SOFIC – Wilcox Ind and Aviation Specialties Unlimited Partner To Offer Next Generation Aviation Mount Battery Pack

Wednesday, May 25th, 2016

Wilcox Industries has made a major announcement. They’ve teamed with Aviation Specialties Unlimited of Boise, Idaho to develop and offer a completely new mount and battery pack for aviation helmets.  For decades, the aviation community has used the same ANVIS mount and battery pack which are prone to damage and cannot be reliably repaired. The plan is to rectify that situation.

The mount will be modular and can not only be used with standard aviation helmets, but also with other Wilcox ground helmet shrouds. The mount will also be molded from advanced polymer materials. Between the mount and battery pack, they’ve successes in lowering the weight by 20 grams. Field maintainable, the items can also be evac’d to ASU for repair.

The power cord connector follows the contour of the helmet. Also, rather than a neck cord, aircrew will now have access to the Wilcox retractable lanyard like on ground applications.

Wilcox loves their dovetail mounts and they’ve integrated into the rear of the battery pack. An adapter plate is available that can velcroed unto the helmet for mounting. They’ve also eliminated the battery cartridges. ust put the batteries in, positive side up and users can swap between primary and auxiliary power.

ASU will be the exclusive distribution and maintenance channel as well the Parts Manufacture Authority for this new product, still under development with Wilcox. Their PMA certification is maintained through the FAA for safe to fly items. They expect full rate production by October, once EMI and environmental (Mil-Spec and DEFSTAN) testing are complete.

Joe Carley Joins Team Vortex

Wednesday, May 11th, 2016

Vortex Optics of Middelton, Wisconsin is proud to announce the addition of Joe Caley to their small and select cadre of sponsored shooters.

Joe served in the US Army from 1990 to 2011 as an enlisted Infantryman, Cavalry Scout and Infantry Officer. Joe was severely wounded in Iraq in 2009. As a result he spent two years in hospitals for his second TBI, several surgeries for his legs, feet, a spinal injury and vestibular paresis. With the help of his doctors and therapists they were able to train and calibrate a Bioness System that allows him to climb obstacles, hills and walk and traverse mountain trails.

A year ago, Joe was approached by a friend at AMU asked him to shoot a PRS match. Joe jumped at the chance and hasn’t looked back. At time of writing he is 19th in Tactical Division, placed 9th at Mammoth Sniper Challenge and was invited to shoot in the exclusive Allegheny Sniper Challenge in Seneca Rocks, WV. Joe plans to move to the open division in 2017.

“Competing in PRS and tactical matches is challenging for most able bodied competitors, I often get told by other Shooters that they don’t know how I do it, and though they are beat up and tired they can’t possibly go and complain about it. A lot of times I show them the burn marks on my skin that the devices give me from putting electrical impulses through my legs. I don’t complain, I wear the scars with pride because I’m out there competing and not sitting around feeling sorry for myself. I enjoy meeting the many competitors and learning new things from all the top shooters. Most rewarding to me is when someone comes up and tells me they had no idea I had those injuries because I wear long pants to cover my equipment. This makes me feel great because I’m not looking for attention. I am just looking for a new normal.

Along the way I’ve had some great help with PRS and shooting, Vortex Optics being one that always got me some great optics to use, but now as of April I was notified that I am now one of the only sponsored match shooters of Vortex Optics. I know this is a huge honor because this family of shooters is very small and they are world and national champions. I feel fortunate to have the backing of Vortex and their entire staff”

Warrior West – Cadex SOLO Sight Mount

Wednesday, May 4th, 2016

The SOLO Sight Mount may be familiar to reader who are Marines. It is a component of the USMC Heavy Machine Gun Sight System and has been given the nomenclature of M520 Ballistic Extended Rail Mount and is intended for use with the M2, Mk 19 and HK GMG.

Essentially, the SOLO serves as a shock absorber for the sights, absorbing up to 88% of the recoil force. Additionally, a collapsible eye cup is available for the telescopic optic that not only helps maintain focus on the optic, but also accounts for an additional 8% of recoiled force. Together, they offer a much more stable optic for these heavy weapons.

The Picatinny standard SOLO has a quad-rail configuration. Two are across the top of the mount for optic and red dot back up as well as a side mounted rails for LRF or other devices.

Additionally, the SOLO features an easy-to-adjust, illuminated elevation wheel which quickly raises and lowers the sights. The wheel is reversible and easily swapped from .50 to 40mm.

USASOC International Sniper Competition Winners Used Wilcox RAPTAR-S

Tuesday, April 26th, 2016

Not only did 2016’s winning two-man team from Fort Bragg’s 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) use the RAPTAR-S range finder from Wilcox Industries, but so did the second and third place teams.

The annual competition draws sniper teams from domestic and international military units as well as federal and state law enforcement agencies. This year, there were 24 teams, including four foreign teams, descended upon Fort Bragg’s SOF Sniper Course facility, the famous Range 37, in order to determine who’s the best. There were a total of 19 stages which used a combination of time, distance and the unknown, in both day and night, in disctances varying from 25 to 1,000 meters to challenge the competitors.

And it’s in that environment where the RAPTAR-S shines. Not only does it incorporate an Infra-red (IR) laser, visible laser, IR flood and laser range finder (LRF) the RAPTAR-S also features an applied ballistics computer created by their partner nVisti Tactical Innovation which specializes in the field of small arms fire control systems with expertise in laser range finders, ballistics, wind measurement and digital imaging. Through nVisti’s partnership with Applied Ballistics and Accuracy 1st, the company has been responsible for the development and integration of the ballistics, firmware and software for the RAPTAR-S weapon-mounted laser range finder.

The solver’s computations achieve nearly the accuracy of a full 6 degree of freedom model using a three degree of freedom (3DOF) modified point mass numerical solver considering all environmental conditions including average cross-wind or a cross-wind profile. It accounts for all major and minor trajectory variables including the use of measured G7 BC’s and even the option to use custom drag curves for over 400 bullets. The output is shown in MILs, MOAs, or even an ACOG BDC reticle. Included within the system is a ballistic calibration feature allows user to ‘train’ the software to match a specific rifle based on observed impacts at long range. Combined with the over 400 custom measured bullet drag curves (available for syncing via Android or PC), shooters have everything the need to make a much more precise trajectory calculation than any other software available.

Included within the RAPTAR-S, the Applied Ballistics solver measures temperature, pressure, humidity, inclination, cant, heading to the target, and GPS coordinates. By using these sensor readings and the custom drag curves, the solver is capable of producing ballistic solutions that are accurate to within 0.1 mils through the subsonic range of the bullet’s flight.

The ballistic data can be exported to most mobile devices or paired with BAE thermal sights as well as the UTC SWIR HWH-SMS camera. In the case of the latter two systems, the RAPTAR-S provides a ballistic solution to the disturbed reticle.

Marine South – Quantico Tactical / Vortex Optics

Monday, April 11th, 2016

Another interesting item I saw in the Quantico Tactical booth was this scope cap insert from Vortex Optics. These Dope Disks were announced awhile ago but I hadn’t seen any in the wild. They are designed to fit into the Vortex Defender Flip Caps which are offered in 44mm, 50mm and 56mm so they will fit a wide variety of optics. The Defender Flip Caps have two stop positions; 45 and 90 degrees. What’s really cool is that the removable Dope Disks can be custom ordered for different ammunition.

This and other weapon accessories are available via Quantico Tactical.
