O P Tactical Offering Twin Needle’s Mini MAP

Wednesday, January 25th, 2017

The TwinNeedle Mini MAP is a modular assault pack that is sized to match the back of most plate carriers perfectly. The large main compartment features a sleeve to secure a 2 litre bladder (3 litre bladders will fit if they are not completely filled) and the external pouch can carry a 24 hour ORP (operational ration pack).

Two columns by three rows of PALS webbing on each side allow the user to fit more pouches to the sides. Three exit ports (one on the top and one on each side) allow the user to place their hydration hose to suit and compression straps allow the load to be cinched down and stop any “pouch bounce”. The webbing tabs on the base that cover the drain holes can be utilized to strap external loads to the bottom.

Dimensions: Main pack 37.5cm tall x 19.5cm wide x 8cm deep. Front pocket 20.5cm tall x 19.5cm wide x 6.5cm deep.

Occupies: 4 columns by 6 rows.

Approximate weight: 430gm (under 1lbs)

Available in Coyote Brown, Multicam, Black and Ranger Green

Made in New Zealand and can be purchased direct or via TwinNeedle’s US distributor O P Tactical.

Arc’teryx LEAF – ‘Less Is Better’ With New Assault Packs

Friday, January 13th, 2017

Arc’teryx LEAF released their Assault Packs as part of the 2017 line.

Essentially, they are updates to the Khard line with minor improvements. These improvements include the name. No one really knew what a “Khard” was when it was first released, but everyone understands what the new naming convention denotes; “Assault Pack” is pretty straight forward.

Like I mentioned, the changes are minor.

The padded shoulder straps and removable waist belt are now common between both the 30 and 45 liter sizes. The suspension is also more PPE friendly.

They’ve also eliminated the zippered pocket inside the pack’s lid due to redundancy, while the zippered pocket on the outside of the lid is no longer as deep, so you won’t lose track of your gear. It also now has a flap. The plus side of this is that it is more water resistant, but I’ve noticed I find myself regularly checking to ensure I’ve zipped it closed, since I can’t just glance at the zipper.

Interestingly, the Khard 60 will remain as-is in both name and configuration, as a specialist item.

The Assault Pack is available in 30 and 45 liter sizes in Crocodile, Wolf Grey, MultiCam and now Black.

ORWM – Mystery Ranch Accessories

Thursday, January 12th, 2017

Here are two new accessories from Mystery Ranch I think SSD readers may be interested in.

First up is the Rain Cover with Hood. It’s pretty straight forward. MR figures that of you want to keep your pack dry, you might want to do the same with your head.

Offered in two sizes, 10 and 30 liters, these Dry Cells feature roll tops and sonic welded seams.

ORWM – Mystery Ranch

Tuesday, January 10th, 2017

This report on new items from Mystery Ranch Outdoor products, coming Fall 17. The military/tactical items will come next week at SHOT Show. Both of these are what I would consider commuter bags.

At 22 liters, the Rip Ruck is made from 420D Cordura in a mountain ruck style.  Look for a separate zippered pocket for a laptop next to the back along with a dual zipper main pocket and two smaller outer pockets which replicate the two-zipper styling.

The Slick is just that.  It’s a 23 liter pack made from ripstop nylon and features a dedicated, zippered, laptop compartment along with a main pocket with a half moon zippered opening.  On either side are slit pockets which will accept a water bottle.
