize the basic platform for the task. Daniel Defense decided to get out in front of this growing phenomenon with the Ambush Firearms brand and produce rifles specially outfitted for hunting. The Ambush 6.8 is available in full rifle configurations as well as upper receiver groups. The monolithic rail upper features a full length Picatinny rail fore end with an indexable foregrip that will feel natural to hunters, reminding them of a shotgun fore end. However, while not commonly offered in a hunting gun, many hunters will find the adjustable buttstock a welcome addition to their rifle. Additionally, the Ambush 6.8 incorporates a Geissele Super Semi-Auto two-stage trigger. Finally, Ambush products can be had in Black as well as the popular hunting patterns, Realtree AP and Mossy Oak Break Up Infinity.

EXO from Exoconcept is a surface watercraft designed to assist swimmers. Exoconcept advertises “No Emission + No Noise + No Smoke + No Maintenance.” Sounds like it might be useful for certain surface swimmer or rescue applications. If not, it looks like one hell of a lot of fun.

Available in various models, the EXO is made from ABS plastic or carbon fiber and powered by a 3.5, 4.5, or 7 kw electric motor connected to a water jet drive.

Backpacker magazine selected Beyond Clothing’s RoughRider Pant under the Editor’s Choice Snow Category for custom fit pants. Editor-in-chief Jonathan Dorn boasts a 36″ inseam and liked the Schoeller Dynamic fabric’s ability to cut the wind. Eagle Nest Outfitters Lounger

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

The Lounger from Eagle Nest Outfitters is just what I needed to relax after a hard day of writing. I’d seen it hanging in outdoor stores but the Lounger was ever properly set up to give it a go. However, at the most recent Outdoor Retailer, ENO had a couple of Loungers set up and they beckoned me into their booth to try it out. Truthfully, after a long day of walking the show floor, I thought I was in heaven and I knew right then I had to have one so when my birthday came earlier this month I got myself a present.

20111024-211136.jpg

The real quandary was how to hang it. None of my eaves hang out far enough to keep me from laying up against the house and none of my trees had the right limb for the job, so I had to come up with a different plan of attack. Instead, I settled for a stand I found on Amazon that is designed for use with other brands of loungers. They all basically look the same online so I bought one. Sure, it was easy enough to assemble, coming in only four pieces. But, as usual, Murphy showed up. The top piece sits on a sleeve and is held fast by two bolts. Unfortunately, the bolts are too big. Naturally, no return instructions but since the bolts were really redundant anyway, I decided to keep it.

A word of caution for those who decide to go my route. The ENO Lounger is built a little different than other brands. In fact, you cannot use the clip and spring that Amazon recommends you purchase with the stand. If you do, you will sit so low that your rear will scrape the base of the stand. You’ll be just fine attaching the Lounger right to the stand’s eyelet or if you need a little more height, you can fit the Lounger’s attachment ring around the tube of the stand. If you do this, prepare a collar to pin it in place as it could slip off if you bounce around too much. Better yet, don’t bounce around. Just relax.

The Lounger itself is available in a variety of colors and is very comfortable. It features a pillow for your head, removable drink cozy, two side pockets for magazines or books (my iPad fits fine in one) and an adjustable, suspended foot rest. The frame is collapsible aluminum so it can be transported and will accommodate up to 260 lbs.

As for performance? So far so good. I’d recommend a Lounger to anyone who has the means to hang it and use it, liberally.
